In a first for India&rsquo;s mining sector, Tata Steel has deployed an all-women shift at its Noamundi Iron Mine in Jharkhand. The groundbreaking initiative challenges traditional norms in a male-dominated industry, placing women at the forefront of operations such as operating heavy machinery and supervising shifts.
A Milestone for Gender Inclusion
This historic move comes years after the Mines Act of 1952 was amended in 2019 to permit women to work in mines across all shifts. Tata Steel, a frontrunner in embracing diversity, became the first company in India to implement this change, steadily increasing women&rsquo;s participation in mining through its Women@Mines initiative.
The Noamundi mine&rsquo;s all-women shift represents the culmination of this effort, with women now handling critical operations like operating shovels, dozers, loaders, drills, and more.

Women from local communities were trained in operating heavy earth-moving machinery (HEMM), learning technical skills, safety protocols, and physical fitness. The program&rsquo;s success has enabled dozens of women to take on roles that were once exclusively male.
Tata Steel&rsquo;s inclusion strategy hasn&rsquo;t stopped at gender diversity. Earlier this year, the Noamundi mine inducted nine transgender individuals as HEMM operators, underscoring its broader commitment to workplace equity.

While the all-women shift marks a significant milestone, experts say systemic challenges persist in India&rsquo;s mining industry, which continues to see low female participation. Tata Steel aims to achieve a workforce consisting of at least 25% diverse groups, including gender minorities, marginalized communities, persons with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ individuals within the next few years, according to a company official.
<h3>LGBTQIA+ recruitment</h3>
The company has pioneered a special recruitment drive for transgender talent, having hired over 100 members from the community for various roles across different locations. This initiative positions Tata Steel as one of the first companies in India to actively recruit transgender individuals.
"Continuing this drive, we aim to have 25% of our workforce from diverse groups in the next couple of years," the official stated.
Currently, 113 transgender individuals have been onboarded and assigned to various roles in manufacturing, operations and maintenance, mining, and services. These employees are stationed in locations including Noamundi, West Bokaro, Kolkata, Kharagpur, Kalinganagar, and Jamshedpur.
Some of these employees work in all three shifts and operate Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) at the Noamundi iron ore mine in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum and West Bokaro coal mine in Ramgarh district.
"Tata Steel appreciates the potential of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&amp;I) and has a tremendous organizational focus on it," the official said. "In line with this, we renewed our commitment and refocused our approach to DE&amp;I in 2015 by setting up MOSAIC - a platform for pioneering initiatives, diversity targets, and employee-friendly policies conceptualized and executed from the apex level."
The official acknowledged initial challenges due to inadequate knowledge about the transgender community but emphasized that the detailed plan was implemented smoothly. Since the first batch of transgender individuals was inducted in 2019 following proper training, no complaints have been received from any employees.
Jaya Singh Panda, Chief Diversity Officer at Tata Steel, emphasized the importance of nurturing a workplace where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Panda highlighted that diversity is a key strength for long-term success and innovation.
Transgender employees have expressed satisfaction with their roles at Tata Steel. A transgender employee at the Jamshedpur plant noted feeling safe and supported by coworkers. The company has also developed inclusive infrastructure, including separate toilets.
A trans-female employee from Noamundi shared how her father's perception changed after seeing her employed at Tata Steel. Another trans-male employee in Jamshedpur expressed gratitude for being able to support his family and contribute to his sister&rsquo;s marriage. Overall, these employees appreciate the acceptance and opportunities provided by Tata Steel.

TATA Steel Layoffs 2024: Tata Steel is to cut about 3,000 jobs at a plant in Wales, as the industry struggles to finance greener production of the metal.
The company will on Friday confirm the closure of two blast furnaces at the Port Talbot steelworks, resulting in the loss of over one-third of staff, the source with knowledge of the plan told AFP.
It follows talks Thursday with unions, who described the development as "a crushing blow".
Tata in a statement said it had "been engaging regularly and constructively with... trades union colleagues and their advisors for some time about the best way forward to create a sustainable green steel future for Tata Steel in the UK.
"When we have any formal announcement to make about our proposals for the future, we will always share these with our employees first," it added.
<h3>TATA Steel Layoffs</h3>
Towards the end of last year, the UK government provided &pound;500 million ($634 million) to fund the production of "greener" steel at the country's biggest steelworks, while saying that 3,000 jobs were still at risk.
The money for an electric furnace safeguarded 5,000 of the more than 8,000 jobs.
"Large-scale job losses would be a crushing blow to Port Talbot and UK manufacturing in general," Charlotte Brumpton-Childs, a senior official at the GMB union, said Thursday.
"It doesn't have to be this way. Unions provided a realistic, costed alternative that would rule out all compulsory redundancies.
"This plan appears to have fallen on deaf ears and now steelworkers and their families will suffer," she added in a statement.
Separate sources told AFP on Thursday that the Italian government had launched the process of placing the struggling former Ilva steelworks under state supervision in a bid to secure thousands of jobs.
A letter to this effect was sent Wednesday to the CEO of the site's operator Acciaierie d'Italia, which is majority-owned by ArcelorMittal, the world's second largest steelmaker, said the source close to the matter.
<h3>Green Steel</h3>
In Wales, Port Talbot steelworks is the UK's single biggest carbon emitter, and the government has been looking to help Tata Steel and British Steel, run by Chinese group Jingye, to replace dirty blast furnaces.
The Mumbai-based conglomerate had threatened to shut the plant unless it received state aid to help decarbonise production and cut emissions.
The government said replacing the coal-powered blast furnaces at the Port Talbot site would reduce the UK's carbon emissions by about 1.5 percent.
Experts have said green hydrogen could help the massively polluting steel industry, but producing the clean energy in large enough quantities requires significant investment.

