Four districts, including Chennai, are likely to receive heavy rain as the deep depression over Bay of Bengal and north Tamil Nadu is expected to recurve towards south Chennai, the weather office said on Tuesday.
Heavy spells accompanied by moderate thunderstorms with maximum wind velocity of 40 - 60 kmph are likely in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts, the IMD said in its latest bulletin.
The deep depression (remnant of cyclonic storm Ditwah) over west-central and adjoining areas of southwest Bay of Bengal and North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coasts remained practically stationary about 35 km from the North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts.
"It is very likely to recurve slowly southwestwards and weaken into a depression during the next 12 hours," the weather office said.
Overnight rain with strong winds made the tree branches fall in several places in the city, and several parts were heavily inundated. Chennai and its suburbs continued to experience steady rain since morning.
Ennore received a maximum of 26 cm of rainfall while Pallikaranai received a minimum of 10.5 cm in the last 24 hours.

A Chennai Metro train on the Blue Line came to a sudden halt early Tuesday morning inside the tunnel between Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Metro Station and High Court Station, leaving commuters stranded before an emergency evacuation was carried out.
The disruption occurred as the city continued to experience steady rainfall and waterlogging caused by the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah.
A video shared by news agency PTI showed passengers standing inside the stalled coach, with some trying to understand the situation while emergency lights flickered.
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) acknowledged the breakdown in a statement posted on X. &ldquo;Due to a technical issue, the metro train was halted between High Court Station and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Metro Station," the agency said.

CMRL added that passengers were immediately evacuated and the affected train was withdrawn from service. &ldquo;Normal operations have resumed at 06.20 am," the post read. The agency also apologised for the inconvenience caused to commuters.
According to NDTV, the train was headed toward the Wimco Nagar Depot when it got stuck in the subway section of the tunnel. Passengers were guided to walk along the track to exit safely.
The Blue Line&mdash;connecting Wimco Nagar Depot to Chennai International Airport&mdash;is among the busiest corridors of the metro network.
The incident came as Chennai and nearby districts remained under continuous rainfall due to the weakened Cyclone Ditwah.&nbsp;
On Monday, moderate to heavy showers caused widespread waterlogging across residential neighbourhoods, arterial roads, highways, and underpasses. Traffic slowed significantly, prompting emergency responses from civic bodies.
Chief Minister MK Stalin said he was closely monitoring the rain-related situation and had instructed officials to fast-track relief efforts in affected areas.

