As Monsoon hits India, the tomato prices in certain retail markets have surged to touch Rs 80 per kg, reported The Economic Times. This due to the heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh that has damaged the road network thus reducing supplies to consumption states.
<h3>Tomato prices skyrocket</h3>
As per The Economic Times that quoted the consumer ministry data, the daily average of the tomato prices touched Rs 55 per kg on July 3 compared to Rs 35 a month ago.
"The supply from Himachal has gone down after heavy rainfall," Manoj Kumar, a vegetable trader at Azadpur Mandi wholesale market told The Economic Times. He further added that prices are expected to rise even higher.
<h3>Monsoon in India</h3>
The Indian Meterological Department has predicted heavy rainfall till July 7 in several tomato growing regions of Himachal Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh is the key supplier of tomato to North India.&nbsp;
"The monsoon trough is north of its normal position at mean sea level and a cyclonic circulation lies over Himachal Pradesh,"IMD said in its weather forecast for the state on Thursday. IMD has also added that this could cause landslides and mudslides, disrupting roadways and traffic.
The Weather office has also warned that heavy rainfall could cause damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation.&nbsp;
Last year too, heavy rainfall and flash floods propelled tomato prices to cross Rs 350 per kg in some retail markets. This even led to the food chain McDonald to temporarily stop using tomatoes in some outlets as there were not enough quantities meeting their quality specifications.
Generally, vegetable prices in India surge during the monsoon season as rainfall affects harvesting including plucking and packaging. Heavy rainfall also leads to more vegetable wastage during transportation impacting prices.
This year, however, severe heatwave also contributed to rise in tomato prices as it affected the horticulture, especially in South India.&nbsp;

India was hit by an intense heatwave. This has impacted the tomato production leading to a surge in prices. As per The Economic Times, in the past 15-20 days, Tomato prices have almost doubled in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala amid intense heat.
<h3>Tomato Price rise</h3>
As per The Economic Times, the average wholesale price of Tomato has reached Rs 40-50 per kg in these states. However, the Northern part of the country hasn't seen surge in prices due to the oversupply of tomatoes which are ripening rapidly due to intense heat conditions.&nbsp;
According to Agmarknet, a government portal on agricultural markets the average wholesale prices in the southern states are ruling in the range of Rs 35/kg to Rs 50/kg, while the highest price levels have even touched Rs 60/kg at some markets in Karnataka. In Bengaluru, tomatoes were selling at ₹80 a kg in retail on Sunday
The data also shows that the prices have nearly doubled during the past two-three weeks as well as from a year earlier.&nbsp;
"This year the temperatures were 42-44 degree Celsius for a prolonged period which damaged flowering and fruiting, resulting in lower production," Sachin Patil, an official from the Pimpalgaon APMC (Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee) in Maharashtra's Nashik district told The Economic Times.
Meanwhile, farmers in Northern India are forced to harvest tomatoes as the intense heat is causing them to ripen fast contributing to supply that helps in keeping the prices in check. The demand for ripened fruit is usually lower in the wholesale market due to their shorter shelf life.
"This year, heat has affected the tomato output. The arrival of the new crop that would be harvested around the Bangalore region would decide the course of tomato prices in the coming days." Tomato trader Ganesh Fulsundar from the Narayangaon tomato market near Pune told The Economic Times.
Normally, the prices of Tomato reach its peak between July and October as tomatoes are grown in very small pockets during the rainy season. Excessively heavy rainfall during monsoon leads to cracking of the fruits, which then cannot be transported over long distances.

The government has announced that tomato prices in retail markets have dropped to the range of Rs 50-70 per kilogram due to the arrival of fresh crops. This comes as a relief after tomato prices had surged to as high as Rs 250 per kg due to unseasonal rains.
Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh stated that the decrease in prices is due to the increased supply of fresh tomatoes, especially from states like Madhya Pradesh. To further stabilize prices, the government plans to continue selling tomatoes at discounted rates until prices return to a more normal level.
Cooperatives NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India) and NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd) have already started selling tomatoes at a reduced rate of Rs 40 per kilogram since August 20. This initiative is part of the government's efforts to mitigate the impact of rising prices on consumers. These cooperatives have been selling tomatoes on behalf of the Consumer Affairs Ministry to address the price surge.
The initial subsidized rate for tomatoes was set at Rs 90 per kilogram but has been progressively lowered to match the declining market prices. Additionally, efforts have been made to boost domestic tomato supply by importing them from Nepal, which has contributed to the stabilization of prices in the market.

Tomato prices continue to skyrocket and now it is expected to reach Rs 300 per KG very soon, said wholesale traders. The prices have been going up for the past one month due to supply disruptions and now people are moving to alternatives like tomato puree and ketchup.
As per Consumer Affairs Ministry's data the price reached Rs 203 per KG on Wednesday. However, Mother Diary has started selling tomatoes at a whopping Rs 259 per KG on Wednesday through its Safal retail stores.
Kaushik, a member of the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee has told PTI that that vegetable wholesalers are facing losses as the sale of tomatoes, capsicum, and other seasonal vegetables has fallen drastically. He also mentioned that the tomato prices have gone up to Rs 220 per KG from Rs 160 per KG in the wholesale market.&nbsp;

