In what was being called the first semifinal before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the concept of a united Opposition taking on the Bharatiya Janata Party was put to the test.
In Tripura, longtime rivals Congress and the Left Front buried their differences to form an alliance for the Assembly elections.
However, the tie-up failed to dent the BJP, as the ruling party and its ally IPFT managed to hold on to power, albeit with lesser seats.
The performance of Congress and Left - the two parties which dominated Tripura politics for decades - was actually comparable to the fledgling party TIPRA Motha in these polls.
It remains to be seen whether the experience of Tripura would motivate Opposition parties to strategise better for a united fight in 2024 or dissuade them from forming an official alliance.

Ruling BJP-IPFT combine returns to power in Tripura

The BJP-IPFT alliance returns to power in Tripura winning 33 seats in the 60-member assembly on Thursday, as the Election Commission declared the results of all the constituencies.
The Tipra Motha, formed by former scion of the state&rsquo;s princely family Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, bagged 13 seats, while the Left-Congress alliance secured 14, with Debbarma&rsquo;s party eating into the Left&rsquo;s tribal votes.
The Trinamool Congress performed poorly winning none of the 28 seats it contested. Its vote share (0.88 per cent) came to less than that of those who stamped None-Of-The-Above (NOTA).
Though the coalition of the BJP and the Indigenous People&rsquo;s Front of Tripura (IPFT) returned to power for a second time, both parties secured fewer seats when compared to their performance in 2018, mainly as Tipra Motha did well in the tribal hinterland.
The saffron party contested in 55 seats and won 32, three less than what it bagged in 2018. The party also secured 38.97 per cent of the votes polled. The IPFT, which was affected by a factional fight, managed to emerge victorious in only one seat, while it had got eight seats five years back. Its vote share this time was a meagre 1.26 per cent.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) lost power in 2018 after ruling the northeastern state for 25 years by winning only 16 seats last time around. This time they contested in 47 seats and won 11, with a vote share of 24.62 per cent. Other Left parties &ndash; Forward Bloc, CPI and RSP - failed to open their account.
Fielding candidates in 13 constituencies, the Congress won three, bagging a vote share of 8.56 per cent.
&ldquo;The BJP&rsquo;s victory was expected&hellip; We were eagerly waiting for it. Our responsibility has been increased with the decisive mandate,&rdquo; said outgoing Chief Minister Manik Saha who came to the state&rsquo;s top post in May last year replacing Biplab Kumar Deb.&nbsp;

It's the first electoral battle of 2023, with one year to go for the Lok Sabha elections. And even though established forces like BJP, Congress, and the Left Front are facing-off in the Tripura elections, a lot of attention is also directed towards a newcomer.
The Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance, or TIPRA Motha, was founded in 2021 by a member of the erstwhile royal family and former Congress leader, Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma. The same year, the outfit won the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, defeating the BJP and the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT).
In the Assembly elections, the TIPRA Motha is contesting on 42 of the 60 seats, with tribal communities as its main constituency, and a promise of pushing for creation of a separate state of Greater Tipraland for indigenous groups. But the party is mainly expected to perform well on 20 tribal-dominated seats.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has claimed that the TIPRA Motha has a secret understanding with the Congress-Left alliance to bring back Communist rule in the state. Meanwhile, there is also speculation that the party may end up hurting chances of the Opposition alliance because it is contesting on even non-tribal-dominated seats.
Even though the TIPRA Motha has said that it will only ally with a party if it supports the Greater Tipraland promise, many believe that the best-case scenario for the outfit is its emergence as a kingmaker in the Assembly elections.

This could be attributed to a variety of factors, like its performance in tribal council polls, or its main poll plank of creating a separate state.
Here is what the party, led by erstwhile royal Pradyot Debbarma, is promising to electors.
The foremost promise is to make a concerted push for the creation of the state of Greater Tipraland for indigenous tribes. Secondly, TIPRA Motha says it would create a police force under the command of the existing Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), and would recruit around 6,000 youth for it.
The party says it will not force non-tribals to be relocated from TTAADC areas. It's promising a stipend of ₹25,000 per month to 'samajpatis' of indigenous tribes.
The party would create 20,000 new jobs, and also grant land rights to those denied so far. It has promised a one-time package for surrendered militants, and also a welfare board for the Manipuri community.

However, less than a year before the next Assembly elections, the BJP changed the state Chief Minister, with Biplab Deb resigning and making way for Manik Saha. The change was seen by many as an admission of anti-incumbency.
Now the party is facing an alliance of the Congress and Left, a relatively new party - TIPRA Motha - hoping to capture tribal votes, and a foray into the state by West Bengal's ruling party Trinamool Congress. The BJP's manifesto has attempted to address the challenges posed by the varied Opposition.
Here are some highlights.
The biggest focus in BJP's vision document is the tribal community, with the party promising more legislative, executive, and financial powers to the autonomous tribal council if it wins. The BJP also said it would place IGP-level officers in tribal council areas for the effective maintenance of law and order. Also, tribal courts would be set up in TTAADC areas to preserve customary laws and traditions.
On the financial front, the party promised population-wise fund allocation and their timely transfer to the tribal council. A new Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Tribal University and the addition of the tribal language of Kokborok to CBSE and ICSE curricula are also part of the promises.

Among the larger promises, the BJP said that it would implement a ₹5 meal-for-all scheme, named after Anukul Chandra. Every girl child would get a ₹50,000 Balika Samriddhi bond. If BJP is re-elected, its government would add ₹2,000 to the ₹6,000 given to farmers under the PM-KISAN scheme by the Central government.
Also, a new Regional Institute of Medical Sciences would be set up in Agartala. On the economic front, industry-specific manufacturing zones would be set up for rubber, agar, and bamboo.
BJP's critics have accused the ruling party of being silent on the creation of jobs, as well as pension and Dearness Allowance (DA) hikes for more than 1.8 lakh government employees.

28.13 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in 60 constituencies where a total of 259 candidates are contesting.

Results of the elections will be declared on 2 March.

Days ahead of voting in Tripura for the Assembly elections, Chief Minister Manik Saha rejected the demand for a separate Greater Tipraland demand being raised by the TIPRA Motha political outfit.
CM Saha on 4 February 2023 said that the TIPRA Motha was trying to create divisions between people, and disturbing the good relations between tribal and non-tribal communities in the state.
Saha, a BJP leader, claimed that he had heard that the boundaries of the proposed Greater Tipraland pass through Assam, Mizoram, and Bangladesh, and none of them would accept the demand.
Saha claimed that the Centre is focusing on the development of all the Northeastern states. In a veiled attack on the CPI(M), the CM said, "What the BJP-IPFT government has done in five years, the others could not achieve in 35 years." Saha said the CPI(M) and the Congress have forged an alliance because of the vibrant democracy prevailing in the state.
"It is very strange that Congress leaders are coming out of CPI(M) offices and Communist workers are visiting Congress offices. How has the Congress joined hands with the CPI(M) which had killed 69 Congress leaders and workers," he asked. The chief minister, who addressed two more rallies, urged Congress leaders and workers to join the BJP.
Elections to the 60-member Assembly will be held on 16 February, and votes will be counted on 2 March.