The IJmuiden facility, situated approximately 30 kilometers west of Amsterdam, presently employs roughly 9,200 workers. The impending restructuring primarily targets managerial and support roles. It's a strategic move deemed imperative for maintaining competitiveness, especially as the Dutch steel plant charts a course toward more sustainable production methods.
"Despite all efforts by Tata Steel to improve its market standing and reduce costs, more needs to be done," the company asserted in a recent statement. "Also in light of the transition to a cleaner company, in which significant investments are and will be made."
One pressing issue facing Tata Steel is its significant contribution to the Netherlands' CO2 emissions, accounting for approximately 7% of the country's total output. Collaborative efforts with the Dutch government to implement environmentally friendly steel production strategies have yet to yield a concrete agreement. Tata Steel has proposed a shift from coal and iron ore-based production to utilizing ovens powered by metal scrap and hydrogen by 2030, though detailed financial plans remain undisclosed.
The company's financial report for the quarter ending September 30, 2023, revealed a substantial consolidated loss of ₹6,511 crore. Factors contributing to this included restructuring costs in the UK operations and reduced sales and price realizations. Tata Steel recorded a consolidated net profit of ₹1,297 crore during the same period last year.

TATA Steel Job Cuts: Tata Steel Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, T.V. Narendran, in an interview with Moneycontrol, has said that the company will start consultation with UK Unions regarding the restructuring moves at its Port Talbot site.

The restructuring comes as the Port Talbot site is shifting to electric-arc furnace production. In the interview, he further denied media reports that claimed the company had delayed the announcement of job cuts. The media reports came after the company cancelled a scheduled press conference on Wednesday evening soon after it put out a grim quarterly result.&nbsp;
"There is some confusion on the delay &nbsp;because yesterday we were supposed to do a call with the media, but we had to push it because by the time the results got uploaded, it was quite late," Narendran said in an interview with Moneycontrol

In September, reports of the UK government investing as much as $621 million into Tata Steel to decarbonise its Welsh site emerged. Britain media also reported that as many as 3,000 jobs were at risk. As per The Guardian, Staff had been braced for up to 3,000 job cuts and confirmation of the closure of two blast furnaces.

"There will be an impact on jobs. We don't like it but I think the objective is to make sure that we have a sustainable business in the UK and we continue to make steel in the UK," Narendran told Moneycontrol. He also added that Tata Steel is in talks with the unions regarding the amount of job cuts.

The United Kingdom is set to invest $621 million into Tata Steel to decarbonise its Welsh site. The UK on Friday announced that it had agreed to a joint investment package with Tata Steel for the country&rsquo;s largest steelworks in Wales.&nbsp;
The deal is aimed at securing the future of the country's steel industry but may put as many as 3,000 jobs at risk.

Out of the $1.55 billion funding package for Britain's biggest steel works, Tata is expected to invest about $931 million to pay for the switch to producing steel from lower-emission electric arc furnaces from coal-powered methods.
Britain's government has assured that this funding would safeguard about 5,000 jobs. However, the switch to lower-carbon electric furnaces may affect 3,000 jobs as the new model are less labour intensive.
As per Reuters, India-owned Tata Steel had long warned that without government help it could close its sites and British business and trade minister Kemi Badenoch said on Friday the government was securing jobs for the long-term.
"The UK government is backing our steel sector, and this proposal will secure a sustainable future for Welsh steel and is expected to save thousands of jobs in the long term," she said in a statement.
The government further said that Tata Steel UK would now inform and consult with staff and unions on the proposals.

