The demolition of the structures leaves behind an estimated 35,000 cubic metres or 55,000 tonnes to 80,000 tonnes of debris which chiefly includes concrete rubble, steel and iron bars and would take another three months to be properly disposed of.
The Supreme Court had on August 31, 2021 ordered the demolition of the towers for violation of building norms in "collusion with district officials, holding that illegal construction has to be dealt with strictly to ensure compliance with the rule of law".
The New Okhla Industrial Development Authority (NOIDA), also called the Noida Authority, had received a rap on its knuckles as the top court pointed out multiple incidents of collusion of its officials with Supertech Ltd in the Emerald Court project and violations of norms by the realty major in construction of the twin towers.
"The case has revealed a nefarious complicity of the planning authority in the violation by the developer of the provisions of law," the Supreme Court had observed.
The local Noida Authority, which had approved the building maps in the first place, oversaw the mega demolition exercise which had been in planning for almost a year now.
Mumbai-based Edifice Engineering was tasked with the job and it had hired South Africa's Jet Demolitions for its expertise. The Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) was appointed by the Supreme Court as technical expert for the project.
The top court ordered that Supertech would bear the cost of the demolition as it noted that the construction of twin towers, which was not part of the original plan for Emerald Court, directly affected the quality of life of its residents.
The only other precedence of high-rise structures in India being demolished are four housing complexes in the Maradu municipality area of Kochi, Kerala, in January 2020 in compliance with orders of the Supreme Court, which had held the 18-20 storey buildings to be illegal as they had been built in violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone norms.
Edifice and Jet Demolitions had collaborated for the Maradu complexes demolition, too. Jet Demolitions had individually successfully executed the implosion of the 108-metre-tall Bank of Lisbon building in Johannesburg, South Africa, in November 2019.