Azadpur Mandi Wholesaler Sanjai Bhagat has said that the prices may hit Rs 300 per Kg soon as the transportation of tomatoes is hit by landslides and rainfall. He also mentioned that the quality of tomato that is exported from Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra have come down.
"There is a lot of difficulty in transportation of vegetables due to landslides and heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh. It takes 6 to 8 hours more than usual in exportation of vegetables from the producers due to which the price of tomato might reach nearly Rs 300 per kilogram," Azadpur Mandi wholesaler Sanjai Bhagat told PTI
"Tomato supply has been affected across the country for the last two months owing to weather abnormalities. In the last two days, arrivals in Azadpur, which is the main feeder for Delhi, has also dropped drastically. Due to short supply, prices have sharply shot up in wholesale, resulting in impact at retail prices too," a Mother Dairy spokesperson said.
The supply of tomatoes have also reduced as heavy rainfall in the Himachal region have damaged the crops. As both supply and demand are low, vendors are facing loss.
"Vendors are facing difficulties like late exportation of vegetables, deterioration of quality. Moreover, customers have been refusing to buy vegetables like tomatoes, capsicum, cauliflower and cabbage", said Anil Malhotra member of the Azadpur Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee.

In less than a month a farmer from Maharashtra's Pune became a millionaire and earned Rs 3 crore from his tomato produce.&nbsp;

Even as the soaring prices of tomatoes are burning a hole in the common man's pocket, a farmer from Pune in Maharashtra has become a millionaire by selling his bountiful yield of the key kitchen staple for Rs three crore in just over a month while overcoming various challenges.
Farmer Ishwar Gaykar (36), from Pachghar village in Junnar tehsil of Pune district, had faced a difficult decision of dumping a large quantity of harvested tomatoes in May this year due to low prices.
Undeterred by the setback, he continued to exhibit unwavering determination and work tirelessly on his 12-acre farm to cultivate tomatoes.
Now, amid the skyrocketing prices of tomatoes, Gaykar's hard work has paid off handsomely, transforming him into a millionaire as he claimed to have earned Rs three crore through the sale of his crop yield between June 11 and July 18.
Talking to PTI, Gaykar said during the period, he sold 18,000 crates of tomatoes (each crate comprising 20 kg of tomatoes) at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Narayangaon in Junnar tehsil for Rs three crore.
He aims to earn another Rs 50 lakh by selling the remainder of the produce, which is roughly 4,000 crates.
The total input cost of cultivation, including transportation, was Rs 40 lakh, he said.
"I have an 18-acre farm where I cultivate tomatoes on 12 acres. I have sold 18,000 crates since June 11 and have so far earned Rs 3 crore," said Gaykar.
On June 11, he fetched a price of Rs 770 per crate (Rs 37 to Rs 38 per kg), and on July 18, he sold tomatoes at Rs 2,200 per crate (Rs 110 per kg ).
Gaykar, who is now happy to earn handsome dividends on the produce, recalled how he had to dump a large quantity of harvested tomatoes just two months back due to low prices.
"This is the best of times for the tomato growers, but we have witnessed worst times also. In the month of May, I grew tomatoes on one-acre land but had to throw away large quantities of the produce as the prices were very low. I had thrown the produce away as the per crate rate was just Rs 50, which means Rs 2.50 per kg," he said.
Gaykar also said that in 2021, he incurred losses worth Rs 15 lakh to Rs 16 lakh and last year also he just earned a narrow profit margin.
"When I was throwing the tomatoes in May this year, this yield on the 12-acre land was under cultivation. Undeterred by the setback, I kept up my resilience and commitment towards farming and continued spending on the cultivation of tomatoes," he said.

"I took good care of the produce even in the scorching May heat. Due to the high temperatures, tomato cultivation in other parts took a beating, but farmers like me benefitted as we continued to work hard," he said.
Another farmer Raju Mahale, who earned more than Rs 20 lakh by selling 2,500 crates in the current season, said he was also jittery about tomato cultivation after May as the per acre input cost was around Rs 3.5 lakh. But, he went ahead with the cultivation, receiving good dividends now.
Narayangaon agriculture market trader Akshay Solat, who purchased Gaykar's produce, said as there was a boom in the market again, he purchased tomatoes at Rs 2,400 per crate.
"I have been in this trading business for the last 15 years, but I have never seen such a boom in the tomato market. Once there was a rate of Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,600 per crate, but such price-wise consistency in the tomato market was never witnessed," he said.
He, however, said only a handful of farmers have earned handsomely this season, including farmers from Pachghar, Otur, Ambegavhan, and Rokdi.
Narayangaon APMC chief Sanjay Kale said generally in this season, their market receives 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh crates of tomatoes per day, but in the current season, it has dropped to 30,000 to 35,000 crates per day.
"In the last two years, farmers incurred huge losses and could not recover their production costs, which resulted in a drop in production. During the summers, the tomato crop suffered from diseases, forcing the farmers to abandon their tomato farms," he said.
"I generally get tomatoes from across the state, but because of the aforementioned reasons, the market committee is receiving the produce from Junnar and Ambegaon tehsils. These are the reasons why tomato prices have skyrocketed and demand has soared," he said.
Kale said since the production of tomatoes has taken a beating in north India, traders from other states come to the market in Narayangaon to purchase the key kitchen staple.
The National Cooperative Consumers' Federation (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) last week started selling tomatoes at a discounted rate of Rs 90 per kg in Delhi-NCR and Patna in a bid to provide relief to consumers amid the high prices.
The Centre had directed the two cooperatives to procure tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra for distribution in major consumption centres, where retail prices have recorded a maximum increase in the last month.
"Though the NCCF and NAFED started selling tomatoes at the discounted rate, the government is buying the produce at Rs 110 or Rs 120 per kg, so farmers will continue to get what they are getting now," Kale said.&nbsp;
