China's sabre-rattling has intensified in recent years under President Xi Jinping, and Russia's invasion of Ukraine has further deepened worries in Taiwan that Beijing might move similarly to annex the island.

China's "intimidation and threats against Taiwan are getting more obvious", President Tsai Ing-wen told a press conference after a high-level government meeting on national security.
"No one wants war... but my fellow countrymen, peace will not fall from the sky."
"The current four-month military service is not enough to meet the fast and ever-changing situation," she said. "We have decided to restore the one-year military service from 2024."
The extended requirement will apply to men born after January 1, 2005, Tsai added.
Mandatory service used to be deeply unpopular in Taiwan, and its previous government had reduced it from one year to four months with the aim of creating a mainly volunteer force.
But recent polling showed more than three-quarters of the Taiwanese public now believes that is too short.
Tsai described the extension as "an extremely difficult decision... to ensure the democratic way of life for our future generations".
"We can only avoid a war by preparing for a war and we can only stop a war by being capable of fighting a war."
The prospect of a Chinese invasion has increasingly worried Western nations and many of China's neighbours.
Xi, China's most authoritarian leader in decades, has made clear that what he calls the "reunification" of Taiwan cannot be passed on to future generations.
Taiwan and China split at the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, and Tsai has said becoming a part of China is not acceptable to the people of the island.
Taiwan is a mountainous island and would present a formidable challenge to an invading force, but it is massively outgunned with 89,000 ground forces compared with China's one million, according to a Pentagon estimate released last month.
Beijing also has a huge advantage in military equipment.
Taiwan has stepped up reservist training and increased its purchases of warplanes and anti-ship missiles to bolster its defences. But experts have said that is not enough.
The island needs to go further than just extending mandatory service, said J. Michael Cole, a Taipei-based analyst.
"Given the threat level and the example of Russia in Ukraine, I hope the Taiwanese public realises that such measures are needed," he told AFP.
"The threat that Taiwan faces is just as existential."
The military service announcement on Tuesday came two days after Chinese military exercises near Taiwan, which were held in response to what Beijing described as "provocations" and "collusion" between Washington and Taipei.

European lawmakers arrive in Taiwan to show support

A group of European parliamentarians arrived in Taiwan on Thursday to show support and strengthen the relations between Taiwan and European countries.
The lawmakers from Ukraine, Germany, UK, Kosovo, Czech Republic, Belgium, and the Netherlands are in Taiwan to promote greater parliamentary exchange and increase cooperation in trade, investment, and technology.
They are the first formal Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) delegation to visit Taiwan since the alliance was founded in June 2020.
The IPAC co-chair Reinhard Butikofer was awarded with the Grand Medal of Diplomacy in recognition for his contribution on enhancing relations between Taiwan and EU.
Butikofer spoke through a video call from his hotel room due to testing positive for COVID-19 when he arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists at the news conference in Taipei, Belgian parliamentarian Els Van Hoof said rule of laws and human rights are under pressure from the People's Republic of China, and EU countries need to cooperate.

Ou Yang was posted as the deputy head of the Taiwanese military-owned National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology early this year to supervise various missile production projects, CNA&nbsp; report stated.

Ou Yang Li-Hsing, the deputy head of Taiwan defence ministry's research and development unit, was on Saturday found dead in a hotel room in southern Taiwan, according to Taiwan's official Central News Agency, reported Reuters.
According to the news report, Ou Yang was on a business trip to Pingtung. Authorities are looking into the cause of his death. Ou Yang was posted as the deputy head of the military-owned National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology early this year to supervise various missile production projects, the report stated.

The news of his death comes hours after Taiwan's military said that the Chinese planes and ships operating in the Taiwan Strait were simulating an attack on its main island amid tensions between Beijing and Taipei following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island nation.
Beijing reportedly conducted military drills with more than 100 warplanes and 10 warships surrounding Taiwan's main island.
Preceding Nancy Pelosi's visit, China, which considers Taiwan as part of its territory, had warned that it will take "resolute and forceful measures to firmly defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity."&nbsp;

The Joe Biden administration has announced a more than USD1 billion arms sale to Taiwan as US-China tensions escalate over the status of the island.
The USD1.09 billion sale includes USD355 million for Harpoon air-to-sea missiles and USD85 million for Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, the State Department said.
However, the largest portion of the sale is a USD655 million logistics support package for Taiwan's surveillance radar program, which provides air defence warnings. Early warning air defence systems have become more important as China has stepped up military drills near Taiwan, which it regards as a renegade province.