Cyclonic storm 'Ditwah', formed from a deep depression near the Sri Lanka coast, has begun moving towards the north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra coasts, Regional Meteorological Centre Director B Amudha said in Chennai on Thursday.
Strong winds, heavy rain and dangerous sea conditions are expected over the next few days, she added.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority met under the leadership of Chief Minister M K Stalin to review special initiatives undertaken for disaster management.
"It (Ditwah) is currently being treated as a cyclonic storm. Forecasts do not, at present, upgrade it to a severe cyclone," the RMC chief said.
However, the RMC has issued a red alert in some Cauvery Delta districts and an orange alert in five districts -- Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet and Chengalpattu for November 20 and 30.
Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai are the delta districts that have been issued a red alert.
A red alert indicates an extremely heavy rain of over 20 cm in 24 hours, while an orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm.
The name, 'Ditwah', referring to the lagoon, was suggested by Yemen, the RMC chief said. It is likely named after Detwah Lagoon, a large, saline lagoon on the northwest coast of the island of Socotra in Yemen.
Briefing reporters in the RMC's office in Chennai, Amudha said gale winds near the storm centre could reach 60&ndash;80 kmph with gusts up to 90 kmph, while outer bands are likely to experience winds of 35&ndash;45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph.
"Similar squally winds of 35&ndash;45 kmph, with gusts up to 55 kmph, are also expected over parts of the Arabian Sea adjoining Kerala, Lakshadweep and Maldives," she added.
Fishermen, especially those already in the deep sea, have been advised to completely avoid the south, central, southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal for the next five days, she said.
In the 24 hours preceding the briefing, isolated rainfall was reported in Tamil Nadu with Thangachimadam recording about 3 cm, while Puducherry and Karaikal remained largely dry, Amudha said.
Reviewing the northeast monsoon, the official said Tamil Nadu has so far received around 35 cm of rain against a normal of 34 cm from October 1, translating to roughly two per cent above normal for the season.
"However, Chennai&rsquo;s seasonal rainfall remains around 31 per cent below normal, and the storm could significantly improve the deficit if it brings widespread showers over the next few days," she said.
Possibility of landfall could be predicted only when the track and speed evolve, she added.
Following the warning by the RMC that very heavy rain (red alert) may occur in specific districts on November 29 and 30, CM Stalin has requested all government departments to coordinate among themselves and serve the people, according to an official release.
The functioning of automated weather instruments installed for real-time disaster monitoring, Chennai Real-Time Flood Forecasting System, the Integrated Flood Monitoring Center of the Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk Reduction System, the upgraded State Emergency Operations Center, the TN Alert app for the public and the TN Smart 2.0 web portal for government officials were also discussed in the meeting, the release added.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin on Friday asserted that "there will be no rest" until amending the Constitution to fix timelines for Governors to clear Bills.&nbsp;
In his first reaction to the Supreme Court's advisory opinion on the Presidential Reference, he said, "Our fight for State rights and true federalism will continue."
In a statement, Stalin said that the Supreme Court&rsquo;s opinion in its answer to the Presidential Reference will have no impact on the April 8, 2025 judgment in the case of State of Tamil Nadu vs Governor of Tamil Nadu.
In fact, the chief minister said that the Bench tendering the advisory opinion has reaffirmed several key principles. It includes an assertion that the elected government should be in the driver&rsquo;s seat, and there cannot be two executive power centres in the State. Constitutional functionaries must act within the constitutional framework &mdash; never above it, the Governor has no fourth option to kill the Bill or exercise a pocket veto (as was done by the TN Governor) and he has no option to withhold the Bill simpliciter, were among the reaffirmed principles, the CM asserted.
The top court also affirmed again that Governor cannot indefinitely delay acting on Bills. In cases of prolonged, unexplained, and indefinite delay by the Governor in considering a Bill, States can approach the Constitutional Courts and hold Governors accountable for their deliberate inactions.
The 9-Judge Bench in Ahmedabad St. Xavier&rsquo;s College Society v. State of Gujarat (1974) 1 SCC 717 (Para 109) clearly held: "Advisory opinion of the Court would have no more effect than the opinion of the law officers."
The Supreme Court&rsquo;s opinion delivered on November 20 has again rejected the Tamil Nadu Governor&rsquo;s theory of pocket veto and assertion that Bills can be killed or buried by the Raj Bhavan. The CM said, "Through our legal battle, we have now compelled Governors, including the Tamil Nadu Governor, who are at odds with the elected government across the country, to work in line with the elected government and be accountable for their deliberate inaction in response to the people&rsquo;s will through legislation."
It has also empowered Constitutional Courts to review their actions if they obstruct the passage of Bills indefinitely, and they cannot hide behind Article 361.
The CM, furthermore, said: "I believe that no constitutional authority can claim to be above the Constitution. When even a high Constitutional Authority breaches the Constitution, the Constitutional Courts are the only remedy, and the doors of the Court must not be closed. This would undermine the rule of law in our constitutional democracy and encourage breaches of the Constitution by Governors acting with political intent."
The DMK president dramatically added, "I have promises to keep, and until our people&rsquo;s will in Tamil Nadu is fulfilled through legislation, we will ensure that every constitutional apparatus functions in this country in accordance with the Constitution."
DMK MP and senior advocate P Wilson said on Thursday that the Supreme Court's "no timelines for Governors" was only an opinion and not a judgment. Hence, Wilson said such an opinion was not binding. It will also not have any impact on adjudication in the courts, the MP had told reporters.
It may be recalled that the Tamil Nadu government notified on April 12, 2025 as many as 10 Acts after the apex court judgment that said the bills adopted again by the Assembly and sent to the President by the Governor were deemed to have received assent.
The 10 bills cover state-run varsities, and a key aspect is the transfer of the powers to appoint VCs from the Governor-chancellor to the state government. It includes those to amend the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University Act, and the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Act. A bill to amend the Universities laws, the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University Act, was among the other bills.
The Madras HC had granted interim stay on the operation of these amendment Acts and the government later preferred an appeal against it in the apex court. Days ago, the Raj Bhavan denied that Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi caused a delay in giving his assent to the bills passed by the State Assembly and it said, "81 per cent of the Bills" have been assented to by the Governor.
Taking exception to certain "unfounded and factually incorrect allegations" made in public domain that the Governor was delaying assent to the bills passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, and that his "actions were against the interests of the people," the Raj Bhavan said the official records of Raj Bhavan showed of the total bills received as on October 31, 2025 as much as 81 per cent were assented.
TN Governor RN Ravi and the DMK regime led by Stalin are at loggerheads over several policy issues, and the Dravidian model government has often accused the Governor of being "biased, acting politically at the behest of the BJP government at the Centre" and deliberately delaying Bills passed by the Assembly.

