A contractor has been booked for allegedly printing the tricolour upside down on the banners for a Viksit Bharat event in Maharashtra.

An offence has been registered against a contractor for allegedly printing the tricolour upside down on banners that served as a backdrop for an event organised in Maharashtra's Thane district to view Prime Minister Narendra Modi's interaction with beneficiaries of Viksit Bharat Sankalpa Yatra, police said on Monday.
The banners were displayed on the stage during the programme held on the premises of Kalher gram panchayat in Bhiwandi on December 9, an official said.
Based on a complaint lodged by the block development officer of Bhiwandi, an offence under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, has been registered against the contractor, the official from Narpoli police station said.
A probe is underway, and no arrest has been made so far, he said.
The contractor was asked to print banners for the programme organised by the Thane Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti, the official said.
Instead of printing the sample of the background provided by the authorities, he allegedly printed the tricolour upside down, he said.
Union Minister of State Kapil Patil, Thane Guardian Minister Shamburaj Desai and Collector Ashok Shingare, among other dignitaries, were present for the event, it was stated.&nbsp;

The Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi became a dazzling sight as it lit up in saffron, white, and green. The old Parliament building also shone in the national colours. The India Gate in Delhi was seen lit up in preparation for the celebrations today. The bronze National Emblem statue on the roof of the new Parliament Building was also bathed in tricolour.
Odisha's Bhubaneswar went all out, with not just government buildings, but also the streets decked up in saffron, white, and green. The facade of the Calcutta High Court in West Bengal's capital city Kolkata had a similar visage.
The Mubarak Mandi complex in Jammu and the airport in Srinagar, Kashmir were also lit up in colours of India's national flag. The Raj Bhavan and other government buildings in Puducherry were bathed in the tricolour too.

here's a look at the journey of the tricolour with a history of several decades preceding independence. 





The first design of the flag proposed in 1921 consisted of two red, green bands to symbolise the two major communities - Hindus and Muslims, with a white band representing peace and other communities and a spinning wheel symbolising the country&rsquo;s progress. &nbsp;

When we think of the flag of India, the colours saffron, white, green, and blue come to our mind. But did you know, that the first design of the tricolour proposed in 1921 consisted of two red and green bands to symbolise the two major communities of the country - Hindus and Muslims, with a white band representing peace as well as the rest of the communities and a spinning wheel symbolising the country&rsquo;s progress. &nbsp;
The design, largely attributed to freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya, went through several changes and it was in 1931 that the Congress Committee met in Karachi and adopted the tricolour as our national flag. But red was replaced with saffron and the order of the colours was shuffled. &nbsp;
The flag was to be free of religious interpretation. Hence in its present form, the saffron on top symbolises &ldquo;strength and courage&rdquo;, white in the middle represents &ldquo;peace and truth&rdquo; and green at the bottom stands for &ldquo;fertility, growth, and auspiciousness of the land&rdquo;. The Ashok Chakra with 24 spokes replaced the spinning wheel or charkha to symbolise &ldquo;life in movement and death in stagnation&rdquo;.&nbsp;

Finally, it was on July 22, 1947 that the members of the Constituent Assembly of India met in the Constitution Hall in Delhi, and officially adopted the national flag for free India.&nbsp;
It was proposed that &ldquo;the National Flag of India shall be horizontal tricolour of deep saffron (kesari), white and dark green in equal proportion.&rdquo; The white band was to have a wheel in navy blue, which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka.&nbsp;
And the final design of the Indian National Flag was hoisted by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on August 16, 1947, at Red Fort, with a history of several decades preceding independence.&nbsp;

It is not entirely illegal to wear tricolour as part of our attire to celebrate Independence Day. However, it should be donned tastefully, without disrespecting the National Flag.

It is not entirely illegal to wear tricolour as part of our attire to celebrate Independence Day. However, it should be donned tastefully, without disrespecting the National Flag.

