Tihar warders, assistant superintendents, matrons among 50 terminated for biometric mismatch

All these employees were on probation period for two years, the official said, adding that they have to respond within one month on the notice.

The Tihar Jail administration has served termination notice to its 50 employees after a verification drive found a mismatch in their biometric identification records, officials said on Saturday.
According to the Tihar Jail administration, among these 50 terminated employees, 39 are warders, 9 are assistant superintendent and 2 are matron.
The notice was served as per the direction of the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSB), which conducted the exams and recruited about 450 applicants to these three posts, officials said.
Of these 450 employees, the biometric identification did not match for 50 of them, due to which the notice of termination has been served to them, they added.
"It is suspected that somebody else had taken their exams," an official said.&nbsp;
&nbsp;All these employees were on probation period for two years, the official said, adding that they have to respond within one month on the notice.

A day after former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain collapsed in a Tihar jail bathroom, he was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court.
The top court on May 26, 2023 granted bail to Jain till July 11 on medical grounds. The Aam Aadmi Party leader was warned against influencing witnesses, tampering evidence, or leaving Delhi.
The next court hearing will take place on July 10, with Jain's latest medical reports.
He has been behind bars since May 2022 in an alleged money laundering case.

Tajpuriya was killed on May 2 allegedly by four members of the rival Gogi gang &mdash; Deepak alias Titar, Yogesh alias Tunda, Rajesh, and Riyaz Khan &mdash; who stabbed him &ldquo;92 times&rdquo;. The four attackers, lodged on the first floor of the prison, cut an iron grille and used bed sheets to climb down, police had said.
Tajpuriya was lodged in Tihar jail since 2016. He was an accused in the 2021 Rohini court shootout, in which gangster Jitender Gogi was killed, and was facing a threat to his life following the shootout.

Top officials of Tihar Jail have accused minister Satyendar Jain of threatening and intimidating them and complained against him to the Director-General (Prisons), sources said on Thursday.
Sources said the Additional Inspector General - Prisons (Tihar Jail), Superintendent of Jail No. 07 (SCJ-7), Deputy Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent and the Law Officer complained to the Director-General (Prisons) that Jain had been "abusing them and threatening them with dire consequences once he gets out of the prison".

"Jain has been blatantly intimidating these officers and others for their acts trying to prevent him from availing facilities of massage, lavish food and other VIP treatments that came to the fore recently," a source said.
Jain has been in jail since he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last year in connection with a money laundering case. Purported videos of him getting massages and meeting visitors inside the jail had created a furore with the opposition demanding his removal from Cabinet.

Aaftab Poonawala, who is in judicial custody for allegedly killing his live-in partner, has asked Tihar jail authorities to give him novels and books, officials said on Saturday.

Poonawala allegedly strangled his live-in partner Walkar and cut her body into 35 pieces which he kept in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks at his residence in South Delhi's Mehrauli before dumping them across the city.
Poonawaala is lodged in central jail number four and is under strict vigil as there is a threat to his life, officials said.
"We are taking care of the inmate as per protocols. He has now asked for English novels and other books. He said he wants to read more and indulge in literary activities.
"For now, we have provided him the book 'The Great Railway Bazaar' by Paul Theroux. It is from our library. He will be provided more books later," said the jail official. &nbsp;Poonawaala had undergone polygraph test and narco analysis test recently at the forensic science lab and Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital. &nbsp;Poonawala was arrested on November 12 and sent to five-day police custody, which was further extended by five days on November 17.
The court on November 26 sent him to judicial custody for 13 days. Now, video of Satyendar Jain meeting a Tihar jail superintendent surfaces

The purported video of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader meeting the jail superintendent was shared on social media by some BJP leaders.

A fresh video showing Delhi minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Satyendar Jain meeting a superintendent of the Tihar jail inside his prison cell emerged on Saturday.
Jain, who is in the eye of a political storm over leaked videos purportedly showing him getting massages and other special facilities in the jail, has urged a court here to put a stop on CCTV camera footage of his cell being "leaked" to the media.
The purported video of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader meeting the jail superintendent was shared on social media by some BJP leaders.
"Have this new video of honest minister Jain. Jail superintendent's attendance in the court of jail minister at 8 pm," Delhi BJP media cell head Harish Khurana tweeted and shared the CCTV camera footage.
Earlier this month, a Tihar jail superintendent was suspended for alleged involvement in providing "special treatment" to Jain, who is in prison since May 31 in a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Sources had said that the suspended officer, Ajit Kumar, was the superintendent of jail number 7 in the prison complex and was from the DANICS cadre.
Jain could be seen in earlier purported videos getting back and foot massages in his cell, reading some documents and talking to visitors while lying on a bed. Mineral water bottles and a remote are also seen. In one video, he was seen getting a head massage while sitting on a chair.

