Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on 24 January 2023 attempted to distance the party from the controversy sparked by Digvijaya Singh who said a day earlier that the Narendra Modi government has not given proof that a surgical strike was conducted against terrorist camps on Pakistan-occupied territory.
"We disagree with Digvijaya Singh's views. The views of the party are above Digvijaya Singh's views," Rahul Gandhi said at a press conference in Jammu.
"The views of the party are generated from a conversation. Digvijaya Singh's views are outlying views. They are not views held by the party. We are absolutely crystal clear - the armed forces do a job and they do the job exceptionally well. They don't need to be providing proof," Gandhi said.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday claimed &ldquo;the DNA of Congress is pro-Pakistan,&rdquo; a day after Congress leader Digvijaya Singh questioned the surgical strikes and accused the Centre of peddling lies.
Further targeting the Congress, Chouhan said they are committing the "sin" of lowering the morale of the armed forces.
Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, Chouhan said, &ldquo;The DNA of Congress is Pakistan-parast (pro-Pakistan). Sometimes they ask for a proof of surgical strike. At times they ask for proof of Lord Ram's existence, the evidence of Ram Setu." Chouhan said Digvijaya Singh while walking along with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi asked for a proof of surgical strike.
&ldquo;They are committing the sin of lowering the morale of the armed forces. This shows they are standing with Pakistan,&rdquo; the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said.
Seeking a reply from Rahul Gandhi on Digvijaya Singh's remarks, Chouhan said, &ldquo;What kind of Bharat Jodo Yatra is this? The Tukde-Tukde gang is marching with you. The morale of the armed forces is being lowered. Rahul Gandhi is also raising questions on the armed forces. This is not patriotism.&rdquo;
Chouhan claimed Madhya Pradesh was the "stronghold" of the banned outfit Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) when Digvijaya Singh was the state's chief minister.
Addressing a public meeting during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, former Madhya Pradesh CM Digvijaya Singh questioned the surgical strikes.
The Rajya Sabha member also alleged that the Centre did not agree to the Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) request of flying its personnel from Srinagar to Delhi and 40 soldiers sacrificed their lives in Pulwama in 2019 in a terror attack.
As his comments stoked a major political row, the Congress distanced itself from them, saying they are "his own" and do not reflect the party's position.

Amid an ongoing row over Congress leader Digvijaya Singh questioning the authenticity of the 2019 surgical strikes, agitated party leader Jairam Ramesh lashed out at the media on Tuesday, saying all that needed to be said have already been done, and the questions should now be directed at the Prime Minister.
A day after Mr Singh triggered a controversy and the Congress distanced itself from his remarks, Mr Ramesh told the media during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir that all queries related to the surgical strike uproar have been answered by his party and the media needs to aim its questions at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mr Singh, trying to put an end to the row, also said, "I have got the greatest regard for the Defence forces", as the leaders marched on along with other padayatris.

The saffron party in response had said that Congress had insulted the armed forces in their blinded "hate" for Prime Minister Narendra Modi

"They talk of surgical strikes. They claim to have killed so many people but no proof is given. They are ruling by peddling a bundle of lies," the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister, who has often courted controversy with his comments, said.
The BJP launched a sharp attack on the Congress, saying that such comments show that the Rahul Gandhi-led foot march across the country is Bharat Jodo Yatra only in name while he and his party colleagues are working to "break" the country. It is essentially "Bharat todo yatra", BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said.
He said, "India will not tolerate if they speak against armed forces. Rahul Gandhi and the Congress hate PM Modi but it seems they have been blinded by the hate to an extent that their dedication to the country has withered away." He said Congress leaders had raised questions about the surgical strikes soon after the Indian Air Force said it hit terror camps in Balakot in Pakistan in retaliation to the Pulwama terror attack. "Gandhi and the Congress do not have trust in our brave armed forces. They repeatedly raise questions and insult the citizens of India and our armed forces," Bhatia claimed.
He added that Congress leaders had tried to deflect attention from Pakistan after the terror attack as well. Randeep Singh Surjewala had then blamed "home-grown terrorism", he claimed, alleging that the opposition party tried to give a clean chit to Pakistan.
Pakistan is in a lot of pain when our armed forces strike terrorists, while in India it is the Congress which is in anguish, he said.
With the Pulwama terror attack and surgical strikes taking place in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the issues had captured popular imagination as the BJP retained power at the Centre with a bigger mandate than 2014 by winning over 300 seats out of 543.
"Nothing is bigger than people's blessings in democracy. In the 2019 polls, it became clear that people stand with the BJP and the armed forces. While those who raised questions are facing existential crisis," Bhatia said.

Pakistan armed forces' media wing Director General Asif Ghafoor asked Shah to not draw comparisons between Pakistan's cricket defeat to India and the two neighbours' border skirmishes. Ghafoor, through his personal account, responded to Shah, saying two things with different denominators can't be compared.
