US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that a deal with China "is done" after two days of talks in London, marking a turnaround in the trade war between the two major economies.
"Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi (Jinping) and me,&rdquo; Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social.
His post came after the negotiating teams from both sides concluded two-day talks in London, where they agreed to resolve their trade disputes.
&ldquo;Full magnets, and any necessary rare earths, will be supplied, up front, by China. Likewise, we will provide to China what was agreed to, including Chinese students using our colleges and universities (which has always been good with me!)&rdquo; Trump said.
&ldquo;We are getting a total of 55 per cent tariffs, China is getting 10 per cent. Relationships are excellent! Thank you for your attention to this matter,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;President Xi and I are going to work closely together to open up China to American Trade. This would be a great WIN for both countries!!!," he said.
The London talks focussed on both sides reaching a deal on China resuming supplies of rare earth metals, the key elements needed to manufacture mobile phones, semiconductors and missiles, besides automobile production. &nbsp; Following the talks, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the deal between the two countries should result in restrictions on rare earth minerals and magnets being resolved.
While China blocked rare earth exports, the US restricted Beijing&rsquo;s access to US goods such as semiconductors and other related technologies linked to artificial intelligence (AI).
"We have reached a framework to implement the Geneva consensus," Lutnick told the media, according to a BBC report.
"Once the presidents approve it, we will then seek to implement it," he said.
Rare earths are a group of metals consisting of 17 elements. Though present in several counties, their extraction is costly and messy, causing massive amounts of pollution.
According to the International Energy Agency, China accounts for 61 per cent of global mined rare earth production but controls 92 per cent of the global output.
Ahead of talks with the US, China last Saturday approved a certain number of export license applications for rare earth-related metals.
The approval was granted considering rising global demand for medium and heavy rare earth elements driven by industries such as robotics and new energy vehicles, a spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce said in Beijing.
China&rsquo;s recent restrictions on the exports of key metals caused widespread disruption in the manufacturing of automobiles and semiconductor chips in a host of countries, including India.
While China is negotiating with the US and the EU, Beijing reportedly has not yet responded to India&rsquo;s request to resume exports of the key rare-earth elements. &nbsp; &nbsp; The shortages were so acute that Japan&rsquo;s Suzuki stopped production of its Swift model, according to reports from Tokyo.
Trump&rsquo;s latest posts followed a phone call between Xi and him last week leading to the talks between the two countries in London.
The two negotiating teams finished their latest round of talks by announcing they had agreed in principle to a framework that each side would bring home for review by their respective leaders as the world&rsquo;s two biggest economies attempt to get their trade-war ceasefire deal signed in Geneva last month back on track.
Beijing also took exception to US threats to revoke visas of thousands of Chinese students studying in the American Universities.
An official statement released by Xinhua in Beijing on Wednesday said both China and the US &ldquo;made new progress in addressing each other&rsquo;s economic and trade concerns&rdquo; during the &ldquo;candid and in-depth&rdquo; dialogue.
Vice-Premier He Lifeng, who led the Chinese delegation, said that &ldquo;China does not want a trade war, but it is not afraid of one&rdquo;, according to the statement.
&ldquo;The two sides should resolve economic and trade differences through equal dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation. China is sincere in economic and trade consultations, but it also has its principles,&rdquo; He was quoted as saying.
Lutnick, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer led the US side in what was described as &ldquo;the first meeting of the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism&rdquo;.
Both the US and China agreed to temporarily lower tit-for-tat tariffs after talks in Geneva last month.
The truce is due to last 90 days to provide time for the top two economies to reach a broader substantive agreement to end their tariff war.
Trump imposed 145 per cent of tariffs against the Chinese exports of about USD 439.9 billion and China retaliated with 125 per cent on American exports of about USD 143 billion. &nbsp; However, the Geneva truce was disrupted after the US took exception to China not lifting the restrictions on the exports of rare earth metals.
Under the Geneva agreement, the US lowered tariffs imposed on goods from China from 145 per cent to 30 per cent while China dropped its retaliatory tariffs from 125 per cent to 10 per cent.
Analysts said China wouldn&rsquo;t have agreed to lift restrictions on rare earths unless it received other meaningful concessions.
&ldquo;Trump said China would supply magnets and rare earths but gave no clear explanation of what the US is offering in return, except for student visas,&rdquo; Su Yue, principal China economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit, told Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post.
&ldquo;But China wouldn&rsquo;t have agreed unless it received other meaningful concessions. Trump seems to be framing the deal as a win for the US, but that could actually signal that China walked away with more,&rdquo; he added.

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Wednesday said that the chance of revival of an armed conflict between Pakistan and India is remote but warned of a befitting response in case of any such development.
Dar's comment came while responding to a question during his press conference giving details of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's recent visit to Turkiye, Iran, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan and to thank the respective leadership for support during conflict with India.
When asked about a possible new round of fighting, Dar said that he could not predict the future but the chances of any such possibility are slim.
&ldquo;The ceasefire is holding and all steps regarding the withdrawal of troops have been implemented by the two sides in letter and spirit. So there is no chance (of new war) in my opinion,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;However, we will give a befitting reply if India resorts to armed conflict.&rdquo; He said Pakistan was ready for dialogue with India, but not desperate for it, adding that Pakistan seeks a composite dialogue that includes terrorism as well as other issues, including Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).
He also claimed the IWT cannot be suspended.
The minister reiterated the offer for a neutral probe into the Pahalgam incident, which led to the recent escalation between Pakistan and India.
Dar, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, claimed while Pakistan's kinetic action has been appreciated, its diplomatic efforts have also earned international recognition.
The minister also appreciated the role played by the US, UK, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Iran and other countries during the conflict and bringing peace.
Dar announced that Prime Minister Sharif was set to visit Saudi Arabia during the next 24 hours to thank its leadership for its positive role during hostilities with India.
Speaking about Sharif's recent four-nation tour, Dar said the Prime Minister undertook a visit to Turkiye, Iran, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan to express Pakistan's gratitude for the solidarity expressed by these countries during the conflict with India.
He also praised the diplomatic outreach led by former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, which, he said, &ldquo;has garnered international acclaim for its clarity.&rdquo;

