Taliban founder Mullah Omar's burial place disclosed nine years after death

A Taliban spokesman on November 6 confirmed that death was kept secret to avoid any damage to the tomb given Afghanistan&rsquo;s territorial vicinity that has &lsquo;a lot of enemies.&rsquo;

The Taliban on November 6 revealed that the burial of their founder Mullah Omar has been placed in Suri district of Zabul province.
A Taliban spokesman told AFP Sunday that senior leaders of the movement attended a ceremony at his gravesite, adding that death was kept secret to avoid any damage to the tomb from enemies.&rsquo;
He also confirmed that Omar's final resting place is now available for common people as well.
Rumours of Omar&rsquo;s health and whereabouts had started floating after Taliban was forced out of Afghanistan following US invasion. It was in 2015 when they confirmed that their founder died in 2013.
Omar founded the Taliban in 1993 as an alternative and a defying force against the Soviet Union. He died aged 55.
The now ruling regime in Afghanistan, Taliban took control of the country last year after ousting the Ashraf Ghani&rsquo;s government in the wake of US forces withdrawing from the country.

The Taliban didn't take the Afghan capital — they were invited, says the man who issued the invitation.
In an Associated Press interview, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai offered some of the first insights into the secret and sudden departure of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani — and how he came to invite the Taliban into the city "to protect the population so that the country, the city doesn't fall into chaos and the unwanted elements who would probably loot the country, loot shops."  
When Ghani left, his security officials also left. Defense minister Bismillah Khan even asked Karzai if he wanted to leave Kabul when Karzai contacted him to know what remnants of the government still remained. It turned out there were none. Not even the Kabul police chief had remained.
Karzai, who was the country's president for 13 years after the Taliban were first ousted in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, refused to leave.
In a wide-ranging interview at his tree-lined compound in the center of the city where he lives with his wife and young children, Karzai was adamant that Ghani's flight scuttled a last-minute push by himself, the government's chief negotiator Abdullah Abdullah and the Taliban leadership in Doha that would have seen the Taliban enter the capital as part of a negotiated agreement.  
The countdown to a possible deal began Aug. 14, the day before the Taliban came to power.
Karzai and Abdullah met Ghani, and they agreed that they would leave for Doha the next day with a list of 15 others to negotiate a power-sharing agreement.
The Taliban were already on the outskirts of Kabul, but Karzai said the leadership in Qatar promised the insurgent force would remain outside the city until the deal was struck.
Early on the morning of Aug. 15, Karzai said, he waited to draw up the list. The capital was fidgety, on edge. Rumors were swirling about a Taliban takeover. Karzai called Doha. He was told the Taliban would not enter the city.
At noon, the Taliban called to say that "the government should stay in its positions and should not move that they have no intention to (go) into the city," Karzai said.
"I and others spoke to various officials and assurances were given to us that, yes, that was the case, that the Americans and the government forces were holding firm to the places (and) that Kabul would would not fall."
By about 2:45 p.m., though, it became apparent Ghani had fled the city. Karzai called the defense minister, called the interior minister, searched for the Kabul police chief. Everyone was gone. "There was no official present at all in the capital, no police chief, no corps commander, no other units. They had all left."
Ghani's own protection unit's deputy chief called Karzai to come to the palace and take over the presidency. He declined, saying legally he had no right to the job. Instead the former president decided to make a public, televised message, with his children at his side "so that the Afghan people know that we are all here."
Karzai was adamant that there would have been an agreement for a peaceful transition had Ghani remained in Kabul.
"Absolutely. Absolutely. That is what we were preparing for, what we were hoping (along) with the chairman of the peace council to go to Doha that evening, or the next morning, and to finalize the agreement," he said. "And I believe the Taliban leaders were also waiting for us in Doha for the same ... objective, for the same purpose."
Today, Karzai meets regularly with the Taliban leadership and says the world must engage with them. Equally important, he said, is that Afghans have to come together.
War has dominated Afghanistan for more than 40 years, and in the last 20 years "Afghans have suffered on all sides," he said. "Afghans have lost lives on all sides. . . . The Afghan army has suffered. Afghan police have suffered, the Taliban soldiers have suffered."
He added: "An end to that can only come when Afghans get together, find their own way out."
The former president has a plan. In his talks with the Taliban, he is advocating the temporary resurrection of the constitution that governed when Afghanistan was a monarchy. The idea was also floated during earlier Doha talks.
At the same time, a traditional Loya Jirga — a grand council of all Afghans, including women — would be convened. It would decide the country's future, including a representative government, a constitution, a national flag.  
There's no indication the Taliban will accept his formula, though he says they have not rejected it in discussions. A jirga is a centuries-old Afghan tradition for decision-making and is particularly popular among ethnic Pashtuns, which make up the backbone of the Taliban.
Karzai said a future Afghanistan has to have universal education rights for boys and girls and women "must find their place in the Afghan polity, in the administration, in economic activity and social activity, the political activity in all ways of life. ... That's an issue on which there cannot be any compromise."
But until it happens, Karzai says, the world has to engage with the Taliban. Afghanistan needs to operate. Government servants have to be paid. Health care facilities need to function.
"Right now, they need to cooperate with the government in any form they can," said Karzai. who also bemoaned the unchallenged and sometimes wrong international perceptions of the Taliban.
He cited claims that women and girls are not allowed outside their homes or require a male companion. "That's not true. There are girls on the streets — women by themselves." The situation on the ground in Kabul bears this out.
Asked to describe the Taliban, Karzai said: "I would describe them as Afghans, but Afghans who have gone through a very difficult period in their lives as all other Afghans have done for the past 40 years."
We "have been through an extremely difficult period of our history in which we, the Afghans, have made mistakes on all sides, in which the international community and those who interacted with us have made tremendous mistakes," Karzai said.
"It's time for all of us to realize that, and to look back at the mistakes that we have all made and to make it better."