Three people suspected to have been involved in the brutal sexual assault on a college student were shot at and nabbed by the police, with Chief Minister M K Stalin directing the authorities to file a chargesheet within a month and ensure the culprits in the case received maximum punishment soon.
The three men&mdash;Satish alias Karuppsamy, his brother Karthi alias Kalishewaran, both from Virudhunagar district, and their relative Guna alias Thavasi from Madurai district&mdash;were nabbed late on November 3 when they tried to attack the police team that went in search of them, City Police Commissioner A Saravana Sundar told reporters in Coimbatore.
Condemning the sexual assault, CM Stalin said the tragedy that befell the young lady was inhumane. No harsh words would be adequate to condemn such heinous crimes. "The culprits involved in the case have been traced and arrested immediately. I have ordered the police to file a chargesheet within a month and get them the maximum punishment as soon as possible," Stalin said in a post on the social media platform &lsquo;X.&rsquo;
He further said that "the progress that our women achieve in all fields will put an end to the patriarchal mentality of such perverted animals and will lead to our transformation into a completely progressive society."
According to Saravana Sundar, the investigators scanned about 300 CCTV footages and corroborated them with inputs received from the people and identified the exit route of the suspects, who were identified and swiftly traced at their hiding spot in Vellakinaru at around 10.40 pm on Monday. "They attacked the police personnel, forcing the latter to use minimum force to overpower them by opening fire below the knees," he said. A police constable was injured when the trio attacked the team.
Investigation revealed that they were related and have criminal cases including murder, theft, and hurt pending against them and were attending a court case related to a murder case. "On the night of November 2, the three robbed a two-wheeler and were travelling on the mud road near the airport when they noticed the student and her friend talking in the car," the Commissioner said.
The trio broke the car windows with stones and inflicted cut injuries on the student's male friend before dragging her to a deserted place that had no lighting facility and committed the offence. "There was no delay on the part of the police in responding to the SoS. Her friend made a call to the police control at 11.20 pm and the police arrived at the spot in 15 minutes. She was taken to the hospital after she emerged from the spot," Sundar said, adding that the woman was out of danger.
The victim was being provided psychological counselling, the Commissioner said. Satish (30), Karthi (21), and Guna (20) were labourers and had also worked in a lathe unit. Preliminary investigation revealed that the trio, after robbing a two-wheeler, had some alcoholic drinks and were proceeding by the airport when they noticed the couple and sexually assaulted the student. Police also filed a gang rape case against the three, the official said.
While one of the suspects sustained a gunshot in one leg, the other two were injured in both legs when the police opened fire, an official said. All of them have been admitted to a government medicare facility here along with the injured constable and are undergoing treatment. Further investigation is on.
The sexual assault has sent shock waves across the state and sparked political outrage with various parties demanding stringent action against the culprits. Despite being injured, the victim's friend managed to inform the police. Late in the night, the police managed to locate the victim with the help of the locals and had her admitted to a hospital.

On getting a call, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was sent to the spot early in the morning, and checks were carried out, but nothing was found, police officials added.
A constable who was at the scene said they started the search around 3 am. Initially, the search was conducted outside the house. Later, when Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam founder Vijay woke up, police were let into the house to search, he added.
"We left around 7.25 am when we found nothing," said the constable.
An Assistant Commissioner of Police told PTI that city personalities have been receiving bomb hoax mails from a Hotmail address.
"Last month, another actor-politician, S Ve Shekher also received a bomb threat mail. The content of these emails are similar. We are yet to trace that mail ID," said the official.
On October 6, a prominent national daily from Chennai, too, received a bomb threat mail claiming three RDX IEDs had been planted in their premises.
Like in previous cases, the BDD Squad declared it a hoax after a thorough search.

