Indian table tennis will never be the same again. &nbsp; Achanta Sharath Kamal, the player who carried Indian table tennis to the global stage, has announced his retirement from professional play. The WTT Star Contender event in Chennai, scheduled from March 25 to 30, will mark the swansong of one of India&rsquo;s most celebrated athletes.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I played my first international tournament in Chennai, I will be playing my last international also in Chennai. This will be my last tournament as a professional athlete,&rdquo; he posted on his social media handle X (formerly twitter).

Sharath&rsquo;s journey began in the 1990s when table tennis in India was struggling for international recognition. He grew up competing fiercely at the national level and stepped beyond Indian shores. He became the first Indian paddler to train abroad and play for an international club, paving the way for future generations.

Despite losing their pre-quarterfinal matches at the ITTF World Table Tennis Team Championships in Busan on Wednesday, both the Indian men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s teams will qualify for the Olympics for the first time by taking the last world ranking spot.
The Manika Batra-led women's team lost 1-3 to Chinese Taipei in the round of 16 while the men were blown away by South Korea for the second time in the competition, losing 0-3.

The men&rsquo;s team, led by 10-time national champion Sharath Kamal, were blanked 3-0 by a much better team in hosts Korea. The women put up a brave fight but lost 1-3 to the higher-ranked Chinese Taipei, which had the likes of World No.10 Cheng I-Ching and World No.41 Szu-Yu Chen.
The women's team is currently ranked 17th and the men 15th.
"In all likelihood, the men and women have qualified for the Olympics but we will have to wait till March for official announcement," said a Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) official.

It was the first-ever loss for Sun at the team event of the World Championships, summing up the enormity of Ayhika's achievement.
The unexpected win provided a massive boost to Sreeja, who made the day even more memorable for Indian table tennis by blanking world number 2 Wang Yidi in straight games 11-7 11-9 13-11 in the third singles.
However, star player Manika Batra losing both her singles and Ayhika going down in the fifth and deciding singles meant India lost the rubber 2-3. Nonetheless, it was a red letter day for the game in India with Ayhika and Sreeja doing the unthinkable.
"I really feel great to beat Sun Yingsha. Today was my day, she was doing great and I did very well. I was confident and I just told myself that I should enjoy the match," said Ayhika, who used her anti spin rubber brilliantly to down the multiple time Olympic and World Championship medallist. The 26-year-old from Naihati in West Bengal trailed multiple times in the match but found a way to comeback.
She was down 7-10 in the first game but made it 10-10 with a cross court forehand. Sun netted a forehand for 11-10 and the Indian came up with a down-the-line backhand to pocket the first game.
The Chinese took a 6-0 lead in the second game before going on to level the contest.
Ayhika trailed 5-9 in the third game before reeling five straight points to turn the tables on Sun. Such was Sun's state of mind that she opted for a timeout on 8-9.
While Ayhika's main weapon throughout the battle was her backhand down the line but she was also not afraid to attack from the forehand.
A couple of forehand attacks got her to 10-9 before she made room for a down-the-line winner towards Sun's left to take a 2-1 lead in the match. A rare service error from the Chinese gave Ayhika a 7-6 lead in the fourth game before the Indian made it 10-6 for four match points. She converted the very first one with a cross court forehand winner.
Another highlight of the group stage contest was Sreeja's peerless performance against world number 2 Wang Yidi. The 49-th ranked Indian, who uses long pimples like Manika, blanked Wang for the biggest win of her career.
"It was surely the biggest win of my career. I have always wanted to face Wang and finally got to play her today. Ayhika's win gave me a lot of confidence and I was able to put initial pressure on Wang. My backhand worked well and what helped me equally was the consistency of my forehand.
"The win gives me the confidence that I can beat anyone on my day but our main goal here to is to qualify for the quarterfinals (which ensures Olympic qualification)," Sreeja told PTI.
However, India's top-ranked player Manika disappointed losing both her matches to world number four Wang Manyu (3-11 8-11 15-13 7-11) and Sun (3-11 6-11 13-11 9-11).
With the tie locked at 2-2, the 26-year-old Ayhika was unable to recreate the magic of her opening match and went down in straight games to Manyu 9-11 11-13 6-11.&nbsp;

The Indian duo won 3-1 (11-5, 11-6, 5-11, 13-11) in a challenging final. The pair also became the first Indians to win a Contender title this year.
Their achievement has come against the two rising Japanese teenagers who are both ranked among the top-25 in the world in singles.

