The Rajasthan police Sunday arrested a priest for allegedly not allowing a newlywed Dalit couple to offer prayers at a temple in Jalore, officials said.
A video of the incident on Saturday also went viral purportedly showing priest Vela Bharti stopping the couple at the gate of the temple at Neelkanth village under Ahore subdivision of the district.
The video also captures the ensuing argument between them.
The aggrieved family members then approached the police and field a case against the priest under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. "We have registered a case under SC/ST Act against the priest and arrested him," Jalore Superintendent of Police Harsh Vardhan Agarwalla said on Sunday.
According to the complaint, Kuka Ram's baraat had reached Neelkanth village on Saturday and the couple wanted offer a coconut at the temple after their wedding. "When we reached there, the priest stopped us at the gate and asked us to offer the coconut outside. He asked us not to enter the temple as we are from the Dalit community," according to a complaint filed by Tara Ram, the bride's cousin.
It said some villagers also joined the argument and supported the priest, saying it was the decision of the village and there was no point in arguing with the priest.
"We pleaded with the priest a lot but he was adamant. After that, we filed a complaint against the priest with the police," Tara Ram said.

The Bihar government has began the process to make deities owners of the temple land instead of priests, Law Minister Pramod Kumar said on Friday.
The Law Department will soon issue a circular, removing the names of priests from the revenue records to protect the properties from unauthorised claims, Kumar told PTI on the decision that is likely to have widespread socio-political ramifications in the state.
"A priest cannot be treated as landowner ('bhuswami'), and the revenue records will now have the name of the deities of the shrines," Kumar said.
It would help in dealing with largescale irregularities in temple land as priests have been buying and selling those as owners, he said.
"The Bihar government will simply implement the Supreme Court judgment passed on September 6, 2021. The SC bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and AS Bopanna had ruled that 'there is no mandate under the law' that the name of pujari or manager is required to be mentioned in the revenue records since the deity as the juristic person is the owner of the land," the minister said.
The bench had also cited the Ram Janmabhoomi case verdict to support its view that the deity presiding over a temple is a juristic person and can hold property in their name, he said.
"In the ownership column, the name of the deity is required to be mentioned. The occupation of the land is also by the deity, which is carried out by the servant or the managers, on behalf of the deity," he said.
Kumar said that he is visiting all divisional headquarters of the state regarding the matter and asking officers concerned to start the process at the earliest.
"All district revenue officers have been asked to identify the land sold by priests or heads of mutts in their areas. All such registration of properties will be cancelled, and the Bihar Religious Trust Board will take possession of those land," he said.
Recently, the Bihar Religious Trust Board stayed the sale of land belonging to 299 temples in Bhagalpur division because of procedural discrepancies, he said.
The Board is also scrutinising revenue records of 5,533 acres of land belonging to different temples and mutts in the Darbhanga division, he said.

Rajasthan&nbsp;police on Friday arrested the main accused,&nbsp;Kailash&nbsp;Meena&nbsp;for allegedly burning a 50-year-old Temple priest alive over a land dispute. The incident took place in the&nbsp;Sapotra area in Karauli&nbsp;district of&nbsp;Rajasthan&nbsp;on Thursday. The priest who had suffered 50 percent burn injuries was rushed to Jaipur's&nbsp;SMS&nbsp;hospital where he died on Thursday night.
According to SP Karauli&nbsp;Mridul&nbsp;Kachawa,&nbsp;the priest in his statement named influential people including Kailash&nbsp;Meena&nbsp;and his sons. The priest also said six people poured petrol on his bales of&nbsp;bajra&nbsp;(millet) which were lying at the disputed site.
Rajasthan&nbsp;CM&nbsp;Ashok&nbsp;Gehlot, who is currently facing opposition&rsquo;s ire over&nbsp;the killing of the priest, took to twitter to condemn the incident and assured that the accused shall not be spared.&nbsp;