His response came following criticism from various quarters for not visiting Karur and meet the victims' families and the injured.
Vijay said the truth about the fatal incident will come out soon, and hinted he was ready to face action.
"You may do anything to me," he said, even as his party colleagues including senior leaders Bussy N Anand and CTR Nirmal Kumar are police facing case in connection with the September 27 stampede in Tamil Nadu's western Karur district, about 400 km from state capital Chennai.
Seeking to take on the ruling DMK over the matter, he said "CM sir, if you have a thought of seeking vengeance, you may do anything to me and not touch the party men." On the day of the incident, he had left Karur hastily, considering people's safety, he claimed.
Vijay insisted he did nothing wrong.
"I did not do any wrong; my political journey will continue with renewed vigour," the actor-politician added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a TVK source said Vijay has been asked by the police not to visit the government facility to visit the victims of the September 27 stampede due to the sensitive law and order situation.
The police have not booked any case against the actor, but registered an FIR against three key functionaries of the TVK --district secretary for Karur North Mathiazhagan, party's state general secretary Bussy Anand, and TVK deputy general secretary Nirmal Kumar, in connection with the stampede.
Also on Monday, the probe panel, headed by Justice (retd) Aruna Jagadeesan, continued with the investigation into the stampede during Vijay's rally. The judge interacted with the patients at the government hospital and later said that she would submit a detailed report to the government once the probe was completed.
The toll due to the stampede at the rally increased to 41 on Monday, with a 60-year-old woman succumbing to her injuries at the hospital here.
The three party functionaries have been booked under sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 125 (endangering life of others), and 223 (disobedience to order), of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Public Property (Preventing of Damage and Loss) Act, 1992, a police official said.
According to the police, Vijay had remained inside his campaign vehicle at Velusamypuram, the venue, for an extended period, leading to overcrowding and restlessness among the crowd that had gathered.
The stampede occurred after the crowd surged forward to have a closer glimpse of Vijay, the police said, adding that the narrow venue hardly afforded space for so many people, resulting in trampling. Police resorted to a lathi-charge in a bid to restore order. Many who fainted at the venue were rushed to the Karur government hospital.
According to the FIR, the crowd climbed over steel sheds and trees to get a better view, and when these collapsed, they fell on the crowd below, resulting in the fatal stampede. Several persons died due to suffocation and crush injuries, the FIR said.
Following the tragic incident, Vijay was advised against visiting the government hospital here as his presence might cause crowding at the hospital premises, the TVK source said.
"Initially, he had planned to visit the injured and console them, but was informed that his presence might cause further crowding," a senior TVK leader said.
Following the tragic incident, the state government constituted a one-person enquiry commission under retired Justice Jagadeesan to investigate the incident.
Chief Minister M K Stalin, who had visited the victims, announced a solatium of Rs 10 lakh each to the affected families. Also, he had assured to take appropriate action based on the findings of the Commission.
Police protection at the government facility has been stepped up.
Meanwhile, former Telangana Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan has claimed that the one-person enquiry commission was unlikely to be impartial, as it might not probe the police intelligence failure and other aspects.
"I have been in the administration. I can say that the Commission's probe would not be partial because there has been a police intelligence failure. The police failed to take note of the swelling numbers at the rally spot," Soundararajan told reporters in Chennai.
Further, there was no indication that senior police officials had visited the venue to regulate the crowd. None of the police officials has faced government action like suspension for the tragic incident, she added.
Expelled AIADMK leader V K Sasikala, who met the affected families, demanded a probe by a central agency.
"The power went off within minutes after the meeting concluded, and when it returned, people had already started rushing. The truth will emerge only when the matter is investigated thoroughly by a central agency," Sasikala told reporters.