New Delhi and Islamabad reached an understanding Saturday to halt military actions with immediate effect after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.
Villagers living close to the Line of Control who were forced to flee due to heavy shelling by the Pakistani military started returning home on Monday.
They started their journey back to their villages after bomb disposal squads cleared the residential areas of any leftover or unexploded shells, officials said.
"We are happy that a ceasefire has been reached between the two countries. We are also hopeful that Pakistan will not resort to such activities again," said Arshad Ahmad, a resident of the Kamalkote area in Uri.
Uri MLA Sajjad Shafi has asked the residents of villages along the frontline to remain vigilant and not touch anything suspicious.
"They should immediately report any suspicious objects to the authorities for proper disposal," he said.
Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday asked the residents of border villages not to rush back as residential areas were yet to be sanitised and cleared of any unexplored shells.
In Punjab, markets teemed with people in the border areas on Monday, even though schools in some districts remained shut.
Schools in Ferozepur, Fazilka, Pathankot, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Gurdaspur districts, that lie on the border with Pakistan, remained shut on Monday. In Pathankot and Gurdaspur, colleges and universities also remained closed.
Punjab shares a 553-km frontier with Pakistan.
"India has taught a lesson to Pakistan and it has been successful in sending a strong message to the neighbouring nation. And now Pakistan, which is a rogue nation, will not dare to cast an evil eye on our country," a grocery shop owner in Pathankot said.
Pakistan especially targeted Pathankot with multiple drone attacks, but they were thwarted by the Indian security forces.
In Ferozepur, villagers who had moved to safer places were returning to their villages.
Daler Singh, a native of Jallo Ke village near the border, said that most residents of nearby areas had left hearth and home. "Now, most of them have returned but they remain cautious. Overall, life is normal and we are going back to our fields," he said.
A Ferozepur native said, "The situation is normal now. We hope the ceasefire holds and peace prevails." In Rajasthan, a complete blackout was observed in the border districts Sunday night.
There were reports that some red lights, suspected to be of drones, were spotted in the sky in Barmer.
The district administration sent out an alert on X, "Incoming drone activity spotted. Please stay inside your houses and observe blackout: DM Barmer." It, however, said no drone was shot down.
By Monday morning, an apparent sense of normalcy became palpable in the border districts with people gathering at tea stalls and shops and bantering.
Jalam Singh, a Jaisalmer local, said, "Things appear to be back to normal now. Last night was peaceful." Jammu and Kashmir, the worst hit border, was peaceful last night with no hostilities between the Indian and Pakistani militaries.
"The night remained largely peaceful across Jammu and Kashmir and other areas along the international border," the Indian Army said in a brief statement Monday morning.
"No incidents have been reported, marking the first calm night in recent days," it said.

Sources from the news agency ANI disclosed that the Indian Air Force engaged the S-400 missile systems to neutralize 'moving targets' that were headed towards Indian jurisdiction. These targets were effectively eliminated, ensuring no damage to Indian cities.
In a calculated countermeasure, India employed HARPY drones to disable Pakistan's air defense infrastructure. This deployment comes amidst reports of Pakistani forces allegedly targeting military installations across 15 northern and western Indian cities, spanning areas such as Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Gujarat.
Government officials have stated that the missile attacks were part of a broader Pakistani effort to strike at Indian military capabilities. However, Indian defenses thwarted these attempts, subsequently disabling Pakistani air defense systems in retaliation.

The Indian airspace will not be available for the aircraft registered in Pakistan as well as for planes operated, owned, or leased by Pakistan airlines and operators. Also, the ban will be applicable for the military aircraft of Pakistan, a senior government official said.
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Wednesday evening in this regard, and it will be applicable till May 23.
According to the official, the ban will come into force from 12 am on Thursday.
Generally, NOTAM is a notice having essential information for people involved in flight operations.
The latest move, part of various measures taken by the government against Pakistan in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, comes a week after Pakistan closed its airspace for Indian carriers.
There are no direct flights between India and Pakistan.
Pakistan airlines use the Indian airspace for their flights to Singapore, Malaysia, and other East Asian countries.
A senior air traffic controller (ATC) said there are not many Pakistan airline flights that use the Indian airspace.
On April 23, a day after the Pahalgam attack, India announced a raft of punitive measures against Pakistan, including suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, shutting down of the only operational land border crossing at Attari, and downgrading of diplomatic ties in view of cross-border links to the massacre.
In response, Pakistan shut its airspace to Indian airliners and suspended all trade with India, including through third countries. Pakistan rejected India's suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and said any move to stop the flow of water will be seen as an "act of war".
