Amid demands by the Opposition for a discussion in Parliament on the Sino-India border issue, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday cited past instances when the UPA government had denied deliberations in the House on such matters and said it is not good to rake up sensitive issues politically.
Responding to questions on the issue by reporters in Parliament complex, Rijiju said the border issue is very sensitive and there is a convention in Parliament of not discussing such matters in the House.
"You would recall that in 2005 when I was in the Opposition I had raised the issue of the China border. Then, late Pranab Mukherjee was the Leader of the House and then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called me and said China border issue is very sensitive, therefore, it should not be discussed in Parliament and should be dealt with internally. We did not press," he said.

In 2008, when the Chinese President visited India, BJP had once again demanded a discussion and gave a notice in Lok Sabha, he recalled.
"Then Mukherjee once again said the issue should not be raised in Parliament and the government would internally look into the issues (relating to China) and the solutions would be conveyed personally and not through Parliament," the Lok Sabha member from Arunachal Pradesh said.
Then Leader of the Opposition L K Advani had agreed not to press for a discussion as the matter was sensitive, he said.
"Today, the same Congress party is repeatedly demanding a discussion. One should think about what is important in national interest. It is not good to rake up a sensitive issue politically and mislead (people)," the Union minister said.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday strongly objected to the use of the term "pitai" (beating) by former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi while referring to the India-China clash in Tawang, and asserted that our soldiers have stood their ground in Yangtse in Arunachal Pradesh and should be "appreciated and honoured".
There is no problem with political criticism of the government's actions, Jaishankar said, but objected to "direct or indirect" criticism of the soldiers guarding the country's frontiers.
His remarks during the debate on the Anti Maritime Piracy Bill in the Lok Sabha were in response to Gandhi&rsquo;s allegations in Jaipur last week that China had taken away 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory, killed 20 Indian soldiers, and was "beating our jawans in Arunachal Pradesh".
"The word 'pitai' (beating) should not be used for our jawans. Our jawans are standing their ground. They should be respected, they should be honoured, and they should be appreciated. This is not something that is appropriate," he said.
There is no problem with political differences or criticism of the government's action,"but, I think we should not directly or indirectly criticise our jawans. When our jawans are standing in Yangtse at 13,000 feet, defending our borders, they do not deserve the word 'pitai'," he said.

The BJP launched a fierce attack on Rahul Gandhi on Saturday for his remark that Chinese soldiers are beating up Indian Army personnel in Arunachal Pradesh and said the Congress should immediately expel him from the party.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said if Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is not "remote-controlled" and if the opposition party stands with the country, then Gandhi should be expelled for his comments, which "belittle" India and break the morale of its armed forces.
At a press conference in Jaipur on Friday during his "Bharat Jodo Yatra", Gandhi claimed that China is preparing for a war and accused the government of trying to "ignore" the threat, saying it is "asleep" and not ready to accept the situation.

"Local commanders were able to resolve the issue by carrying out negotiations resorting to existing protocols," the Eastern Army Commander said.

Asserting that the Indian Armed forces are firmly in control, Eastern Army commander Lt General RP Kalita Friday said that border areas along the northern frontier are stable.
Stating that there are different perceptions of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) by the Indian Army and China's PLA at several points, he said that in one of these areas in the Tawang sector, the PLA transgressed, which was very firmly contested by Indian forces on ground.
"It led to some amount of physical violence, but it was contained at local level resorting to existing bilateral mechanisms and protocols," Kalita said.
He said that there were some minor injuries to soldiers on both sides.
"Local commanders were able to resolve the issue by carrying out negotiations resorting to existing protocols," the Eastern Army Commander said.
He said that this was followed by flag meeting at the delegation level at Bumla, wherein the issue was resolved further.&nbsp;

Report: Indian Army finds bags with belongings of Chinese troops from clash site | Tawang clash

Citing sources, the report said, the sleeping bags could help them stay survive in open areas in extreme cold temperatures.&nbsp;

The Indian forces have recovered stuff left behind by the Chinese troops &nbsp;in the Yangste area near Tawang sector where the clash between Indian and Chinese troops took place recently.&nbsp;
As per an India Today report, the stuff recovered include sleeping bags and equipment which was apparently left behind when the Chinese troops were disengaging from the area and withdrawing to the other side of the Line of Actual Control for safety.
Citing sources, the report said, the sleeping bags could help them stay survive in open areas in extreme cold temperatures.&nbsp;
Amid the long-standing deadlock at the LAC, the Chinese troops clashed with the Indian soldiers in Yangste area near Tawang sector on December 9, 2022. Reportedly, over 300 Chinese soldiers had attempted to get access to the top of a 17,000-ft peak and uproot an Indian post but their attempts were successfully thwarted by forces on the Indian side.&nbsp;