AIADMK's organising secretary and former MP Anwar Raja, who is the minority face of the opposition party in Ramanathapuram, joined the DMK in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin here on Monday.
The strongman from Ramanathapuram, who has been critical of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami since the party revived poll ties with the BJP, said he was left with no option but to join the DMK to protect Tamil Nadu from the threats, including Hindi imposition and state autonomy posed by the BJP-led government at the Centre.
Raja said, "The BJP's agenda is to destroy the AIADMK first and then fight against the DMK. Not even once Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that Palaniswami would be the Chief Minister candidate. He had only said that NDA would form the government in Tamil Nadu." Following the sudden political development, the AIADMK expelled Raja from the party. A party senior said the AIADMK would not face any set back because of Anwar Raja joining the ruling dispensation.
"AIADMK leader Palaniswami is unable to confirm that he is the CM candidate during his tour programme to redeem Tamil Nadu. Its only EPS (Palaniswami) who is claiming to be the CM candidate," Raja told reporters at Anna Arivalayam, the DMK state headquarters.
He and some former state ministers were of the view that the BJP's goal is not to contest the elections but only to destroy the Dravidian parties in the state.
"We already told Palaniswami that if the AIADMK forges alliance with the BJP, it will destroy the AIADMK like that party is doing in the non-BJP ruled states. See what's happening in West Bengal," he said.
The former MP alleged that the BJP was "a negative force" in Tamil Nadu and people would not accept it. "I had already appealed to AIADMK leaders to protect the party and there was no one to listen. So, with no alternative left, I had to join the DMK - the only choice for me." He claimed that "Thalapathi" (Stalin) would definitely become the CM again as people always voted based on their leaders' abilities since the times of former Chief Minister C N Annadurai.
"I wish to ask, is there any leader in Tamil Nadu who can equal Stalin, on whom people have reposed faith," he asked.
Whenever there was a threat to Tamil Nadu, Stalin, as an exemplary Chief Minister, approached the Supreme court and obtained orders in favour of the state.
Also, as a leader is unified the Chief Ministers of non-BJP ruled states and sharpened the defence of state interest against the BJP government. "People want him to return as Chief Minister. And people will give a massive victory to the DMK," Raja said.

Chennai: AIADMK top leader Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday wondered if Chief Minister MK Stalin and the DMK had locus standi to utter Dravidian icon C N Annadurai's name and slammed the CM for "speaking politics in government function". Palaniswami's tirade follows Stalin's "AIADMK has mortgaged the name of Anna itself," jibe.
Alleging that the Chief Minister did nothing for the people during the past 4-year rule of the DMK, Palaniswami in a statement said the AIADMK was founded by late leader M G Ramachandran in 1972 as Karunanidhi "buried Anna's ideology" and transformed the DMK into a "family camp for loot".
Further, the leader of opposition said: "We will not give up Anna even for a day, even a minute, who lives not only in our party's name and flag, but also in our blood." The AIADMK top leader yet again blamed the DMK for "family rule" and said it went against the ideology of Anna, who founded the DMK in 1949.
Stalin, who has only "commission, collection and corruption as policy," need not lecture the AIADMK on Periyar and Anna, Palaniswami said. The former chief minister vowed that "peace, prosperity, growth, and state rights, lost due to the DMK", would be retrieved by him following a win in the 2026 Assembly election. He said this was his first poll assurance.
In a government event at Tirupathur near Vellore, the chief minister, without naming the BJP or any Right wing outfit, said they were trying hard to cause confusion. Invoking the legacy of Periyar, Anna, and Karunanidhi, and hailing them for nurturing and shaping the state, Stalin said: "You (Hindu Munnani/BJP) are playing video, trivializing such leaders! When such a video clip was played, the mute spectators were those who run their party in the name of Anna," the DMK president hit out at the AIADMK, the archrival.
"They (AIADMK) have mortgaged the name of Anna itself. Those who have mortgaged their party, should not be allowed to mortgage Tamil Nadu tomorrow," he said and urged the people to understand the objective of the conspiracy against Tamil Nadu and and its people and teach a fitting lesson to the AIADMK and BJP. Annadurai passed away on February 3, 1969. He was the chief minister from 1967 to 1969.

Mobility tech firm Schaeffler India on Wednesday said it has invested Rs 1,700 crore over the last three years to expand its capabilities, including expansion of new product lines for powertrain solutions and e-mobility solutions, in the domestic market.
The company also announced the inauguration of its manufacturing plant at Shoolagiri in Tamil Nadu for powertrain and chassis components and futuristic technologies as part of its strategy to address growing market demands within the automotive industry.
The manufacturing facility will serve as a hub for production and expansion of conventional and electrified powertrain technologies, including planetary gear systems, hybrid transmission components, and new emerging innovations primarily catering to the domestic market.
The other four manufacturing plants are located in Pune, Vadodara (2) and Hosur besides three research and development centres.
As compared to the initial commitment of Rs 1,500 crore, Schaeffler India has invested Rs 1,700 crore over the last three years (from 2022 to 2024) to expand its local capabilities in India. This includes the expansion of new product lines for powertrain solutions, e-mobility solutions as well as large and medium-sized bearings for industrial applications, the company said.
The company said it has also strengthened its presence in the digital automotive aftermarket space, with the acquisition of KRSV Innovative Auto Solutions Pvt Ltd (Koovers), a B2B e-commerce platform in 2023.
"India is a key market for Schaeffler. The new facility is a significant step in our efforts to expand our global manufacturing footprint and further localization in the region. It supports our long-term growth vision and positions us to better cater to the rising market demands and grow with the Indian market," said Matthias Zink, CEO powertrain and chassis at Schaeffler AG.
With the new manufacturing facility, the company also aims to increase its transmission component capacity significantly.
"With the expansion of our production facilities, we are well-positioned to cater not only to the present local markets but also future needs as we transition towards E-mobility," said Harsha Kadam, Managing Director and CEO, Schaeffler India Limited.