Time and again there have been instances where people unintentionally got in trouble for wearing tricolour in the spirit of patriotism.&nbsp;
Back in 2014, Bollywood actor Mallika Sherawat was booked for disrespecting the national flag. She had wrapped a tricolour on her body for a movie poster. In 2017, Priyanka Chopra was also brutally trolled on the Internet when she chose to wear a tricolour scarf to celebrate her love for the nation.&nbsp;
Later, in 2020 after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, people started selling and wearing tricolour masks around Independence Day. This was greatly opposed by the Indian policymakers and such masks were banned across the country.
So, what does the law say about wearing the three colours as a part of the outfit?&nbsp;
In 2005, the Lok Sabha passed a bill that allowed Indian citizens to wear the tricolour as part of their attire, if worn respectably.&nbsp;
As per the law, it is illegal to wear the tricolour anywhere below the waist and it cannot be used in items of daily use such as cushions, handkerchiefs and undergarments. Offence related to disobeying the code could lead to imprisonment of minimum one year.
So, before choosing your Independence Day outfit this year, remember that while it is not entirely illegal to wear the tricolours, it is important to do so with reverence.&nbsp;
You can try out a tricoloured t-shirt, saree, dupatta, or even incorporate it in accessories like a turban, earrings and bangles to showcase your love for the country. You can also wear the tricolour in any form above the waist without the Ashoka Chakra as it will not be considered offensive.&nbsp;

Yati Narsinghanand, a controversial Hindu seer who propagates Hindutva, has come under police scanner after he called upon Hindus to boycott Centre's “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign launched to mark the 75th Independence Day.

Narsinghanand was arrested on January 15 after he called for the genocide of Muslims at a 'Dharam Sansad' or religious conclave at Haridwar.

Yati Narsinghanand, a controversial Hindu seer who propagates Hindutva, has come under police scanner after he called upon Hindus to boycott Centre's &ldquo;Har Ghar Tiranga&rdquo; campaign launched to mark the 75th Independence Day.
In a video that went viral on social media, the hate speech accused is seen claiming that the campaign would end up benefitting a Muslim-owned company in West Bengal.
After the video was circulated widely, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Iraj Raja said they are looking into the matter and would take appropriate legal action accordingly under relevant sections of law.
In the video, Yati is heard saying that to manufacture flags on a mass scale, the government has given contract to a West bengal-based company that is owned by a Muslim named Salauddin, and added that Hindus are the &ldquo;biggest hypocrites in the world.&rdquo; "When these people came in power they awarded government tenders to Muslims. The money which Hindus will pay to buy tricolour would be pocketed by a Muslim and that will be donated to 'Jihadis,'' he said.

The video was released earlier this month but it came to light only on Friday.
In July, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the &ldquo;Har Ghar Tiranga&rdquo; campaign encouraging citizens to display the tricolour at their homes from August 13 to 15.
Narsinghanand was arrested on January 15 after he called for the genocide of Muslims at a 'Dharam Sansad' or religious conclave at Haridwar and got bail in the case on February 7.
However, on April 17, he delivered another inflammatory speech in Himachal Pradesh where he asked Hindus to have more children to make sure India does not become an Islamic country.

The government amended the Flag Code of India, 2002 to allow the national flag to be flown at day and night if it has been hoisted in the open or on the house of a member of the public. 
Earlier, the tricolour is allowed to be flown from sun rise to sun set, irrespective of weather conditions.
The move comes as the government prepares to launch a 'Har Ghar Tiranga' from August 13 to 15 as part of the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav'.
In a letter to secretaries of all central ministries and departments, union home secretary Ajay Bhalla said the display, hoisting and use of the Indian national flag is governed by the Flag Code of India, 2002 and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
The Flag Code of India, 2002 has been further amended through an order on July, 20, 2022 and clause (xi) of paragraph 2.2 of Part-II of the Flag Code of India, 2002 shall now be read as under:- (xi) "where the Flag is displayed in open or displayed on the house of a member of public, it may be flown day and night".
