The devastating February 6 earthquake and aftershocks that hit southern Turkey have caused damage worth more than $34 billion in the country, the World Bank said on Monday.
The amount is equivalent to four percent of Turkey's GDP in 2021, the Washington-based institution said, adding that the estimate does not account for the costs of reconstruction that were "potentially twice as large," a statement said. World bank also mentions the Global Rapid Post-Disaster Damage Estimation (GRADE) Report, which focuses on the direct physical damages in T&uuml;rkiye. The GRADE report says that 1.25 million have been rendered temporarily homeless.&nbsp;
On February 9, the World Bank announced an initial package of $1.78 billion to help relief and recovery efforts.&nbsp;
&ldquo;This disaster serves as a reminder of T&uuml;rkiye&rsquo;s high risk to earthquakes and of the need to enhance resilience in public and private infrastructure", said Humberto Lopez, World Bank Country Director for Turkey
The estimate also does not take into account the damage caused in northern Syria, also particularly affected by the earthquakes, with a World Bank estimate of the costs there to be released on Tuesday.
The World Bank warned that the continuing aftershocks are likely to increase the total amount of damage caused by the disaster.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Tuesday that more than 35,000 people have died in Turkey as a result of last week&rsquo;s earthquake, making it the deadliest such disaster since the country&rsquo;s founding 100 years ago.
While the death toll is almost certain to rise even further, many survivors left homeless were still struggling to meet basic needs, like finding shelter from the bitter cold.
The Turkish president, who has referred to the quake as &ldquo;the disaster of the century,&rdquo; said more than 13,000 people were still being treated in hospital.
Many in Turkey have blamed faulty construction for the vast devastation, and authorities continued targeting contractors allegedly linked with buildings that collapsed. Turkey has introduced construction codes that meet earthquake-engineering standards, but experts say the codes are rarely enforced.

Over a week after the earthquake battered Syria and Turkey, the opposition-held town of Jindires in northwest Syria struggles as international aid has yet to come in.
Aid agencies and governments stepped up a scramble to send help to parts of Turkey and Syria devastated by an earthquake, but a week after the disaster many complained they still were struggling to meet basic needs, like finding shelter from the bitter cold.
The situation was particularly desperate in Syria, where a 12-year civil war has complicated relief efforts and meant days of wrangling over how to even move aid into the country, let alone distribute it.
Some people who lost their homes said they have received nothing. Mahmoud Haffar, head of the local council in Jinderis, says that locals have been able to scrounge up about 2,500 tents so far, but some 1,500 families still remain without shelter &mdash; as nighttime temperatures fall to around minus 4 degrees Celsius (26 degrees Fahrenheit).
All of the aid has come from local partners says Haffar - none of it from the United Nations.
The United Nations announced a deal with Damascus to deliver U.N. aid through two more border crossings from Turkey to rebel-held areas of northwest Syria &mdash; but the needs remain enormous.
Ibrahim Ibrahim is sifting through the rubble to recover any important documents he could find. He is living in one room with 35 others on the outskirts of town.
But with little heating and proper shelter, people are struggling with the cold temperatures sleeping on the streets or even cramming into a room.
&ldquo;We desperately need tents. We can stand the cold, no problem, we can sleep anywhere no problem but these women, children and injured who we took out from under the rubble who might be bruised etc. I just dropped my kids off (at) the hospital, their whole body is all blue," he says.
Until now, the U.N. has only been allowed to deliver aid to the area through a single border crossing with Turkey, or via government territory, which presents its own logistical and political challenges. The United Nations said Monday that President Bashar Assad of Syria had agreed to open two new crossing points from Turkey to his country&rsquo;s rebel-held northwest.
The crossings at Bab al-Salameh and Al Ra&eacute;e are to be opened for an initial period of three months.
In Syria, the toll in the northwestern rebel-held region has passed 2,200, according to the rescue group known as the White Helmets.
Over 1,400 people have died in government-held areas, according to the Syrian Health Ministry.
The toll is nearly certain to rise as search teams turn up more bodies &mdash; and the window for finding survivors was closing.
In the town of Afrin, 190 families have been housed on the floor of a basketball court.
Families slept on the floor using mattresses used for training and donated by locals.
The families separated from one another using blankets, hanging on columns or sports bars.
Sabah el Khodr says she and her two toddlers have been sick for the last 9 days.
Local officials said the shelter is temporary until new tents are secured. &ldquo;All my kids are sick, come and see. It has been a week from the god forsaken day that happened to us they have been sick. I just came from the hospital. We also have a martyr (lost someone). Our situation is very bad," she said.
Others were lucky and managed to secure a spot in one of the 45 temporary camp encampments created by local NGOs.
Side by side with people living in their trucks and cars, Abdelmajid Al Shawi has been in this camp for the last three days waiting for the world to heed the Syrian people's call, but they have yet to come.
&ldquo;We want our voice to reach the whole world but where is the aid?" he said."