Lok Sabha disrupted over Tamil Nadu's stance on PM SHRI scheme as DMK protests against alleged dishonesty remarks by Education Minister Pradhan.

Lok Sabha proceedings were on Monday adjourned for about 30 minutes after DMK members protested over Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's remarks that the Tamil Nadu government was "dishonest" on the issue of implementing the PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme.
Replying to a question on the PM SHRI scheme, Pradhan said the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government has changed its stand on implementing the centrally-sponsored scheme which envisaged strengthening the schools managed by central, state or local bodies.
The state concerned has to sign an MoU with the central government that it would implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and in return the central government provides the fund.
"The Tamil Nadu government had initially agreed to sign the MoU. But now they have changed the stand. Many non-BJP-ruled states, including Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh, have signed the agreement," he said.
Pradhan said: "They are dishonest and they are ruining the future of the students of Tamil Nadu. They are doing politics".
The minister said at one point of time, the government of Tamil Nadu had agreed to the PM SHRI scheme and several (DMK) MPs, who came to see him, conveyed this to him.
"But when they went back, they made a U-Turn. They are doing mischief with the life of the students. They are misleading the people and doing injustice to students of Tamil Nadu. They are undemocratic...," he alleged.
Pradhan said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin had also agreed initially "but suddenly some super CM appeared and they took a U-Turn. They just want to do politics".
"Today is March 10. We have still 20 days left in the month of March," he said, indicating the time left for the Tamil Nadu government to sign the MoU on PM SHRI.
Taking strong exception to the minister's remarks, the DMK members registered strong protests by raising slogans against the central government.
Speaker Om Birla asked the agitating members to return to their seats and allow the House to function normally.
Birla said he has given the opposition members opportunity to pose questions and subsequently the minister has replied. "But now you are doing this (protests). This is not good. You are setting wrong precedent. Don't violate the Parliamentary procedures," he said.
However, the DMK members ignored his pleas and continued their protests.
After sometime, Birla adjourned the House till 12 noon.
When the House reassembled at 12 noon, DMK member Kanimozhi told the House that she was "very pained and hurt" by a particular word used by the minister.
She also said that she and other DMK MPs, along with the Tamil Nadu Education Minister, had met Pradhan to request him to release funds to the state under education schemes.
"We have clearly said that we have issues with the NEP and we cannot accept it in full. We said that three language formula is not acceptable to Tamil Nadu.
"The truth is that the chief minister of Tamil Nadu had written to the minister as well as the Prime Minister saying that we have issues with NEP and cannot accept it in total. He had also requested to release the funds," she said, adding "the MPs of Tamil Nadu have never accepted the NEP".
Responding to Kanimozhi, Pradhan said, "My esteemed colleague, one of my dearest sisters and senior member honourable Kanimozhi has raised two points. In one point she has said that I have used a word which I should not have been used for the members from Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu government and people of Tamil Nadu".
"Lets don't mix it. Let me withdraw it. I withdraw my word if it has hurt anyone. I have no issues on that," he said.
Pradhan said the MPs have met him on several occasions and the education minister of Tamil Nadu was also part of the delegation, which was in a good spirit that something (solution) should come up.
"I was also open. We have agreed on certain things. They went back and mentioned this to the chief minister who has also given his consent to go ahead. Later, they told me informally that certain issues have come up. This is unfortunate," he said.
The minister said since today is March 10, there is time and the Tamil Nadu government can come back on what issues they have agreed to and the central government would respond to that.
"We have no issues with the non-BJP ruled states -- Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab," he said.
After Pradhan's comments, the Speaker said since the minister withdrew the word that he had used, he (Birla) too has directed to expunge the word from the records.
Last month, Stalin had said he was firm on his stance of not implementing the NEP in Tamil Nadu even if the Centre offered to provide Rs 10,000 crore to the state.
The chief minister said the opposition to the NEP is not merely over the "imposition of Hindi" but there are several other factors that would have serious consequences on the future of students and the social justice system.
The total cost of the PM SHRI scheme will be Rs 27,360 crore spread over a period of five years which includes central share of Rs 18,128 crore.
A total of 12,079 schools have been selected from 32 states and UTs of which 1,329 schools are primary, 3,340 schools are elementary, 2,921 schools are secondary and 4,489 schools are senior secondary.