Amid spate of attacks on Chinese nationals in Pakistan, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Kabul on Thursday in a trip that was not earlier announced. 
Afghanistan's acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi received Yi on arrival in Kabul along with a high-level delegation. The two sides held talks on important issues, focusing on China’s role in stability and development.
The visit comes a week before Beijing hosts a two-day conference, on March 30-31, of Afghanistan's neighbours on how to assist the Taliban government. Pakistan and Iran had earlier hosted similar meetings of these neighbouring countries after the Taliban takeover.
Yi's visit is the first by a senior Chinese leader after the Taliban took control of Kabul in August and comes right after he completed his three-day visit to Islamabad where he attended the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation's foreign minister’s conference, which ended yesterday, as a special guest.The Chinese foreign minister’s visit might give a diplomatic boost to the Taliban government, which is yet to be recognised by any country.

The family of slain Pulitzer-winning photojournalist Danish Siddiqui has lodged a complaint with the International Criminal Court to probe his killing and to bring to book those responsible, including high-level commanders and leaders of the Taliban, their lawyer Avi Singh said on Tuesday.
Siddiqui, 38, was on assignment in Afghanistan when he was killed on July 16 last year. The journalist was covering clashes between Afghan troops and the Taliban in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar city.
Addressing a press conference, Singh said the formal complaint has been filed against Taliban commanders, including Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, Supreme Commander of the Taliban; Mullah Hassan Akhund, Head of the Taliban Leadership Council; Mawlawi Muhammad Yaqoob Mujahid, Minister of Defence, Taliban; Gul Agha Sherzai, Governor of the Kandahar Province; Zabbihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesperson; and Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, Head of Taliban's Political Office in Qatar.
The complaint has also been filed against local commanders as well as perpetrators.
Singh said they will also be seeking help from the Indian government in the matter.
"We have just filed before the International Criminal Court (ICC) a complaint with regard to the condition of war crimes and crimes against humanity on and about July 16 in the context of Pulitzer prize winning photojournalist Danish Siddiqui's murder," he said.
The lawyer said the complaint has been filed on behalf of Siddiqui's parents -- Akhtar Siddiqui and Shahida Akhtar.
Singh said the journalist was attacked by the Red Unit of the Taliban. He said the body was mutilated, including being run over by a heavy vehicle in public. The body revealed marks of brutal torture and 12 bullets' entry and exit points, the lawyer said.
"The Taliban targeted and killed Siddiqui because he was a journalist and an Indian. That is an international crime. In the absence of rule of law in Afghanistan, the ICC has jurisdiction to investigate and try the perpetrators of Siddiqui's murder. As the Taliban strives for international legitimacy, it must face accountability for its past actions," he said.
Singh further said there are sufficient independent sources on what happened on July 16 after the journalist was injured in the attack where he was on an assignment by Reuters.
"He was taken to a mosque for medical treatment and despite the mosque being historically an international customary place of refuge, it was attacked by the Taliban. Siddiqui had very clear identification that he was press. He had his passport on him and he was not a combatant.
"He was then illegally detained, by all independent accounts, he was tortured thereafter. In fact, his bullet-proof jacket was intact when his body was received by the family," Singh added.