Private steel major Tata Steel announced a total payout of Rs 314.70 crore on account of annual bonus to employees for the year 2022-2023 following the signing of a Memorandum of Settlement with Tata Workers&rsquo; Union (TWU) here. As per the Memorandum of Settlement the total payout for eligible employees of all applicable divisions of the Company on account of annual bonus will be Rs 314.70 crore, the company said in a statement on Monday.
The minimum and maximum annual bonus payable for 2022-23 will be Rs 42,561 and Rs 4,61,019 respectively.
Since majority of employees of the steel company are drawing salary higher than the limit laid down in the Payment of Bonus (Amendment) Act, 2015, they are not eligible for bonus under the Act. However, respecting our old traditions, the company is going to pay bonus to all employees in the unionized category, it said.

An incident of the steam leak has been reported at a Tata Steel plant in Odisha's Dhenkanal. According to a statement by Tata Steel, the steam escaped during an inspection work on Tuesday afternoon and it has 'affected a few people working at the site'. They have been immediately shifted to the hospital for treatment.&nbsp;

Tata Steel on Wednesday said it has supplied 1,200-tonne steel slag to Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for road construction in Arunachal Pradesh under project Arunank.
BRO is a premier organisation constructing and maintaining infrastructure in the most challenging terrain of India.
Under project Arunank, set up in 2008, construction and maintenance of roads are being undertaken by BRO in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
In a statement, Tata Steel said it has "dispatched the first ever consignment of Tata Aggreto, the company&rsquo;s branded steel slag aggregates to Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for construction of roads in Arunachal Pradesh under Project Arunank".
Tata Steel has supplied 1,200 tonnes of steel slag for project Arunank from the company's plant in Jamshedpur.
The rakes of Tata Aggreto and Tata Nirman steel slag aggregates were virtually flagged off by Union Minister of Science &amp; Technology Jitendra Singh.

Born on June 2, 1936 in Nagpur to Jiji Irani and Khorshed Irani, Dr Irani completed his BSc from Science College, Nagpur in 1956 and MSc in Geology from the Nagpur University in 1958

Jamshed J Irani, known as the steel man of India, died in Jamshedpur late Monday night, Tata Steel said. He was 85.
Irani was associated with Tata Steel for over four decades. He retired from the board of Tata Steel in June 2011, leaving behind a legacy of 43 years, which won him and the Company international acclaim in various fields.
Born on June 2, 1936 in Nagpur to Jiji Irani and Khorshed Irani, Dr Irani completed his BSc from Science College, Nagpur in 1956 and MSc in Geology from the Nagpur University in 1958.
He then went to the University of Sheffield in UK as a J N Tata scholar, where he secured a Masters in Metallurgy in 1960, and a PhD in Metallurgy in 1963.

To ensure business continuity, the company's all steel manufacturing sites in India, the UK and the Netherlands have sourced alternative supplies of raw materials to end its dependence on Russia, the company said.  India-headquartered Tata Steel sourced a limited amount of coal from Russia for its operations across geographies.Infosys, India’s second largest software services firm also pulled out of operations from Russia earlier this month.

Petrol prices have been hiked above the ₹97-level in Delhi on Sunday.
As per the Indian Oil Corporation website, petrol price was increased by 29 paise in New Delhi to&nbsp;₹97.22 per litre, while diesel was priced at ₹87.97 per litre. This is the 27th hike in fuel rates since May 4, 2021.
In some parts of Rajasthan&nbsp;and Madhya&nbsp;Pradesh, petrol prices have surged to as high as ₹108 per litre.

This is the 27th hike in fuel rates since May 4, 2021. In some parts of Rajasthan&nbsp;and Madhya&nbsp;Pradesh, petrol prices have surged to as high as ₹108 per litre.
TV Narendran, President,&nbsp;CII and&nbsp;MD &amp; CEO, Tata&nbsp;Steel, mentioned that&nbsp;the government has increased taxes on petrol-diesel for the last 3-4 years and now Centre and State governments should come forward to provide relief to the people and industry of the country. He further demanded that petroleum products should be brought under the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The government has reportedly proposed to slash import duties on steel items to zero or near-zero levels.
A decision had been taken to review duties on steel products and reduce or withdraw them altogether in a bid to help the user industry hit hard by rising price of the metal in the domestic market.

A decision had been taken to review duties on steel products and reduce or withdraw them altogether in an effort to help the user industry which has been hit hard by rising price of the metal in the domestic market. Domestic hot-rolled coil (HRC) prices rallied to a multi-year high of Rs 56,000 per tonne marking a&nbsp;a jump of over 50 per cent in last 13 months.