Sharath Kamal becomes the first Indian to be elected to the Athletes' Commission of the International Table Tennis Federation.

Table Tennis star Achanta Sharath Kamal has been in the news for all the right reasons recently. And now, he has received an international honour no Indian had ever gotten before.
The Indian paddler has become the first player from the country to be elected to the athletes' commission of the global Table Tennis body, the International Table Tennis Federation.
Kamal received the second-highest number of votes in the elections. His 187 votes were only behind Romania's Elizabeta Samara, who bagged 212 votes.&nbsp;
Kamal, who won 3 Gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham earlier this year, will serve on the commission that has a total of 8 athletes(4 men, 4 women) from 2022-2026.
The star Indian paddler said he was humbled by the recognition. Kamal is also the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/sports-news/others-sports/sharath-kamal-to-receive-khel-ratna-award-on-november-30-check-full-list-of-awardees-here-1668439777747">only Indian who's being awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award this year.</a>

In the Men's Team Sprint event in Cycling, India narrowly missed out on bronze medal contention by 0.206 seconds, finishing 5th. In the 4000m team pursuit, the Indian men's team though finished last in the qualification event. The Women's team too failed to qualify for the medal races after finishing seventh in Team Sprint.
In the Men's Individual Triathlon event (Sprint Distance) India's Adarsh Nair (1:00:38) and Vishwanath Yadav (1:02:52) finished 30th and 33rd in the 50-man competition.
India's Men's Table tennis and Women's table Tennis sides defeated lowly Barbados and South Africa in their opening encounters on Day 1. A straight 3-0 win for both teams was no less than a walk in the park.
Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj finished third in his 100m backstroke heat. He clocked an impressive 54.68s time to reach the semifinals of the event. Meanwhile, Kushagra Rawat was eliminated in the Men's 400m Freestyle event after he finished last in Heat 3 while the experienced Sajan Prakash finished eighth in Men's 50m Butterfly and failed to qualify for the semis.
In Lawn Bowls, Taniya Choudhury lost her women's singles match to Scotland's Dee Hoggan 10-21 in the first round. She also lost to Daphne Arthur-Almond 20-21 in a closely fought encounter in round two. In the Men's Triples event India lost 6-23 to New Zealand in the first and 12-19 to Scotland in the second round.

In the Men's Team Sprint event in Cycling, India narrowly missed out on bronze medal contention by 0.206 seconds, finishing 5th. In the 4000m team pursuit, the Indian men's team though finished last in the qualification event. The Women's team too failed to qualify for the medal races after finishing seventh in Team Sprint.
In the Men's Individual Triathlon event (Sprint Distance) India's Adarsh Nair (1:00:38) and Vishwanath Yadav (1:02:52) finished 30th and 33rd in the 50-man competition.
India's Men's Table tennis and Women's table Tennis sides defeated lowly Barbados and South Africa in their opening encounters on Day 1. A straight 3-0 win for both teams was no less than a walk in the park.
Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj finished third in his 100m backstroke heat. He clocked an impressive 54.68s time to reach the semifinals of the event. Meanwhile, Kushagra Rawat was eliminated in the Men's 400m Freestyle event after he finished last in Heat 3 while the experienced Sajan Prakash finished eighth in Men's 50m Butterfly and failed to qualify for the semis.
In Lawn Bowls, Taniya Choudhury lost her women's singles match to Scotland's Dee Hoggan 10-21 in the first round. She also lost to Daphne Arthur-Almond 20-21 in a closely fought encounter in round two. In the Men's Triples event India lost 6-23 to New Zealand in the first and 12-19 to Scotland in the second round.