Stepping up the pressure on Centre, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday proposed that the 1971 Census be the basis for delimitation of Parliamentary constituencies for 30 years starting 2026 and favoured a Joint Action Committee (JAC) involving all southern states to press for related demands.
At an all-party meeting on delimitation here that was attended by main opposition AIADMK among others, Stalin, moving a resolution, said that in the event of increase in the number of seats in Parliament, the 1971 Census should be the basis for it and that appropriate Constitutional amendment should be done.
Also, the 1971 population data should be the basis for delimitation of LS seats for 30 years from 2026 and Prime Minister Narendra Modi should make an assurance in the Parliament, he asserted.
The JAC is to take forward such demands and create awareness among the people and the meet unanimously opposed delimitation exercise based on population, which will be a "threat to federalism and the rights of southern states to political representation."
Tamil Nadu's present representational percentage in Parliament, which is 7.18, should not be changed under any circumstances.
Resolutions, supported by parties including the Edappadi K Palaniswami-led AIADMK, were passed in the meeting to urge the Centre to accept the demands of Tamil Nadu on the issue. One of the key points underscored in the meeting was that there shall not be any reduction in the number of LS seats.
The meet underscored that Tamil Nadu is not against delimitation of Parliamentary constituencies. However, the proposed exercise must not become a punishment for implementing well the socio-economic welfare measures during the past 50 years.
The Centre declined to heed to the voice of the state, which has 39 Lok Sabha MPs. In case this number was reduced, it would become a big injustice for the state.
The CM said that the all-party meeting is for understanding that the state has been pushed to a corner on the issue of delimitation, thereby prompting it to take up a struggle movement to secure its rights. "The delimitation sword is hanging over the head of south India and Tamil Nadu will be severely affected," Stalin alleged.
The AIADMK, the Congress and Left parties, actor-politician Vijay's TVK, Kamal Haasan-founded Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) among others attended the meeting which was boycotted by the BJP, Tamil nationalist Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) and former union minister GK Vasan's Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar).
The ruling DMK has been staunchly opposing the delimitation exercise, with party president and chief minister Stalin claiming it will lead to reduced LS seats in TN. He has wondered whether the state was being punished for effective implementation of population control measures over the years.
Recently Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said the delimitation exercise will not affect southern states, including Tamil Nadu, and had accused Stalin of spreading a misinformation campaign on the matter.
Seeking to put to rest speculation on the subject, he had asserted no southern state would see a reduction in the Parliamentary representation when delimitation will be done on pro-rata basis. The DMK had questioned this assertion as well, asking the basis for pro rata--whether on population or the existing constituency of MP or MLAS.
CMs of two other southern states--Siddaramaiah and A Revanth Reddy of Congress-ruled Karnataka and Telangana, respectively, have also questioned Shah over his assertion on delimitation.

Dismissing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin's claim that the state was denied central funds, Shah countered, "There is no truth in MK Stalin's statement. The Modi government has given Rs 5 lakh crore to Tamil Nadu in the last five years."&nbsp;
He further said that a comparison between funds allocated under the UPA and NDA governments proves that Tamil Nadu faced actual injustice during the UPA regime.

Reacting to the latest incident on Saturday, where Indian fishermen were arrested and their boats seized, Palaniswami expressed his "shock" and highlighted the growing frustration among the affected families.
"The family members of the fishermen regret that these arrests and boat seizures are becoming more frequent. They feel the DMK government limits itself to writing letters to the Centre and moves on," the former Chief Minister said in a post on 'X'.
Palaniswami called on the 39 Lok Sabha MPs from the DMK-led alliance to apply "requisite pressure" in Parliament to end the arrests and ensure the safe return of the fishermen and their impounded boats.
