Keir Starmer became UK's new prime minister on Friday and vowed to rebuild Britain, hours after his Labour Party secured a landslide victory in a general election in which the weary voters inflicted a "sobering verdict" on Rishi Sunak-led Conservatives, who suffered their worst electoral drubbing.
Starmer, 61, assumed charge as the 58th prime minister after his customary audience with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, following Sunak&rsquo;s meeting with the British monarch.
The Labour Party secured 412 seats in the 650-member House of Commons, up 211 from the last election in 2019. Sunak's Conservatives won just 121 seats, down 250 seats from the previous election. While the Labour had a vote share of 33.7% the Conservatives had 23.7%.
&ldquo;Our country has voted decisively for change, for national renewal and a return of politics for public service,&rdquo; said Starmer in his inaugural address from a lectern outside 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British prime minister.

Keir Starmer on Friday officially became Britain&rsquo;s new prime minister after an audience with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, hours after his Labour Party won the general elections.
The 61-year-old Labour leader arrived at the Palace with his wife Victoria Starmer after leading his party to a landslide victory in a landmark UK general election with a gain of over 200 seats, as outgoing leader Rishi Sunak conceded defeat with his Conservative Party suffering its worst election defeat in history.
Earlier, Rishi Sunak, 44, resigned as prime minister after meeting the monarch.
Starmer has promised a phase of &ldquo;national renewal&rdquo; under his premiership.
As Labour crossed the halfway mark of 650 constituencies in the early hours of Friday to clinch the minimum 326 required for a majority in Parliament, Starmer stepped up to make his victory speech in London: "Change begins now. And it feels good, I have to be honest.
&ldquo;A mandate like this comes with a great responsibility. Our task is nothing less than renewing the ideas that hold this country together. National renewal. Whoever you are, wherever you start in life, if you work hard, if you play by the rules, this country should give you a fair chance to get on. It should always respect your contribution and we have to restore that,&rdquo; he said.

Keir Starmer is set to become Britain's next prime minister after his Labour Party hurled towards a landslide majority on Friday in the parliamentary elections and dealt a bruising defeat for incumbent premier Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party.
As Labour crossed the halfway mark of 650 constituencies to clinch the minimum 326 required for a majority in Parliament, Starmer, 61, stepped up to make his victory speech in London just hours away from formally becoming the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
"We did it, you campaigned for it, you fought for it, you voted for it and now it has arrived, change begins now," declared Starmer to a cheering crowd, promising that the work begins right away.
He pledged &ldquo;national renewal&rdquo; following 14 years of Conservative rule.
However, Starmer cautioned that having &ldquo;a mandate like this comes with a great responsibility.&rdquo; Meanwhile, the country&rsquo;s first British Indian prime minister comfortably held on to his own Richmond and Northallerton seat in northern England with 23,059 votes but failed to turn things around for his party at a national level.
A sombre-looking Sunak, 44, was joined by his wife Akshata Murty as his future as a member of Parliament was decided and chose to use his acceptance speech to also admit his party&rsquo;s defeat in winning another term in government.
"The Labour Party has won this general election and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory," said Sunak, acknowledging the &ldquo;sobering verdict&rdquo; handed to his party and taking "responsibility for the loss".
He pledged to &ldquo;continue to serve&rdquo; his constituents for the &ldquo;weeks, months and years ahead&rdquo; and stressed that the transfer of power at Westminster will take place in a &ldquo;peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides&rdquo;.
With some of the most prominent ministers and MPs including Grant Shapps, Penny Mordaunt and Jacob Rees Mogg losing the election, the results are being dubbed a &ldquo;bloodbath&rdquo; for the Conservatives.
Among the new Tory MPs included British Indian candidate Shivani Raja who beat Labour's candidate, former deputy mayor of London Rajesh Agrawal, in the closely watched Leicester East constituency.
Earlier, Keir Starmer won his own seat of Holborn and St. Pancras in London with 18,884 votes and was mobbed by his supporters who could see he was on course to being named Prime Minister.
"The change begins right here. Because this is your democracy, your community and your future. You have voted. It is now time for us to deliver," said Starmer, in his acceptance speech.
While the customary election night exit poll forecast 410 seats for the Opposition party, the outlook as the trends and results tally takes shape is pegging it around 408 seats with the Tories pushed down to around 150.
The Liberal Democrats are also among the big winners of this election, set to bag over 50 members of Parliament. Meanwhile, the Scottish National Party (SNP) which fought on the Independence for Scotland ticket was on course to lose several seats to Labour.
However, a major trend that will dominate the discourse in the coming weeks and months will be Nigel Farage finally being elected as an MP at his eighth attempt and leading his anti-immigration Reform UK to bagging first-time seats in the Commons.
The Reform leader overturned a 25,000 Conservative majority to take Clacton in Essex by more than 8,000 votes, reflective of a wider trend of the party eating into the Tory votes.
Farage, a divisive figure, dubbed his win as the "the first step of something that is going to stun all of you", describing it as the &ldquo;beginning of the end&rdquo; of the Conservative Party.
"There is a massive gap on the centre-right of British politics and my job is to fill it," he declared.