They could lose access as soon as Monday unless they pay Twitter a monthly fee of at least $100 &mdash; prohibitive for many volunteers and nonprofits on shoestring budgets.
&ldquo;That's not just for rescue efforts which unfortunately we're coming to the end of, but for logistics planning too as people go to Twitter to broadcast their needs,&rdquo; said Sedat Kapanoglu, the founder of Eksi Sozluk, Turkey's most popular social platform, who has been advising some of the volunteers in their efforts.
Nonprofits, researchers and others need the tool, known as the API, or Application Developer Interface, to analyze Twitter data because the sheer amount of information makes it impossible for a human to go through by hand.
Kapanoglu says hundreds of &ldquo;good Samaritans&rdquo; have been giving out their own, premium paid API access keys (Twitter already offered a paid version with more features) for use in the rescue efforts.
But he says this isn't &ldquo;sustainable or the right way&rdquo; to do this. It might even be against Twitter's rules.
Monday is the deadline Twitter set for shutting off free access to its API, an added challenge for the thousands of developers in Turkey and beyond who are working around the clock to harness Twitter's unique, open ecosystem for disaster relief.

The IAF aircraft with relief materials, medical aid, and emergency and critical care medicines will first land in Syria and unload materials and then head to Turkey. EAM SJaishankar also took to his Twitter handle to talk about the flight departing from Ghaziabad.

The earthquake that has devastated Turkey and Syria could cause economic losses exceeding $4 billion, ratings agency Fitch said on Thursday.
More than 21,000 people have died so far in the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, and the toll is expected to rise as rescuers comb the rubble for survivors.
"Economic losses are hard to estimate as the situation is evolving, but they appear likely to exceed" $2 billion and could reach $4 billion "or more", Fitch Ratings said.
Insured losses will be much lower, possibly around $1 billion, due to low insurance coverage in the area, it added.

Rescuers in Turkey and war-ravaged Syria searched through the frigid night into Tuesday, hoping to pull more survivors from the rubble after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 4,000 people and toppled thousands of buildings across a wide region.
Authorities feared the death toll from Monday's pre-dawn earthquake and aftershocks would keep climbing as rescuers looked for survivors among tangles of metal and concrete spread across the region beset by Syria's 12-year civil war and refugee crisis.
Hundreds of families remained trapped in the rubble, the White Helmets said in a statement.
Rebel-held northwestern Syria is packed with some 4 million people displaced from other parts of the country by the war.
Many live in buildings that are already wrecked from military bombardments.
The White Helmets described the situation in the enclave as "disastrous."
The opposition-held area, centered on the province of Idlib, has been under siege for years, with frequent Russian and government airstrikes.
The territory depends on a flow of aid from Turkey for everything from food to medical supplies.
U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said 224 buildings in northwestern Syrian were destroyed and at least 325 were damaged, including aid warehouses.