Siddiqui's brother Omar Siddiqui said the perpetrators must be brought to justice.
"It has been quite painful with what happened with Danish and we have not totally come out of this. I know it is a very long journey which we are taking, but it is a moral obligation and our responsibility to pursue what happened with him, and the perpetrators should be brought to justice," he said.
Siddiqui's mother, Shahida Akhtar said, "Danish, our loving son was murdered by the Taliban for simply carrying out his journalistic duties.
"He was subjected to barbaric levels of torture and mutilation while in their custody. Danish always stood for honesty and integrity in his work. He always showcased the pain and suffering of the people. He was brave and courageous all along," she said.
Singh said the torture and murder of Siddiqui is not an isolated case. The Taliban's military code of conduct, published as the Layha, has a policy of attacking civilians, including journalists. It has claimed responsibility, with impunity, for the targeted abductions and killings of journalists and other members of the civil society.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan documents over 70,000 civilian casualties attributed to the Taliban.
The International Criminal Court has been engaged in an ongoing investigation on international crimes, including crimes against humanity and war crimes, in Afghanistan, over which it has jurisdiction after Afghanistan's government acceded to the Rome Statute.

He says with the mutual consent of a kidney donor and buyer a complete kidney transplant operation costs around 600,000 Afghanis (6,000 US dollars) to 800,000 Afghanis (8,000 US dollars.)
Depending on the blood type kidneys can cost between 200,000 Afghanis (2,000 US dollars) and 400,000 Afghanis (4,000 US dollars.) with hospital charges, medicine and operation fees reaching 400,000 Afghanis (4,000 US dollars.)
Ahmad adds that many of the people selling their kidneys are the most vulnerable, struggling to feed their families.
Most of the donors who come forward to sell their kidneys come from poor families affected by the  devastating economic crisis in Afghanistan, and they are not aware of the dangers that losing a kidney could bring.
Internal Medicine Specialist Doctor Ahmad Shekaib said that while people may get short term economic gain from selling their organs, they are risking their lives.
"Most of the people who sell their kidneys due to economic problems will face health problems in the long run for lacking a kidney," said Dr. Shekaib.
In Qudoosabad village in the Kohsan district of Herat province, 40-year-old Ghulam Hazrat sold his kidney for 230,000 Afghanis (2,300 US dollars) a month ago to both feed his family, and pay for an failed trip to illegally enter Iran in search of a job.
A month after the Taliban returned to power Hazrat borrowed 20,000 Afghanis (200 dollars) and paid a smuggler to get him to Iran, where he hoped to find a job, but he was arrested and deported back to Afghanistan by Iranian authorities.
Upon his return he felt he had no other option but to sell his kidney to make ends meet for his family.
"I couldn't go out and beg for money, I was not able to beg, then I decided to go to the hospital and sell my kidney, so I could at least feed my children for some time," said Hazrat.
The doctor prescribed him a year's rest to recover from the operation, and said to avoid doing any heavy work, but Hazrat is not sure what he will do when the money he got for his kidney is gone.
While the United Nations this week announced a 5 billion US dollars appeal to help both Afghanistan and its neighbouring countries, much of it intended to pay for essential workers and humanitatian efforts, ordinary Afghans are surrounded with harsh challenges.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Germany would be stepping up its humanitarian aid for Afghanistan but suggested such assistance would only continue if human rights are respected.