Britain's main opposition Labour party looks set for a landslide election win, exit polls indicated on Thursday, with Keir Starmer replacing Rishi Sunak as prime minister, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.
The survey for UK broadcasters suggested centre-left Labour would win 410 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons, putting it back in power for the first time since 2010, with a 170-seat majority.
Sunak's Tories would only get 131 -- a record low -- with the right-wing vote apparently spliced by Nigel Farage's anti-immigration Reform UK party, which could bag 13 seats.
In another boost for the centrists, the smaller opposition Liberal Democrats would get 61 seats, ousting the Scottish National Party on 10 as the third biggest party.
The projected overall result bucks a rightward trend among Britain's closest Western allies, with the far-right in France eyeing power and Donald Trump looking set for a return in the United States.
British newspapers all focused on Labour's impending return to power for the first time since the days of Gordon Brown in 2010.
"Keir We Go," headlined the Labour-supporting Daily Mirror. "Britain sees red," said The Sun, the influential Rupert Murdoch tabloid which swung behind Labour for the first time since 2005.
Both Starmer and Sunak thanked activists for their work and support during the election campaign but senior Labour figures refrained from any premature celebrations.
<h3>'Brighter future'</h3>
Counting of ballots from some 40,000 polling stations across the country stretches into the night, with official results expected into Friday morning.
The first to declare, just over an hour after polls closed at 2100 GMT, was Houghton and Sunderland South, in northeast England, where Labour's Bridget Phillipson was returned as MP.
Phillipson, certain to become education secretary, said Britons seemed to have chosen a "brighter future".
"After 14 years the British people have voted change... Labour will honour the trust that you have placed in us," she told supporters to applause.
Under Britain's first-past-the-post electoral system, a party needs 326 seats to win an overall majority in parliament.
The leader of the winning party is expected to meet head of state King Charles III on Friday morning, who will ask the leader of the largest party to form a government.
Ministerial appointments will follow soon after an acceptance speech in Downing Street.
The Tories worst previous election result is 156 seats in 1906, and former leader William Hague told Times Radio the projections would be "a catastrophic result in historic terms".
But Tim Bale, politics professor at Queen Mary, University of London, said it was "not as catastrophic as some were predicting" and the Tories would now need to decide how best to fight back.
Farage, aiming to become an MP at the eighth time of asking, has made no secret of his aim to take over the Tories and claimed Reform's results were proof that "the revolt against the establishment is underway".
<h3>To-do list</h3>
Labour's resurgence is a stunning turnaround from five years ago, when hard-left former leader Jeremy Corbyn took the party to its worst defeat since 1935 in an election dominated by Brexit.
Starmer, 61, took over in early 2020, and set about moving the party back to the centre, making it a more electable proposition and purging infighting and anti-Semitism that lost it support.
Opinion polls have put Labour consistently 20 points ahead of the Tories for almost the past two years, giving an air of inevitability about a Labour win -- the first since Tony Blair in 2005.
Starmer -- the working-class son of a toolmaker and a nurse -- has promised "a decade of national renewal" after post-financial crash austerity measures, Brexit upheaval and a cost-of-living crisis.
But his to-do list is daunting, with economic growth anaemic, public services overstretched and underfunded due to nearly a decade-and-a-half of swingeing cuts, and households squeezed financially.
The Labour leader has also promised a return of political integrity, after a chaotic period of five Tory prime ministers, including three in four months, scandal and sleaze.
"I know that the road ahead will not be easy. There are no quick fixes, and hard choices lie ahead," Labour's likely finance minister, Rachel Reeves, said after being re-elected.
"We are under no illusions about the scale of the challenge that we face, or about the severity of the challenges that we will inherit from the Conservatives."
