"To prepare the draft for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and create the law, a 5-member committee under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai has been constituted. The committee will submit its report to the state government in 45 days, based on which the government will take a decision," CM Bhupendra Patel said during a press conference.
Patel emphasized that the Constitution of India is meant to guide citizens in fulfilling their duties.&nbsp;
"Under the leadership of Modi Ji, this year, we are celebrating 75 years of the Constitution. His goal is to implement the Common Civil Code nationwide so that everyone gets equal rights," he added. Referring to key actions like the revocation of Article 370 and the ban on Triple Talaq, Patel pointed out, "Promises made regarding the abrogation of Article 370, One Nation One Election, and Triple Talaq are being fulfilled."&nbsp;
He further stated, "In the same direction, Gujarat is continuously working to fulfill Modi Ji's resolve. The government is working to ensure equal rights and opportunities for all."
Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi elaborated on the committee, stating that it will take all aspects into account when preparing the report.&nbsp;

"Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendrabhai Patel has formed the UCC (Uniform Civil Code) committee. It will be headed by former Supreme Court judge, Justice (retd) Ranjana Desai, retired senior IAS officer CL Meena, Advocate RC Kodekar, former Vice Chancellor Dakshesh Thakar, and social worker Gita Shroff. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken about the Secular Civil Code in his Independence Day speech last year, stating, "There was a long discussion there. After the debate, it was decided that it would be better if the government that gets elected takes a decision on this and implements UCC in the country... The Supreme Court has also said many times that UCC should be brought into the country... Keeping in mind the spirit of the Constitution and the makers of the Constitution, we are working with full force for a Secular Civil Code."

In a landmark decision, Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), effective January 27, 2025. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the move, emphasizing its aim to ensure equality in personal civil matters that have historically been influenced by caste, religion, and gender-based discrimination.
Sharing the development on X, CM Dhami said, &ldquo;The UCC is a significant step toward a harmonious and self-reliant nation, aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s vision of a developed and unified India. All necessary preparations, including approval of the rules and training of officials, have been completed.&rdquo;
The UCC will address personal laws related to marriage, divorce, succession, and inheritance, ensuring equal rights and responsibilities for all citizens. Marriage registration will now be mandatory for all couples within 60 days of solemnization. The Act also provides recognition for marriages solemnized before March 26, 2010, or outside Uttarakhand, with a six-month window for registration.
The UCC excludes Scheduled Tribes and certain protected communities but applies to all other residents of Uttarakhand, including those living outside the state.
CM Dhami highlighted that the implementation fulfills a key promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the 2022 assembly elections. Citing Article 44 of the Indian Constitution, which advocates for a uniform civil code as part of the Directive Principles of State Policy, Dhami said the Act reinforces the vision of creating a just and equitable society.
With this historic step, Uttarakhand has set a precedent for the nation by enacting a long-debated law aimed at promoting uniformity in personal civil matters and upholding constitutional values of equality and justice. &nbsp;

During a meeting of the Uttarakhand Investment and Infrastructure Development Board (UIIDB) in Dehradun, Dhami said that the state government has completed its "homework" and the UCC will be implemented across the state from January 2025.
With this, Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code after independence.
On the last day of campaigning for the 2022 assembly elections, the chief minister had promised the people of Uttarakhand that if the BJP retained power, the UCC would be implemented in the state.
Dhami said that after the formation of the new government in Uttarakhand in March 2022, it was decided in the first meeting of the cabinet to form an expert committee to implement UCC in the state.
He said that a five-member expert committee was formed under the chairmanship of retired judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. On the basis of its report, the Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand, 2024 Bill was passed in the state assembly on February 7, 2024.
Dhami said that the Act was notified on 12 March 2024 after presidential assent.
He said that now the rules of the Uniform Civil Code Act have also been prepared and Uttarakhand is fully prepared to implement the UCC from January.
"The Uniform Civil Code Act of Uttarakhand will give a new direction to the society by following the basic spirit of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas. This law will open new doors of empowerment, especially for women and children of Devbhoomi," Dhami said.
Speaking in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that UCC will be implemented in all BJP-ruled states.
Dhami instructed the officials to provide proper training and facilities to the personnel for the implementation of the provisions of UCC.
The chief minister said that keeping in mind the convenience of the common people, a portal and a mobile app have also been prepared so that facilities including registration and appeal can be made available online.
