Sneha Debnath, a DU student from Tripura, was found dead in Delhi's Yamuna River. Her family had moved to Delhi for better education opportunities.

The parents of Sneha Debanth, whose body was found in Yamuna River in Delhi nearly a week after she went missing, had shifted to the national capital for better higher education for their two daughters.
The 19-year-old, who originally hailed from Sabroom in Tripura, was studying at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College under Delhi University.
She went missing on July 7. Following the intervention of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, a massive search operation was launched and her body was retrieved from the river by Delhi Police and NDRF on Sunday.
The incident has left the parents shattered and speechless.
Pritish Debnath, the deceased's father, was overcome with emotion and could not speak when PTI contacted him.
"I can't say anything now... I am not in a position to talk to anybody about what is going on in my mind," he said.
The former army personnel, who hailed from Bhuratali village in Sabroom subdivision of South Tripura, shifted base to Delhi so that his two daughters &ndash; Bipasa and Sneha &ndash; got the best possible education.
While elder daughter Bipasa is pursuing masters in Mathematics, Sneha was in the second year in the college.
"My uncle, who was living in a flat in Delhi's Saket area, was planning to return to his native place Buratali after the completion of higher studies of his two daughters," Ashim Debnath, a cousin of the deceased told PTI from Sabroom.
"We are devastated, shocked and speechless by the death of Sneha who went to Delhi for a bright career. My uncle, with whom I spoke on Sunday night, was deeply shattered by the tragic death of his younger daughter," he added.
The CM, meanwhile, expressed grief over the death of Debnath, and said that the initial investigation revealed that she died by suicide.
"I express my grief over her death, and my sympathy is with the bereaved family. I ask the authority of Tripura Bhavan, New Delhi to render all possible help to the family," the CM said in a post on X on Sunday.
"Initial investigation reveals that she died by suicide by jumping into the river. A full-fledged probe is underway to know the reason behind the incident," he said.

The body of 19-year-old Sneha Debnath, a Delhi University student missing for six days, was retrieved from the Yamuna River near Geeta Colony flyover on Sunday evening, police said.
Sneha, a resident of Paryavaran Complex in south Delhi, hailed from Tripura. She was reported missing on July 7.
According to police, Sneha had left a handwritten note behind, indicating an intent to jump off the Signature Bridge, built across the Yamuna River. A case in the matter was lodged at the Mehrauli Police Station.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan, in a statement, said, "Investigation was taken up. The cab driver confirmed dropping her at the Signature Bridge. Technical surveillance revealed her last location was at Signature Bridge." Some eyewitnesses said they saw a girl standing on the bridge.
"A joint search with NDRF and local police was immediately conducted from Nigam Bodh Ghat to Noida. Her close friends stated she had been upset for the last few months and had dropped emails and messages that morning. Teams on Sunday evening found the body of a woman and her family members in the river under the Geeta Colony flyover. Her family members identified her," the DCP said.