The Emerald Court, approved by Noida authorities in 2005, was supposed to be a residential complex with 14 towers of 9 floors each buy by 2012 it had become a project of 15 buildings with11 storey each and two towers rising to 40 floors above ground.
Residents of Emerald Court moved the Allahabad High Court in 2012 claiming that the construction of the 2 towers violated various laws. 
First, the area where the two towers, Apex and Ceyane, were coming up was sold to them as a green space but now the construction of the 40-storeyed building was blocking their view, fresh air and sunlight. 
They also claimed that Supertech had not maintained the minimum distance required between two buildings and that the plans for the residential complex were changed without their approval which is required as per law. 
Allahabad High Court in 2014 ordered demolition of the towers but it Supertech approached the Supreme Court. The top court then ordered status and finally in August 2021 ordered the demolition. 
Over 3,700 kg explosives will be used to bring down the structures in pursuance of a Supreme Court order that found their construction within the Emerald Court society premises in violation of norms.
Around 5,000 residents of Emerald Court and adjoining ATS Village societies in Sector 93A have to vacate their premises by 7 am on Sunday while also removing nearly 3,000 vehicles and taking away 150-200 pets, including cats and dogs, with them for the day.
       The closest buildings next to twin towers are Aster 2 and Aster 3 of Emerald Court society which are just nine metres away. The demolition would be done in a manner so as not to cause any structural damages to other buildings, the officials said.
       While nearby Noida-Greater Noida Expressway will be closed from 2.15 pm to 2.45 pm, the city will remain no fly zone for drones. The air space in one nautical mile radius above the blast will also remain briefly unavailable for flights during demolition time, according to Noida Authority.           All work related to placement of explosives and connecting them is already complete. The only work remaining is interconnecting the twin towers and placing a 100-metre-long cable from the structures to the exploder, from where the button would be pressed on Sunday, project officials said.
"Once last minute checks are done and all teams get down from the buildings, the two buildings Apex and Ceyane, have to be inter-connected. After that a 100-metre-long cable would be run from the towers to the exploder to demolish the buildings," Edifice Engineering's project manager Mayur Mehta said.
"Once we get the clearance from the police department that the exclusion zone is 100 per cent clear, then at 2.30 pm on Sunday we will press the button," he said.
       Mehta said only six people, including three foreign experts, Indian blaster Chetan Dutta, a police officer and himself, will remain within the exclusion zone to push the button for the blast.  Asked how confident he was regarding safe demolition, Mehta told PTI: "100 per cent. I don't have any other word. We are 100 per cent confident." Mehta's Mumbai-based Edifice Engineering has been tasked with safely pulling down the structures. Edifice has roped in South African experts Jet Demolitions for the project. The whole exercise is being overseen by the local Noida Authority.
Mehta has assured residents of adjoining societies that there will be no damage to their homes except for chances of "cosmetic cracks" on outer paint and plasters of some structures.
On how many options they had for demolition of the twin towers, Mehta said there are basically three techniques to safely raze down any structure of such a scale - diamond cutter, use of robots and implosion.
"The technique is chosen on the basis of three parameters - cost, time and safety," he said.
He said the 'diamond cutter' would have taken over two years of time to completely demolish the twin towers safely, and its cost would have been five times of the implosion method.
On using robotics, he said this technique would have caused a lot of noise over a period of 1.5 years to two years and disturbed the residents of nearby Emerald Court and ATS Village.
"Its cost would have been less than the diamond cutter technique but more than implosion," he said.
The Edifice boss said since the Supreme Court had also ordered that this project should be done in the shortest possible time and with no disturbance to neighbouring residents, the implosion technique became the choice for the project.
Diversions would be placed on roads leading to the twin towers in Noida Sector 93A from Sunday morning while the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, barely 200 metres from the demolition site, would be closed for vehicular movement from 2 pm to 3 pm, DCP (Traffic) Ganesh Saha said.
Google maps will have updated feeds for diversions and real-time traffic situations on Sunday, Saha said, adding that arrangements have been made for movement of emergency vehicles.
DCP (Central Noida) Rajesh S said around 400 police personnel would be deployed for law and order duty, while PAC and NDRF personnel would also be on the ground for any contingencies.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Sunil Sharma said the health department would station six ambulances at the site equipped with officials and medicines. Beds have been reserved at the district hospital and private medical facilities Yatharth, Felix and Jaypee too.
The demolition of the twin towers will be carried out through the waterfall implosion technique which would bring them down within a few seconds literally like a house of cards. The eye-popping event would leave behind a whopping 55,000 tonnes of debris, even as some estimates put the figure at 80,000 tonnes. The debris would take an estimated three months to be cleared and disposed of.
Maheshwari said all arrangements are being made to clear the dust from the area in the aftermath of the demolition.
     Besides sanitation workers, mechanical sweeping machines, anti-smog guns, water sprinklers would be placed at the site, she said.
Residents of Emerald Court and ATS Village that PTI spoke to said they were anxious over the demolition, even as they expressed relief over the illegal structures finally set to go away after legal battles of more than a decade.

The demolition of Supertech Twin Tower at '2:30 pm sharp' on Sunday afternoon will bring along a range of tasks from evacuation to execution. As part of the 7 am deadline evacuation plan, the police jotted down a step-by-step guide for moving out the residents of ATS village and Supertech Emerald. About 4000 people from the societies are to be shifted including their vehicles. The security plan has been planned in a way that no one is affected.
Among the people present during the demolition, only Edifice officials, those involved in the explosion and 1 police representative will be present near the Supertech Twin Towers.
Post evacuation of residents, only limited guards will be present to look into the premises' safety. As soon as the razing process begins at 2:30 pm, even th guards will be escorted out of the exclusion zone which which will have about 400 personnel deployed. For safety purpose, th police has banned use of drones, violation of which will amount to a penal offence.
The demolition exercise ,which is expected to last an hour or more, will prompt  traffic restrictions too. Noida Expressway will be closed during the exerice. The shut down can also extend beyond the stipulated time, provided the conditions. As for the roads, there will be diversions and closures in the day. 
To avoid any mishap or gravity the district adminsitration has also charted a contingency plan. There are designated hospitals for health emergencies, if any. Likewise helpline numbers, helpdesks have been arranged to avoid any untoward incident.

