Toyota Motor announced a global recall of 1.12 million vehicles due to a potential sensor short circuit that might prevent air bags from deploying as intended. The recall spans model years 2020 to 2022, encompassing various Avalon, Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Lexus ES250, ES300H, ES350, RX350, Highlander, and Sienna Hybrid vehicles, affecting the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensors. Particularly, 1 million vehicles in the United States are included in this recall.
The concern revolves around the OCS sensors' functionality, crucial in ensuring appropriate air bag deployment by detecting the presence of small adults or children in the front seat. Toyota dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace these sensors. The automaker plans to commence owner notifications regarding the recall in February.
This action follows a previous recall in July 2022, where Toyota recalled 3,500 RAV4 vehicles in the United States due to potential internal parts interference, leading to inaccurate occupant detection by the OCS sensor.
Frontal air bags have been instrumental in saving over 50,000 lives in the United States over three decades, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The introduction of these new sensors addresses past issues where older air bags deployed uniformly for all occupants, resulting in injuries and, in rare cases, fatalities among children, small adults, and unbelted passengers in close proximity to the air bag during deployment, as highlighted by the agency.

Hybrid Cars Tax:&nbsp;Japanese car maker Toyota Motor has written to the Indian government lobying for tax cuts on Hybrid cars, reported Reuters. The firm has pushed for cut by as much as one-fifth and argue that the hybrid cars are far less polluting than petrol cars but do not get commensurate policy treatment.
<h3>Toyota's Letter</h3>
India taxes EVs at just 5% while the tax on hybrid cars is as high as 43%. This is just 5 percentage points less than the levy on petrol cars which is at 48%. Toyota in its letter has said that this 5-percentage-point differential favouring hybrids over petrol cars is "insufficient", given the reduced emissions and better fuel consumption hybrids offer. It further added that the tax differential should be as much as 11 percentage points for hybrids and 14 points for flex-hybrids.

As per Reuters calculation that would amounts to a tax rate of 37% on hybrids and 34% on flex-hybrids, cuts of as much as 14% and 21%, respectively.&nbsp;
Toyota's India country head, Vikram Gulati in his letter dated Sept 20 wrote, "We would kindly request for a proportionate policy support".&nbsp;
<h3>Electric vs Hybrid Vechicle</h3>
While Toyota is planning to expand its production capacity to meet a surge in Indian demand for hybrids, the government is pushing sales of electric vehicles (EVs), offering companies millions of dollars in incentives to build EVs and batteries.
Investors and climate groups are also crticising Toyota for still supporting Hybrids. However the car maker says that Hybrid cars make better sense for markets where the infrastructure is not ready for EVs.

Gadkari launches Toyota's pilot project on flex fuel-strong hybrid EV. Here's all you need to know

Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday launched Japanese car maker Toyota's first-of-its-kind pilot project on flex fuel-strong hybrid electric vehicle (FFV-SHEV) that can run on 100 per cent ethanol.

A flex-fuel engine offers the owner the flexibility of running the car on petrol, ethanol or a blend of petrol and ethanol.

&nbsp;Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday launched Japanese car maker Toyota's first-of-its-kind pilot project on flex fuel-strong hybrid electric vehicle (FFV-SHEV) that can run on 100 per cent ethanol.
During the launch, the Toyota Corolla Altis FFV-SHEV, which has been imported from Toyota Brazil for the pilot project, was unveiled.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Road Transport minister Nitin Gadkari said pollution is a big concern in India and the transport sector is contributing to pollution.
"Therefore, there is a need to encourage use of electric vehicles and vehicles that run on biofuels like ethanol and methanol," he added.
Besides Gadkari, union ministers Mahendra Nath Pandey, Bhupinder Yadav and senior officials of Toyota Kirloskar Motor were present at the event.
In Brazil, flex fuel-strong hybrid electric vehicle technology has been introduced by Toyota Brazil.
An FFV-SHEV has a flex-fuel engine and an electric powertrain, thus providing dual benefit of higher ethanol use and greater fuel efficiency, as it can run for a significant time period on its EV mode, wherein the engine is shut off.
Flex-fuel compatible cars can run on more than one type of fuel and also a mixture. Typically, a blend of petrol and ethanol or methanol is used.
FFVs provide an opportunity of greater substitution of petrol by ethanol as it is capable of using any of the higher blends of ethanol mix from 20 per cent up to 100 per cent.
Flex-fuel vehicles are available in Brazil, the USA and Canada.
Ethanol is a major alternate fuel used globally and Brazil has the highest average blending of 48 per cent.
Toyota Corolla Altis FFV-SHEV will be able to run on fuel that has ethanol blending between 20 and up to 100 per cent.
The government is working to encourage the use of green and alternative fuels.
Last year, the government issued an advisory to carmakers to introduce flexible-fuel engines in vehicles.
In March this year, Gadkari had launched India's first green hydrogen-based advanced fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), Toyota Mirai, and had said this is the first-of-its-kind project in India that aims to create an ecosystem for such vehicles in the country.
Toyota's Kirloskar's vice chairman Vikram Kirloskar said India has achieved 10 per cent ethanol blending in the shortest time and will achieve 20 per cent by 2025.
Union environment minister Bhupendra Yadav said the next 40 days will be the most difficult time for Delhi because of stubble burnings in neighbouring states. "We can manage 24 lakh tonnes of stubble this year by mechanisation," Yadav added.
Gadkari further said a 6 to 8 per cent increase in agricultural growth rate is necessary for Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
He emphasized on the importance of converting surplus foodgrain and sugar into ethanol for boosting the rural economy.
Encouraging 'Anndatas' to become 'Urjadatas', Gadkari said the success of this pilot project will create an ecosystem of electric vehicles and make New India, a global leader in manufacturing these electric vehicles.
