New Delhi, PTI: The government on Thursday decided to restore with immediate effect all existing visas, except electronic, tourist and medical categories. The visas were suspended almost eight months ago following the coronavirus outbreak and subsequent imposition of a nationwide lockdown.
The Ministry of Home Affairs also announced giving permission to all Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card holders and all other foreign nationals to visit India for any purpose, except on a tourist visa.
The ministry said in a statement that in view of the situation arising out of the Covid-19 pandemic, the government had taken a series of steps to curtail the inward and outward movement of international passengers since February, 2020.
The government has now decided to make a graded relaxation in visa and travel restrictions for more categories of foreign nationals and Indian nationals who wish to enter or leave India.
Under this graded relaxation, the government has decided to restore with immediate effect all existing visas, except electronic visa, tourist visa and medical visa, the statement said.
If the validity of such visas has expired, fresh visas of appropriate categories can be obtained from Indian mission or post concerned.
Foreign nationals intending to visit India for medical treatment can apply afresh for a medical visa, including for their medical attendants.
Therefore, this decision will enable foreign nationals to come to India for various purposes such as business, conferences, employment, studies, research, medical purposes etc.
The government has also decided to permit all OCI and PIO card holders and all other foreign nationals intending to visit India for any purpose, except on a tourist visa, to enter by air or water routes through authorised airports and seaport immigration check posts.

The attack was carried out on Thursday on the state-run Oil &amp; Gas Development Company Ltd (OGDCL) workers in Ormara town in Gwadar district.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan Army, confirmed that the militants had also sustained heavy losses in the exchange of fire and seven Frontier Corps (FC) soldiers and seven private security guards were killed in the attack.
"The terrorists attacked the convoy from the mountains near Ormara on the Balochistan-Hub-Karachi coastal highway and heavy exchange of fire took place. The convoy was returning to Karachi from Gwadar,&rdquo; a top police official in Gwadar said.
He said it was a planned attack and the militants had prior information about the convoy going to Karachi.
"They were waiting for the convoy. Despite the FC and security guards losing their lives, the other FC personnel managed to safely get the convoy away from the spot near Oramara,&rdquo; the official said.
Gwadar port is the focal point of the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) development projects and a number of officials of the state-owned institutions and foreigners work at the port city under heavy security cover.
The ISPR, without giving the exact numbers, said a &ldquo;large&rdquo; number of terrorists had attacked the convoy.
"Security forces responded effectively, ensured security of the OGDCL persons and managed their safe exit from the area," it said in a statement, adding that "substantial losses were also incurred to the terrorists" during the exchange of fire.
According to the ISPR, the security forces have cordoned off the entire area and a search was underway for the militants involved in the attack.
No banned separatist or terrorist outfit or group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

New Delhi, PTI: Former Flight Lieutenant Gunjan Saxena Thursday told the Delhi High Court that she has not faced any discrimination on the basis of her gender in the Indian Air Force. She maintained that Air Force gave her an opportunity to serve the nation, including in the Kargil War and she will forever remain grateful for the opportunities given to her by the force.
Saxena made the submissions in her affidavit, in a suit filed by the Centre, seeking a decree of permanent injunction against the Netflix, Dharma Productions and others from broadcasting or releasing in theatres or any other digital platform the film ''Gunjan Saxena - The Kargil Girl'', without grant of no-objection certificate (NOC) from it.
According to the Centre, the film which was streaming on Netflix, depicts the IAF in poor light and dents its image as it shows that the force is gender biased, which is not correct.
Saxena, in her affidavit filed before Justice Rajiv Shakdher, clarified that the movie is not a documentary but is only inspired by her life and it is clear from the two disclaimers placed at the beginning of the film which gives a message to motivate young women to join IAF.
"The Deponent (Saxena) does not claim that everything that is shown in the movie has happened with her in her real life. However, the deponent believes that the message sought to be conveyed through the movie is to motivate young women to join the Indian Air Force and, on a broader canvas, the aim is to inspire young women to pursue their dreams, not to doubt themselves and to work hard towards their goals," she said in the affidavit filed through advocate Aditya Dewan.

Chandigarh, PTI: The ruling BJP on Thursday named party leader and Olympic medallist Yogeshwar Dutt as its candidate for the bypoll to the Baroda assembly constituency.
According to a party statement, the wrestler-turned-politician will contest the November 3 bypoll from Baroda seat in Sonipat.
The last date to file nomination for the bypoll is Friday.
The bye-election was necessitated due to the demise of Congress MLA Shri Krishan Hooda in April. In the 2019 assembly polls, Dutt had lost to Hooda from the seat.
Till about midnight, the Congress was yet to announce its candidate for the seat.
Earlier in the morning, some sports personalities including BJP leader Babita Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Geeta Phogat and&nbsp;Dutt had met Chief Minister M L Khattar in Delhi.
The sportspersons batted for&nbsp;Dutt's candidature for the Baroda seat, which the saffron party has never won.
Khattar earlier said that the party''s state unit had discussed 25 names, but shortlisted four and sent it to the party high command.
The party on Thursday evening announced&nbsp;Dutt's name for the seat.
The wrestler-turned-politician, who hails from Bhainswal Kalan village in Sonipat district, had joined the BJP in 2019 ahead of the state assembly polls.

Paswan said his party had fought the Lok Sabha polls last year in alliance with the JD(U) because of the "compulsions" brought on by the return to the NDA of Kumar, whose party he accused of working against LJP candidates in the general elections in violation of the coalition dharma.
The 37-year-old, who recently lost his father Ram Vilas Paswan, the charismatic LJP founder, also alleged that Kumar had behaved "haughtily" when the late Union minister had called on him last year with the request to accompany him for filing nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha.