While a search for Sneha was on, her family and friends expressed concerns about the surveillance infrastructure in the area around the Signature Bridge.
A friend of Sneha claimed that none of the CCTV cameras on the Signature Bridge or in the vicinity were operational at the time she was spotted there.
"Despite the Signature Bridge being a suicide-prone area, there is not a single CCTV camera that works on the bridge or in nearby areas," she alleged.
Sneha was studying BA Mathematics at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College of Delhi University.
"We got to know that she had not withdrawn any money from her account for the last four months. And had left the house without her belongings on July 7 after making a call to her family members," a family friend told PTI.
She said that on July 7, she called her family at 5.56 am and informed them that she would go to Sarai Rohilla Railway Station to meet a friend, Pitunia.
"Later, her phone was not reachable for more than three hours. Her family grew suspicious and called Pitunia, who informed them that she had not met her," she added.
In the hope of leads for her, Sneha's loved ones launched a web dashboard for the people to share information about her.
A post from the dashboard read, "If you have any information about Sneha Debnath's whereabouts or witnessed her on July 7 morning, please contact authorities immediately. Every minute counts in finding her safely." In a statement, her family criticised the authorities for not keeping the CCTVs on the bridge in working condition.
"It is unacceptable that in a high-risk area like Signature Bridge, no CCTV cameras are working. My sister was missing, and we have no leads because the only concrete form of evidence, video footage, is simply not available. This is not just about Sneha; it's about the safety of every student and citizen who visits this area. We demand accountability from the Delhi Police and government, and immediate steps to fix this negligent failure," the statement said.
One of their posts complained about jurisdictional confusion, flagging that the bridge falls under 4-5 different police stations, leading to diluted responsibility and poor coordination.
"Signature Bridge is a known suicide-prone zone that should mandate robust surveillance, yet cameras remain non-operational," their post read.
Sneha's family demanded immediate repair of all CCTV cameras at Signature Bridge, clear jurisdiction assignment for the bridge area, public audit of CCTV infrastructure across Delhi and transparency in investigation progress.
The family, a day earlier, had said, "We are devastated and deeply anguished by the disappearance of our daughter, Sneha Debnath, a 19-year-old student of Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Delhi University." They said she was a bright, ambitious young woman, full of life and dreams.
Sneha was the daughter of Subedar Major (Hon.) Lt Pritish Debnath (retd), who has been battling chronic kidney failure and is currently being treated through dialysis.
Her mother's last contact with her was at 5.56 am.
"When we called again at 8:45 am, her phone was found switched off. We later learned that Pitunia had not met Sneha that morning.
"Upon contacting the cab driver, we were horrified to discover that he had dropped her at Signature Bridge, a known critical spot where not a single CCTV camera is functional, creating a huge blind spot," read the family statement.
"Sneha has not withdrawn any cash for four months and her small remaining balance has remained unchanged," it read.
Earlier, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha directed police to find Sneha in a post on X, noting that the girl hailed from Sabroom in south Tripura.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday congratulated the authorities of Gomati, West Tripura, and South Tripura districts for securing spots in the top 10 of the North Eastern Region (NER) District Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Index 2023&ndash;24.
The second edition of the NER District SDG Index, released by NITI Aayog on Monday, ranked districts based on their performance across key development indicators.
All districts in Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura have achieved the &lsquo;Front Runner&rsquo; status, with none falling into the &lsquo;Aspirant&rsquo; or &lsquo;Achiever&rsquo; categories.
Taking to social media, the CM said, "NER District SDG Index 2023-24: A vital tool for evidence-based planning &amp; monitoring, reflecting PM Narendra Modi Ji's vision. Significant district progress driven by national schemes and aspirational districts programmes has taken place".
"Kudos to Tripura's Gomoti (3rd), West Tripura (5th) and South Tripura (7th) districts in Top 10. Undoubtedly, Tripura with all the districts in the 'Front Runner' category will achieve the SDG by 2030", he wrote on Facebook.
"All districts in Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura have achieved 'Front Runner' status, with no districts falling in the 'Aspirant' or 'Achiever' categories. Mizoram has the highest-scoring district in the entire Northeast region (Hnahthial at 81.43) and Arunachal Pradesh has the lowest-scoring district in the entire region (Longding at 58.71)", the report stated.
It added, "Sikkim has the narrowest range (5.5 points) in terms of the score of the highest and lowest district, showing the most consistent performance across its districts. Tripura has the distinction of having some of the highest-scoring districts with minimum intra-state variation (6.5 points). Mizoram and Nagaland have some of the highest-scoring districts but also exhibit variation (ranges of 13.72 and 15.07, respectively)".
The districts were categorised into four groups &mdash; achiever (scores equal to 100), front-runner (between 65 and 99), performer (between 50 and 65 and aspirant (less than 50).
The NER District SDG Index 2023-24 serves as a critical policy tool for evidence-based planning, resource allocation, and monitoring of development efforts.