At the time of the demolition, only Edifice officials, the company overseeing the demolition, workers involved in explosion and 1 police representative will be present near the Supertech twin towers. Post evacuation of residents, only limited guards will be posted to look at the premises' safety.

When the Supreme Court ordered the demolition of Supertech's twin towers in Noida in August last year, Chetan Dutta, a 49-year-old blaster, "prayed" for the opportunity to press the button to bring down the nearly 100-metre-tall structures.
And, a year later on August 28, Dutta will press the button to commence the demolition. "It's like a dream come true," says Dutta, who hails from Hisar in Haryana.
He was approached by Edifice Engineering, which has been tasked with demolishing the towers, to act as a blaster.
"When the Supreme Court's decision came, someone forwarded a message (about it) on WhatsApp and I prayed to God that I should be given an opportunity to demolish the building. I did not expect to be chosen though...months later, in July, Edifice approached me and my firm for the loading of explosives," said Dutta, who runs a firm that is involved in building demolition.
"In the last 10 days, we have very carefully loaded the explosives. We are ready now...," he added.
Taller than Delhi's iconic Qutub Minar, the nearly 100-metre-high Apex and Ceyane towers in Noida's Sector 93A are set to be demolished at 2.30 pm on August 28.

It is the first residential tower for which Dutta is acting as a blaster. "I have been in this line of business since 2002. I have conducted the demolition of thermal power plants, mines and other structures. But this is the first residential building for which I am acting as a blaster," he said.
Dutta said he is confident that the demolition will be carried out in a successful and safe manner. "We have done plenty of preparations to carry out the operation. All minute details and problems have been taken care of." More than 3,700 kg of explosives are being used to implode the twin towers. The major task is to ensure the safety of people living in the vicinity and that no nearby buildings suffer damage.
"So much research was carried out. Following the loading of explosives, checks were done thrice. Flying rubble is a major concern...and to prevent that, the blasting area has been covered with four layers of iron mesh and two layers of blanket. No rubble will fly past, but dust may," he said.
Dutta explains that he will be stationed about 50-70 metres away from the building while pressing the button.
"We'll be almost 50-70m away from the building, there will be no danger and we are very much sure that the building will collapse in a proper way...," he added.
Explaining the demolition process, Dutta said: "It's a simple process. We generate current from the dynamo and then press the button which will ignite the detonators in all shock tubes within 9 seconds." The Apex and Ceyane towers in Noida's Sector 93A will be demolished in pursuance of a Supreme Court order that found that structures had come up in Supertech's Emerald Court society premises in violation of norms.
Over 5,000 residents of Emerald Court and ATS Village -- the two closest societies to the twin towers -- will be evacuated by 7 am on Sunday. Around 2,700 vehicles belonging to them will also be removed from the premises and the residents will take away around 150-200 of their pets, too.
An exclusion zone will be created at a radius of up to 500 metres around the twin towers where no human or animal will be allowed, except for a team of Indian and foreign blasters engaged in the demolition of the nearly 100-metre-tall structures.
Earlier, demolition firm Edifice Engineering, experts of Central Building Research Institute and the Noida Authority officials had expressed confidence that the structures will be demolished safely and said they were satisfied with the arrangements made for controlling debris splinters.

It is the first residential tower for which Dutta is acting as a blaster. "I have been in this line of business since 2002. I have conducted the demolition of thermal power plants, mines and other structures. But this is the first residential building for which I am acting as a blaster," he said.
Dutta said he is confident that the demolition will be carried out in a successful and safe manner. "We have done plenty of preparations to carry out the operation. All minute details and problems have been taken care of." More than 3,700 kg of explosives are being used to implode the twin towers. The major task is to ensure the safety of people living in the vicinity and that no nearby buildings suffer damage.