BJP leaders had alleged that he was getting massages from a rape accused. It was also alleged by them that Jain was getting facilities inside the jail against rules.
The AAP had earlier said the BJP is trying to malign the image of Delhi Chief Minister and its national convener Arvind Kejriwal ahead of the December 4 Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls as it has no real issues to talk about.
On the massage videos, the Kejriwal-led party has said Jain was receiving physiotherapy in the jail.
The ED probing the money laundering charges against Jain had claimed in a court that he was getting "special treatment" inside the Tihar jail. It had also presented CCTV footage to substantiate the claim.
The agency on Tuesday told a Delhi court that it had no role in the alleged leakage of CCTV footage of Jain reportedly getting special treatment inside the prison cell. The jailed AAP minister had filed a plea seeking contempt proceedings against the agency for allegedly leaking the videos to the media.&nbsp;

This after fresh videos of the jailed minister emerged on Wednesday in which he is seen eating uncooked vegetables and fruits in his cell.
Hours after the video was leaked, the BJP targeted the AAP leader once again. In a press conference Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi alleged that he is enjoying facilities akin to a holiday resort.
The court will hear Jain&rsquo;s plea on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the minister's counsel Senior Advocate Rahul Mehra had alleged that the Enforcement Directorate was leaking sensitive information to the media despite the order of the Court and undertaking given in this court.
Rahul Mehra also denied ED allegations of getting privileged treatment in Tihar Jail.

There was no reaction from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Tihar administration on the matter.
The Delhi Prisons department comes under the AAP-led city government. &nbsp;Earlier this week, a Tihar jail superintendent was suspended for alleged involvement in providing special treatment to Jain in the prison.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had claimed in a court here that Jain was getting special treatment inside the Tihar Jail.
The federal probe agency had made the submission before Special Judge Vikas Dhull while concluding its arguments opposing Jain&rsquo;s plea in the money laundering case.

"Unidentified people were giving foot massages to Jain even beyond curfew hours. He was also given special food,&rdquo; Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the ED, had said.
He had also shared CCTV footage with the court and alleged that most of the time Jain was either in hospital or in jail enjoying various facilities. Earlier this month, Director General (Prisons) Sandeep Goel was transferred from the Tihar Jail, days after incarcerated conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar alleged extortion of Rs 10 crore for protection in prison by Goel and Jain.
The AAP had dismissed the allegations as "absurd and baseless".
The ED had arrested Jain and two others on May 30 in the money laundering case based on a CBI FIR in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The AAP minister has been accused of having laundered money through four companies allegedly linked to him. &nbsp;

Director General (Prisons) Sandeep Goel has been transferred from the Tihar Jail here, days after jailed conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar alleged extortion of Rs 10 crore for protection in prison.
According to an official order issued on Friday, the 1989 batch AGMUT cadre officer has been transferred from Tihar Jail and asked to report to PHQ for further orders.
"Sanjay Beniwal, the 1989 batch IPS officer, is the new DG (Prisons)," it stated.
Chandrashekhar had written to Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena alleging that AAP leader Satyendar Jain "extorted" Rs 10 crore from him in 2019 to ensure his safety in prison.
Chandrashekhar, who is lodged in Mandoli jail here in connection with a Rs 200 crore money laundering case, submitted the letter to the L-G on October 8 through his advocate Ashok K Singh, making the startling allegations against the AAP leader.
The letter said more than Rs 50 crore was given to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on a promise of giving Chandrashekhar an important post in the party in South Zone, and also help him in getting nominated to the Rajya Sabha.
Chandrashekhar also alleged that he was visited by Jain in Tihar jail, where he was lodged after his arrest in 2017 in the 'two leaf symbol corruption case'.
Jain, who held the portfolio of the jail ministry, asked him if he had disclosed anything to the probe agency related to his contribution to the AAP, he alleged.
Tihar Jail is run by the Department of Delhi Prisons under the Government of Delhi.
"Thereafter in 2019 again I was visited by Satyendar Jain and his secretary and his close friend Sushil in jail, asking me to pay Rs 2 crore every month to him as protection money to live safely in jail, and to get even basic facilities," he alleged.
"Jain asked me to pay Rs 1.50 crore to DG prison Sandeep Goel, who, he said, was a loyal associate of his. He forced me to pay and an amount of Rs 10 crore was extorted from me through constant pressure in a matter of two-three months,&rdquo; he alleged in the letter.
He also alleged that the amounts were collected in Kolkata through Jain's associates.
"Hence a total amount of Rs 10 crore was paid to Satyendar Jain, and Rs 12.50 crore to DG prison Sandeep Goel," Chandrashekhar alleged and added that he has already given this information to the Enforcement Directorate.

To avoid detection, criminals keep changing their method of communication, like using voice and video call features of social media platforms, to sending voice recordings.
But how do jail inmates get access to phones? The mobile devices can be handed to inmates by acquaintances during jail meetings or court hearings. In some cases at Tihar, mobile phones were wrapped in cloth or socks and thrown over the boundary wall of the jail. The other way is to either bribe or coerce jail staff.
The hiding places are quite unique, and disturbing. In August 2019, a Tihar prisoner swallowed 4 mobile phones. Doctors made him vomit three out, but the fourth was had to be surgically removed from his rectum.
In August 2021, an NIA team probing the case of a bomb scare outside Mukesh Ambani's house seized two phones at Tihar from the alleged chief of Indian Mujahideen. In January 2022, an inmate swallowed a phone to hide it, and doctors had to fish it out using a snare.
With such instances occurring at regular intervals, most recently in the Moose Wala and Lawrence Bishnoi case, questions have been raised about the situation at high-security prisons like Tihar.
In April 2022, Delhi government reportedly told Supreme Court that mobile signal jammers and X-ray scanners were being installed at Tihar. Earlier, in November 2021, Tihar authorities had said that 3 mobile signal jammers had been installed at the premises.
It remains to be seen how effective such steps are.