It also urged Beijing &rdquo;to cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressure against Taiwan and instead engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan." The acrimony and strident rhetoric between the U.S. and China over Taiwan have increased sharply since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island last month. Since Pelosi's trip to Taipei there have been at least two other congressional visits and several by governors of US states, all of which China has condemned.
On Thursday, Taiwan's military said it shot down a drone hovering over one of its island outposts just off the Chinese coast in an incident that underscored the heightened tensions. A day earlier, Taiwan said it had warned off drones hovering over three of the islands it occupies off the coast of the Chinese port city of Xiamen.
China claims Taiwan as its own territory, to be annexed by force if necessary. The sides split after a civil war in 1949 and have no official relations, with China cutting off even informal contacts following the election of independence-leaning Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in 2016.
Tsai's administration has pushed for a strengthening of anti-drone defenses as part of a 12.9 per cent increase in its Defense Ministry's annual budget next year. That would boost defense spending by an additional 47.5 billion New Taiwan dollars (USD1.6 billion), for a total of 415.1 billion NTD (USD13.8 billion).

Taiwan's forces said in a statement that troops took the action on Tuesday after drones were found hovering over the Kinmen island group. Dadan, one of the islands where a drone was spotted, lies roughly 15 kilometres (9 miles) off the Chinese coast.
The statement Wednesday referred to the unmanned aerial vehicles as being of &ldquo;civilian use," but gave no other details.
It said the drones returned to the nearby Chinese city of Xiamen after the shots were fired. Taiwan previously fired only flares as warnings.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions after China fired missiles into the sea and sent planes and ships across the dividing line in the Taiwan Strait earlier this month.
It followed angry rhetoric from Beijing over a trip to Taiwan by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the highest-ranking US dignitary to visit the island in 25 years.
China claims Taiwan as its own territory and its recent actions have been viewed as a rehearsal of a possible blockade or invasion.
China's drills brought strong condemnation from Taiwan's chief ally, the US, along with fellow regional democracies such as Australia and Japan. Some of China's missiles early in August fell into nearby Japan's exclusive economic zone.
Taiwan maintains control over a range of islands in the Kinmen and Matsu groups in the Taiwan Strait, a relic of the effort by Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists to maintain a foothold on the mainland after being driven out by Mao Zedong's Communists amid civil war in 1949.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry said China's actions failed to intimidate the island's 23 million people, saying they had only hardened support for the armed forces and the status quo of de-facto independence.

Officials said anti-drone defences were being strengthened, part of a 12.9 per cent increase in the Defense Ministry's annual budget next year. The government is planning to spend an additional 47.5 billion New Taiwan dollars (USD 1.6 billion), for a total of 415.1 billion NTD (USD 13.8 billion) for the year.
The US is also reportedly preparing to approve a USD 1.1 billion defence package for Taiwan that would include anti-ship and air-to-air missiles to be used to repel potential Chinese invasion attempts.
Following the Chinese drills, the US sailed two warships through the Taiwan Strait, which China has sought to designate as its sovereign waters. Foreign delegations from the US, Japan and European nations have continued to arrive to lend Taipei diplomatic and economic support.
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey is currently visiting Taiwan to discuss the production of semiconductors, the critical chips that are used in everyday electronics and have become a battleground in the technology competition between the US and China.
Ducey is seeking to woo suppliers for the new USD 12 billion Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (TSMC) plant being built in his state.
The governor is also visiting tech powerhouse South Korea, and in a statement on his official website said his aim was to take these relationships to the next level - to strengthen them, expand them and ensure they remain mutually beneficial.&rdquo; Last week, the Indiana governor visited Taiwan on a similar mission.
Taiwanese Air Force pilots have also trained at Luke Air Force Base outside Phoenix for more than 25 years, an indication of continuing US support for Taiwan's defence despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties.
Taiwan produces more than half the global supply of high-end processor chips. China's firing of missiles during its exercises disrupted shipping and air traffic and highlighted the possibility that chip exports might be interrupted.
Reacting to Ducey's visit, China on Wednesday reaffirmed its opposition to any official contacts between the US and Taiwan.
That was a further reminder of the Communist Party's refusal to acknowledge the separation of powers within the US government and the right of American local officials to operate independently of the administration.
&ldquo;We urge the relevant parties in the US to ... stop any forms of official contacts with Taiwan, and refrain from sending wrong signals to the Taiwan independence forces," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a daily briefing.
&ldquo;China will take strong measures to resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Zhao said.

Responding to a question on Taiwan MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "Like many other countries, India too is concerned about this development (in Taiwan). We urge the exercise of restraint, avoidance of unilateral actions to change status quo, de-escalation of tensions & efforts to maintain peace & stability in the region."
On Beijing's 'One-China' remark, Bagchi said India's relevant policies are well known and consistent and don't require reiteration

Mirage fighter jets took off from Taiwan's airbase in Hsinchu Friday morning as China sent military ships and war planes across the mid-line of the Taiwan Strait.
According to the Taiwanese Defense Ministry, several China military planes and navy vessels have crossed what had been an unofficial buffer zone between China and Taiwan for decades.
When speaking to journalists at a ceremony in Taipei, Premier Su Tseng-chang called China "an evil neighbor" and said its military actions caused multiple cancelations on the busiest lanes of international shipping.
Su urged China to focus on taking care of their own people and stop military provocation.
The Chinese exercises involve troops from the navy, air force, rocket force, strategic support force and logistic support force, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.