"So much research was carried out. Following the loading of explosives, checks were done thrice. Flying rubble is a major concern...and to prevent that, the blasting area has been covered with four layers of iron mesh and two layers of blanket. No rubble will fly past, but dust may," he said.
Dutta explains that he will be stationed about 50-70 metres away from the building while pressing the button.
"We'll be almost 50-70m away from the building, there will be no danger and we are very much sure that the building will collapse in a proper way...," he added.
Explaining the demolition process, Dutta said: "It's a simple process. We generate current from the dynamo and then press the button which will ignite the detonators in all shock tubes within 9 seconds." The Apex and Ceyane towers in Noida's Sector 93A will be demolished in pursuance of a Supreme Court order that found that structures had come up in Supertech's Emerald Court society premises in violation of norms.
Over 5,000 residents of Emerald Court and ATS Village -- the two closest societies to the twin towers -- will be evacuated by 7 am on Sunday. Around 2,700 vehicles belonging to them will also be removed from the premises and the residents will take away around 150-200 of their pets, too.
An exclusion zone will be created at a radius of up to 500 metres around the twin towers where no human or animal will be allowed, except for a team of Indian and foreign blasters engaged in the demolition of the nearly 100-metre-tall structures.
Earlier, demolition firm Edifice Engineering, experts of Central Building Research Institute and the Noida Authority officials had expressed confidence that the structures will be demolished safely and said they were satisfied with the arrangements made for controlling debris splinters.

"There are approximately 650 flats in Emerald Court and 450 flats in ATS Village. Both societies have a combined number of residents over 5,000 who will be required to move out as per schedule on August 28," a Noida Authority official said.
"As for the removal of vehicles, several residents have more than one vehicle. There are around 1,200 vehicles in Emerald Court and 1,500 vehicles in ATS Village that will have to be moved outside. The Noida Authority will provide space for them in the multilevel parking facility at Botanical Garden metro station," the official said.
The multi-level parking at Botanical Garden Metro station can easily accommodate more than 5,000 vehicles at a time, according to the official.
Entry of people, vehicles and animals will be restricted in the close proximity area -- known as exclusion zone -- of the twin towers in Sector 93A, the plan stated.
The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, which is close to the twin towers, will remain shut for vehicular movement from 2.15 pm to 2.45 pm on August 28, it showed.
Fire tenders, ambulances, etc, required for emergency services, shall be parked on the road constructed behind the park in front of the twin towers, it added.

The charging process &ndash; placing of explosives &ndash; was completed on Monday evening and the next procedure, known as trunking, will start on Tuesday, they said.
A total of 40 people, including blasters and trained workers, had started charging the Ceyane (29 storeys) and Apex (32 storeys) towers together on August 13, according to an official of Edifice Engineering, the firm hired to demolish the twin towers.
Later, the team focused on Ceyane alone and completed its charging by August 17 and then moved to Apex, where the work was completed on Monday, the official said.
&ldquo;We had made a schedule to complete the charging process by August 26. We had kept a buffer period for ourselves in order to make sure that the work gets completed in any case well before the scheduled demolition at 2.30 pm on August 28,&rdquo; the Edifice official said.
"Now that the charging is complete, the next work is to connect all explosives together and then recheck these 20,000 connections in both the towers. After that is done, a main connection with the detonator will be made on the day of demolition only," the official added.
Of the 40 workers present at site for charging, only 10 would remain on August 28.

The Supreme Court on Friday fixed August 28 deadline for demolition of Supertech's twin 40-storey towers in Uttar Pradesh's Noida. It had earlier set August 21 as the date of demolition of the buildings, which have been held illegal for violation of norms.
The order has been pronounced in response to a plea filed by by Interim Resolution Professional (IRP) seeking an extension of the timeline of May 22, 2022 by three months till August 28 after the agency appointed for demolition, Edifice Engineering sought time on grounds of slight change in design after carrying out test blasts
A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and AS Bopanna granted a "bandwidth" of one week from August 29 to September 4 to the agencies engaged in the demolishing exercise of the twin towers on grounds that there may be some marginal delay in razing the huge buildings due to technical and weather conditions.
The top court also asked agencies concerned, including the management of Supertech, to cooperate with the agencies engaged in the demolition exercise.
On August 31 last year, the top court had ordered the demolition of the towers under construction within three months for violation of building norms in "collusion” with NOIDA officials, holding that illegal construction has to be dealt with strictly to ensure compliance of the rule of law.
