Tata Motors, a key player in India's automotive industry, has declared a 2% price hike on its commercial vehicles, set to take effect from April 1, 2024. The decision comes as a measure to counterbalance the lingering impact of previous input cost escalations.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the company clarified that the price modification will be applicable across its entire range of commercial vehicles.
This announcement follows a recent 3% price increase initiated on January 1 for commercial vehicles, alongside a marginal 0.7% increment for passenger vehicles effective February 1. Tata Motors attributed these adjustments to the steady rise in input costs.
Moreover, Tata Motors recently unveiled plans for a significant structural transformation. The company disclosed its intention to divide its operations into two distinct entities through a demerger process. One entity will be dedicated to housing the commercial vehicle business and associated investments, while the other will oversee the passenger vehicle businesses, including electric vehicles, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), and related investments.
According to Tata Motors, this strategic demerger represents a natural evolution following the earlier subsidiarization of PV and EV businesses in 2022. The move aims to provide each business segment with greater autonomy to pursue tailored growth strategies, fostering agility and reinforcing accountability within the organization.

Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is set to announce plans to build a flagship electric car battery plant in the UK, according to UK media reports.
The BBC reported that people familiar with the matter said the new plant will be setup in Somerset, southwest England. Its sources claim that the government will be providing subsidies worth hundreds of millions of pounds for the new factory.
The Gigafactory follows talks with the government on the level of financial support the Tata Group would receive in return for the investment. It will be one of the most significant investments in UK automotive for decades.
The investment could lead to the creation of up to 9,000 jobs around Bridgwater in Somerset. However, its significance is pitched as a big boost for the UK's car manufacturing sector as it transitions from petrol and diesel to making electric vehicles.
Batteries typically account for more than half of the value of an electric vehicle, so a reliable supply is expected to be vital for the future of the UK car industry.
In April this year, JLR Chief Executive Adrian Mardell told reporters at a media event that the Tata Group is clear the new Gigafactory is going to be in Europe. Spain was believed to be the other site under consideration at the time.
"The important thing is our underpinning of [battery] supply is inhouse&hellip; we are the anchor customer and absolutely have equity in making sure that the right decisions are made. Wherever it (factory) goes will be an optimised proposal for us," he said.
Somerset being chosen as the site for the factory will be seen as a major achievement by the British government. The subsidies it offers Tata Motors are expected to be in the form of cash grants, energy subsidies and other training and research funding.

The electric hatchback is available at a starting price of Rs 8.49 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom) and is offered in four variant options. The base variant can be opted with the smaller battery pack only, while rest of the variants do get both the options.
The price tag makes it the most affordable electric car in India with over 250 km range.
The brand will commence the bookings of the Tiago EV on 10 October, while its deliveries will start in January 2023.&nbsp;
As of now, there are no direct competitors for the Tiago EV. However, it will serve as a more affordable alternative to the upcoming Citroen C3 EV.&nbsp;
Tata Motors currently leads the passenger vehicle EV market in India, with a market share of around 88 per cent, with Nexon EV leading the sales charts.&nbsp;

Total passenger vehicle dispatches to dealers more than doubled to 43,341 units as against 15,181 units in the year-ago month.
Similarly, domestic commercial vehicle sales surged to 31,414 units last month against 9,371 units in the same period last year.
This is the company's highest ever monthly sales since inception – PV and EV domestic combined - led by robust dispatch of Nexon, Harrier and Safari.
The automajor also reported the highest ever dispatches of electric vehicles last month at 3,454 units, up from 476 units in the same period last year.
