Delhi sees highest single-day spike with 4,853 infections

Delhi on Tuesday recorded its highest single-day spike in new&nbsp;Covid-19&nbsp;cases since the coronavirus pandemic hit the national capital. At 4,853 new cases in last 24 hours, Delhi's total tally of Covid-19 positives has reached over 3.64 lakh, authorities said.
 The previous highest single-day spike of 4,473 cases was recorded on September 16.
Along with that, 44 new fatalities pushed the death toll in the national capital to 6,356, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Delhi health department.
The 4,853 fresh cases came out of the 57,210 tests conducted the previous day.
The active cases tally on Tuesday rose to 27,873 from 25,786 the previous day, as per the bulletin.
The bulletin said that the total number of cases has climbed to 3,64,341.

Nevertheless, on withdrawing the advertisement, he termed Tanishq as a "brave" company that considered safety of employees in the face of the controversy.
The 120-billion dollar Tata Group chose to withdraw the 55-second Tanishq advertisement, which shows a Muslim mother-in-law caring for her pregnant Hindu daughter-in-law, in the wake of a furore online and displeasure among certain groups for alleged communal tones.
"People are going out there and telling us that we will not let this film get deleted, they are sharing the film on their own even though it has been removed. Or there is a movement where people are buying Tanishq and showing us the bills," Mr Akali told PTI.
Despite the advertisement being withdrawn, many people came in support of the campaign and made their displeasure against the online trolls known.
"We are at that stage where the majority is speaking up and that is where the love for Tanishq started coming in. I think this is a normal phenomenon in any country," he said, pointing out that this is contrary to the behavioural phenomenon called "spiral of silence".
Spiral of silence refers to a large part of the majority staying silent because this is a way of life for them but there is a vocal minority which keeps speaking, he said.
Making it clear that the intent behind the campaign was just to show cultural realities that gel well with a brand's promise, and not political at all, Mr Akali said the broader "Ekatvam" or unity campaign of Tanishq will continue.
Stating that the society sided with Tanishq because the message resonated with it, he said "more people have seen the message than if it wasn't removed".

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava also asserted that India was a democratic polity based on the rule of law and an independent judiciary.
"We have seen some comments by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on an issue relating to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). India is a democratic polity based on the rule of law and an independent judiciary.
"The framing of laws is obviously a sovereign prerogative. Violations of law, however, cannot be condoned under the pretext of human rights. A more informed view of the matter was expected of a UN body," Srivastava said.
Earlier, Bachelet expressed concern over the restrictions on foreign funding for the NGOs and the arrest of activists in the country.
She appealed to the Indian Government to "safeguard the rights of human rights defenders and NGOs, and their ability to carry out their crucial work" on behalf of the many groups they represent.
"India has long had a strong civil society, which has been at the forefront of groundbreaking human rights advocacy within the country and globally," she said in a statement.
"But I am concerned that vaguely defined laws are increasingly being used to stifle these voices," she said.
Bachelet specifically cited as "worrying" the use of the FCRA, which prohibits the receipt of foreign funds "for any activities prejudicial to the public interest." As per the amended FCRA law, furnishing of Aadhaar numbers by office-bearers of NGOs has become mandatory for registration. The Act also provides for reduction in administrative expenses of any NGO receiving foreign funding, from 50 per cent to 20 per cent of annual funds to ensure spending on their main objectives.

46,790 new cases of Covid-19 and 587 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours as India&rsquo;s infection tally went up to 7,597,063, according to the Union health ministry on Tuesday.
For the fourth day in a row, the active cases dropped below the 800,000 mark, according to the health ministry&rsquo;s Covid-19 dashboard.
The number of recovered stands at 6,733,328 across the country and the recovery rate has gone up to 88.63%.
Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, which have been the most affected by the coronavirus pandemic,&nbsp;have seen a decline&nbsp;in the number of Covid-19 cases since the last one month.

Kerala HC refuses to stay Thiruvananthapuram airport privatisation

PTI,&nbsp;Kochi:&nbsp;The Kerala High Court on Tuesday declined to stay the further proceedings in leasing out Thiruvananthapuram international airport to Adani Enterprises.
Considering an application by the Kerala government seeking the stay, the court adjourned the case for detailed hearing.
Directing the government to produce the documents before September 9, the bench said a detailed hearing in the matter will be held on September 15.
In its application, the state government said unless the stay is granted, it will be put to irreparable injury and hardship.
The state government filed the application in the court, after an all-party-meeting in the state demanded withdrawal of the Union Cabinet's decision last week to lease out the airport to Adani Enterprises.
Last year, the high court had dismissed the petition challenging the decision, terming it as not maintainable under Article 226 of the Constitution.
The state government then filed an appeal before the Supreme Court against the high court order.
The apex court set aside the judgement of the high court and the matter was remanded back to it for a decision on merit.
Referring to the top court directive, the state government said, "all further proceedings in relation to grant of lease with regard to operation, management and development of Thiruvananthapuram international airport to Adani Enterprises Ltd, is to be stayed pending disposal of the aforementioned writ petition."&nbsp;