Leader of the Opposition in Tripura Assembly, Jitendra Chaudhury, sparked a row by stating that "taller a person, dumber he is", with the ruling BJP demanding his public apology claiming it was a jibe at former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who had courted controversies several times for his remarks during his tenure.
At six feet, Deb is taller than other politicians of the state.
Addressing a party function in South Tripura's Harina on Sunday, Chaudhury, who is also the CPI(M)'s state secretary and politburo member stated, "The more in height a person is, the more of a fool he is." His remark was seen by the BJP as an ostensible jibe at West Tripura MP Deb, who was the chief minister from 2018 to May 2022.
Tripura Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Tuesday demanded a public apology from Chaudhury for allegedly making "objectionable and derogatory" remarks against Deb and other BJP leaders.
Addressing a press conference, Nath said, "The way LoP Jitendra Chaudhury targeted former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb at a party programme in South Tripura on Sunday over his height is unacceptable and objectionable. Not only Deb, Chaudhury also branded the BJP as a 'cheat' (batpar) and said that there is another cheat in Assam, who was once a health minister and is now the chief minister." "There is no doubt that Chaudhury targeted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sarma is one of the best-performing CMs in the country," he said.
It seems Chaudhury is not mentally stable, he remarked, exhorting the CPI(M) leaders to arrange treatment for their leader immediately.
Nath alleged that Chaudhury has failed to deliver as the leader of the House and is trying to mislead the people by raising baseless issues.
"We had a leader of the opposition like Nripen Chakraborty of the CPI(M) who did justice to his chair but Chaudhury has failed to continue that legacy. He failed to raise people's issues in the assembly which caused harm to the common people," he said.
"Therefore, we demand that Chaudhury seek public apology for making objectionable and derogatory remarks against our leaders and the party," he added.
When contacted, Chaudhury on Tuesday downplayed the agriculture minister's demand for a public apology for his alleged objectionable remarks against BJP leaders.
"He (Nath) himself is mental... the minister needs good treatment to get rid of his mental illness. He always speaks about irrelevant and baseless issues. I don't see any logic to pass any comment on the minister's statement," Chaudhury said.

Roy Barman alleged that Vice Chancellor Ganga Prasad Prasain and Registrar Dipak Sharma were indulging in corruption in recruitment for teaching and non-teaching staff at the central varsity.
"They have flooded Tripura University with underqualified and ineligible outsiders, depriving genuine candidates from Tripura. Most shamefully, the vice chancellor has recruited his son as an engineer at the varsity, depriving all the bright locals," he alleged in the letter.
He said the issue was discussed in the assembly, and it was assured that an investigation would be started.
A case of corruption was also lodged with the local police, Roy Barman said.
Urging Pradhan to suspend the vice chancellor, he sought a high-level inquiry committee to probe the alleged irregularities.
"This is the public sentiment of Tripura and it requires immediate intervention of the UGC, Ministry of Education, Governor and Chief Minister of the state," he said.
An official of the varsity rejected the allegations as baseless.
"Some persons with vested interests turned hostile when their unlawful desires were not fulfilled," he said.

The Sepahijala Zoo in Tripura has welcomed three tiger cubs in a cheer for animal lovers.
This is the first time in the history of the state's only zoo, which was set up in 1972, that tiger cubs have been born here, its director Biswajit Das told PTI.
With the birth of the three cubs, the number of big cats in the zoo has grown to five, he said.
"A pair of tigers was brought to the Sepahijala Zoo from West Bengal as part of an animal exchange programme in February last year. On May 11, the tigress gave birth to three cubs," he said.
"The mother and her three cubs are doing well inside the enclosure, while the male tiger has been moved from there as part of precautionary measures," he added.
Eleven CCTV cameras have been installed around the enclosure to monitor the first-time mother and her cubs round the clock, Das said.
Visitors are not being allowed to see the enclosure to ensure that the mother and the cubs don't get disturbed, he said.
"We are giving balanced food to the tigress. Besides supplying fresh meat, we are offering her soup twice or thrice a day so that the cubs get enough milk," he said.
Another tigress had given birth to a stillborn cub in 2014, Das said.
Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma said the birth of these cubs is a positive sign for tiger conservation efforts at the zoo.
"We are making efforts to make Sepahijala Zoo a world-class facility. If the Central Zoo Authority extends a helping hand to train our people and the Centre provides support, we would be able to develop it further," he said.
About 1.70 lakh people visited the Sepahijala Zoo in 2024-25.

Eleven Bangladeshi nationals were arrested from Agartala railway station for entering the country without any valid travel document, police said on Sunday.
Based on specific inputs about some Bangladeshi nationals who had crossed the international border in Tripura's Sepahijala district and would board a train at Agartala railway station, railway police started searching for them on Saturday evening.
"We have detained 11 people - five women and six men - from Agartala railway station and took them to Agartala GRP police station for questioning," Officer in Charge (OC), Tapas Das told PTI.
Das said during questioning the Bangladeshi nationals could not produce any valid travel document to enter Indian territory.
"The 11 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested for illegally entering Indian soil. They will be produced before a court seeking police remand for further interrogation," he said.
Preliminary investigation revealed, that the 11 Bangladeshi nationals were planning to go to Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata for earning livelihood, he said.
"We can't rule out the possibility of human trafficking attempts. We have started an investigation into the case", he said.

