From the encampment near the town of Samrong, a 45-year-old mother of four, Tep Savouen, said it all started about 8 a.m.
&ldquo;Suddenly I heard a loud noise," she told the AP. "My son told me it might be thunder and I thought 'Is it thunder or is it loud, more like a gun?' Thailand also sealed all land border crossings while urging its citizens to leave Cambodia. Officials said all seven Thai airlines expressed willingness to help bring back any Thai nationals seeking to return home from Cambodia.
A long-standing border problem The two Southeast Asian neighbors have long had border disputes, which periodically flare along their 800-kilometer (500-mile) frontier and usually result in brief confrontations, only rarely involving the use of weapons. The last major combat over the issue was in 2011, leaving 20 dead.
However, relations sharply deteriorated since a May confrontation killed a Cambodian soldier. Thursday's clashes were unusually big in intensity.
The first clash on Thursday morning happened near the Ta Muen Thom temple along the border of Thailand's Surin province and Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey, prompting villagers to scurry to shelter in concrete bunkers.
The Thai army and Cambodia's Defense Ministry each said the other side deployed drones before advancing on the other's positions and opening fire. Commenting on the long-term working relationships between India and Thailand, as well as with the other member countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), industry observers said Indian technologists, given the large number of engineers available in the country, could play a pivotal role in mega technology-driven programmes.

"I was happy with the preparations in Bengaluru," said Chettri.
"We trained for more than 40 days. The training ground and all the facilities were excellent. As far as the squad is concerned, we have a good mixture of young and senior players.
"Unfortunately, we had to let go of forwards like Karishma (Shirvoikar), Sandhiya (Ranganathan) and Renu due to injuries. But that's part and parcel of football. And as compared to the Pink Ladies Cup squad (in February), we have more experienced players with us now." The Indian coach tried various combinations during the two preparatory friendlies against Uzbekistan, rotating as many as eight players for the second game and handing out a total of five debuts.
"We had a clear plan for those two friendlies. We were trying to find the right combination for the qualifiers because we have to play almost four games in 13 days. Rotating players and giving them proper recovery time is important.
"We created many more chances in the second game as compared to the first, but the conversion was the problem, and that's what we'll work on in the coming days," said Chettri.
To adjust to the more humid weather of Chiang Mai, the Blue Tigresses will arrive in the city a week before the first match against Mongolia. They will also have a five-day gap before taking on Timor Leste in the second game.
"I'm pleased with the federation for sending us early to Thailand. There is ample time for acclimatisation and recovery.
In Bengaluru, the weather has been very pleasant. But Chiang Mai is quite hot and humid at this time of the year. So, this week will help us a lot in our preparation," Chettri added.

The previous two matches, however, were both won by India in 2019.

Chhetri, who scored the first two goals in the Asian Cup victory, reminisced about the performance that ended India's 55-year wait for a win at the continental showpiece.
"That was a long time back. What I remember of the game was that the team was outstanding in that game. That's also a marker for us to know that on a good day, if we work hard, that's what we can achieve," said Chhetri in a press release issued by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
"That game was special because a lot of young people did really well. So, we are taking a lot of positivity and inspiration from the game.
"At that time, Thailand were probably better than us on paper by a mile. We were underdogs in that game, and to win the game the way we did &mdash; it wasn't just four goals but the way we held ourselves and dominated the game &mdash; was really fantastic." The Indian team will need the 40-year-old talismanic striker's goal-scoring prowess and his inspirational leadership to notch a hat-trick of wins against the Thais.
A win on Wednesday at the Thammasat Stadium will also a big confidence booster before the crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifying round match against Hong Kong on June 10 in Kowloon.
While India are currently placed 127th in the FIFA Rankings, Thailand are 99th. The Thais has risen 14 places since Japanese coach Masatada Ishii took charge in December 2023 and led them to the round of 16 of the Asian Cup a month later.
Though they failed to make it to third round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, 2024 was a fairly successful year for Thailand. They won the King's Cup and finished runners-up in the ASEAN Championship.

Contrarily, earlier this week, Thailand's Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Russ Jalichandra, claimed that no serious resettlement offers had been made. He suggested that any third country truly interested in taking the men should have negotiated with China for approval.
The State Department criticized Thailand's decision as a breach of its commitment to the United Nations Convention Against Torture, stressing that offers of asylum do not require China's consent.
"The responsibility to protect individuals at risk of persecution or torture from being returned to their persecutors is non-negotiable," asserted the State Department. They also mentioned involvement from "a number of allies and partners" in the resettlement efforts but did not divulge additional details.
Russ indicated that Thailand's decision to return the Uyghurs to China might have been driven by concerns over potential retaliation from China if they were granted asylum elsewhere.
"The repercussions for Thailand if they sent the Uyghurs to a third country would have been substantial," he stated. "It was not a realistic option." U.S. officials and human rights groups report that China has detained over a million people, predominantly Uyghurs and other Muslim ethnic minorities, in camps designed for forced assimilation and indoctrination in Xinjiang.

The marriage equality bill, which grants full legal, financial and medical rights for marriage partners of any gender, sailed through the House of Representatives right before the previous parliamentary session concluded in April.