When the police arrived, the woman, Suprabha Bal, confessed to the crime. She was seen sitting near her son's body. She has been arrested.
The woman was working as a daily labourer at a construction site. She said her husband was missing and her daughter was married, so she was left to raise her son alone. The woman further told the police that she felt overwhelmed by her son Rajdeep's incessant misbehaviour and that he stole money and neglected his studies.
The woman confessed, "I couldn't go to work or live in peace because of his actions. I killed him and am ready to go to jail for it."
Police recovered rope and a bamboo stick from her home, which were allegedly used to kill the nine-year-old.&nbsp;

The Tripura government is taking various initiative to promote tourism in the state and turning the Ujjayanta Palace into a weekend hub is the first step towards it.

Tripura will soon get a weekend tourism hub at the Ujjayanta Palace. It was recently announced by the Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury that the Chief Minister of the state, Manik Saha will inaugurate the weekend tourism hub on August 6.&nbsp;
According to Chowdhury, this initiative has been taken by the government to promote tourism in the Northeastern state and this is just the beginning. Former BCCI President and cricket stalwart Saurav Ganguly has already been roped in as the brand ambassador for Tripura tourism. The tourism hub will have a light and sound show, boating on a lake and food stalls for tourists.&nbsp;
The palace was named by poet and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, who used to visit it quite frequently to write peacefully and used to praise the palace for its architecture, the tiled floors, the intricately designed doors, and beautifully carved wooden ceilings showcasing the marvelous work of the artisans of those times. &nbsp;

Six people died and 15 others were injured as a Rath caught fire after coming in contact with a high-tension wire in Tripura's Unakoti district on Wednesday, police said.
The incident happened around 4.30 pm in Kumarghat area during the 'Ulta Rath Yatra' festival of Lord Jagannath, they said.
During this festival, the sibling deities -- Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhdara and Lord Jagannath -- return to their abode, a week after Rath Yatra.
Thousands of people were pulling the Rath, made of iron, when it came in contact with a 133 kv overhead cable, police said.
Six people died on the spot and 15 others received burn injuries, Assistant Inspector General (Law &amp; Order) Jyotishman Das Chowdhury told PTI.
The injured were undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital, he said.
Their conditions were stated to be critical, officials said.
Chief Minister Manik Saha condoled the deaths.
"In a tragic accident at Kumarghat, several pilgrims lost their lives and several others were injured due to electrocution while pulling the 'Ulta Rath'. I am deeply saddened by this incident. Deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Also, I wish the injured persons a speedy recovery. The state government stands by them in this difficult time," he said.&nbsp;

Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram have been directed not to register cases against journalists at the "drop of a hat", National Human Rights Commission member Justice M M Kumar said on Wednesday.
The direction was given to chief secretaries and the director generals of police of the three states during their deposition to the Commission at a two-day hearing here which concluded Wednesday.
The NHRC direction was given in connection to a complaint filed by Sanit Debroy of the Assembly of Journalists in Tripura and the Commission has given specific directions to that state's chief secretary and director general of police, Kumar said.
“We have told the states' authorities during the hearing that they need to show patience and to give them (journalists) enough space to express their point of view ... We have also told them them don't register cases at the drop of a hat,” he told PTI.
Debroy had appoached the NHRC with his complaint that since the BJP-IPFT government came to power in the state in 2018 many scribes had been attacked and many newspaper offices had been vandalised.
The other two states, whose representatives were present at the meeting, were also directed to do the same.
“I have told the chief secretaries (of the three states) this (Wednesday) afternoon and they have taken note of the direction,” he said.
The Commission recommended compensation of Rs seven lakh to a minor who was raped by a para-military personnel in Tripura. In another case top government officers of the state were directed to provide proper medical care and treatment to a handicapped person.
Kumar said the Commission has also asked the Mizoram government to pay as compensation Rs seven lakh to the next of kin of a person who died in police custody, while Meghalaya government have been asked to submit proofs of payment of Rs three lakh to the next of kin of a victim who died in a police encounter.
Two cases in connection to the death of labourers in illegal coal mines in Meghalaya were heard and the state government was directed to give Rs five lakh as compensation to the kin of each victim, he said.
In all 19 cases were heard during the two day-public hearing here. Ten of the cases were from Tripura, six from Meghalaya and 3 from Mizoram.
NHRC general secretary Bimbadhar Pradhan said that the Commission is extensively using the NHRC portal for ensuring easy and quick submission of reports and action taken reports from state governments on 22 advisories issued earlier.
