Who Are The 2020 Nobel Prize Winners? | Summachar

In this video, we will look at laureates bestowed with the honour of the Nobel Prize this year for being recognized for their positive contributions to the society.
Dr. Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovery of the Hepatitis C virus. The committee said that they had &ldquo;made possible blood tests and new medicines that have saved lives.&rdquo;
Hepatitis C is a blood-borne pathogen affecting 71 million people worldwide and it can cause severe liver inflammation, or hepatitis. It is typically transmitted through shared or reused needles and syringes, infected blood transfusions and sexual practices that lead to blood exposure.
Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez received 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics for improving the understanding of the universe, including work on Black Holes.
Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna received 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for development of CRISPR-Cas9, a method for genome editing, that can help to cure sickle cell disease and congenital blindness.
CRISPR uses a family of genomes of prokaryotic organisms like bacteria, to detect and destroy similar bacteria during subsequent infections. Thus it can edit DNA in human cells via a petri dish.
Poet and Essayist, Louise Gl&uuml;ck received the Nobel Prize in Literature 2020 for &ldquo;her unmistakable poetic voice&rdquo;. She has already won the Pulitzer prize and the National Book Award, for tackling themes like childhood and family life, often reworking Greek and Roman myths.
The World Food Programme has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2020, for its impressive efforts to combat food crisis in the Covid-19 pandemic. By honouring this program, the Nobel Committee has also sent a message to governments around the world, to not cut financial contributions to international humanitarian groups.
Paul R. Milgrom and Robert B. Wilson have been awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, for 2020, for inventing new auction formats for the sale of goods and services and improving the existing auction theory.
Did you know? John Nash is the only person to be awarded both the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and the Abel Prize. He was a mathematician who made fundamental contributions to Game Theory, and Differential Geometry. His theories are widely used in Economics.

Transgender Rights In India & The World

On 26th September, 2020, in the address made to the United Nations General Assembly, Indian PM Narendra Modi affirmed India&rsquo;s comittment to Transgender rights.
 He stated that &ldquo;rights of Transgenders are also being secured through necessary Legal reforms&rdquo; in India. In doing so, he became one of the few leaders to acknowledge Transgender rights on international forums.
 According to the Human Rights Watch, transgender is the identity of people whose gender assigned at birth does not conform to their lived gender&rdquo;&nbsp;
 Even today transgenders face discrimination across the globe. For instance, US earlier allowed Transgender people in the Army before President Trump reversed the decision in 2017. He claimed that they add &ldquo;tremendous medical costs and disruption&rdquo;
 Russia criminalized educating &ldquo;minors&rdquo; about Transgender in 2013, and banned Transgender people from driving in 2015.
 As of 2019, 16 countries including Japan and Finland require sterilisation for transgender people before granting them official recognition
 Even WHO categorized Transgender health issues under &ldquo;mental and behavioural disorders&rdquo; until 2019.

India’s Own Microprocessor 'Moushik' Is Here | Summachar

Researchers at IIT Madras have developed an indegenious microprocessor that may soon become an integral part of Smart Cities of Digital India.
Moushik is a system on a chip conceptualised and developed by the Reconfigurable Intelligent Systems Engineering group at IIT Madras. It is a part of the SHAKTI project - the free and open source silicon project of IIT Madras. The IITM team designed the processor and Motherboard, whereas the foundry-specific backend design and fabrication was done at ISRO&rsquo;s semiconductor labs in Chandigarh. Its motherboard, called &ldquo;Ardonyx 1.0&rdquo;, was made in Bengaluru, making this SoC truly a Made in India product.
Now what exactly is a System on Chip? It is a chip that integrates most components of a computer like CPU, GPU, memory, input/output ports and secondary storage, in a single microchip of the size of a coin. It is generally used in appliances like mobile phones, wearable devices, and streaming sticks.
Moushik chip was made using 180-nanometer technology. It has 103 functional Input Output Ports, that are used by software to communicate with other hardware components. Its other notable features are: 1.8V Core Voltage, 3.3V IO Voltage, and a Gate Count of 647k. Moreover, its 100Mhz speed can cater to various small devices and home appliances.
The chip can be used in Credit cards, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), surveillance cameras, amongst other IoT Devices. The most impressive thing about this chip is that if there is an order for one million units, its cost can be reduced to even $1 per chip. India already has a demand for billions of such chips.
According to the developers, the Moushik chip and the Shakti group of processors are at par with the Industry standard. Indigenous brands and startups can use them in their products and minimize the usage of Imported system. It will also help in strategic sectors like defense, nuclear power installations and Government Agencies.

NGOs in India (2/2) - Impact in Numbers | Summachar 

With the FCRA amendments bill being passed recently, NGOs in India have come under the spotlight again. Let's understand more about NGOs and their impact in India.
Some 2015 stats on NGOs outline why NGOs are important from a social as well as political lens. As per these stats there were around 3 million NGOs in India. This was double the number of schools and 250 times the number of govt hospitals in the country at that time! India had 1 NGO per 400 citizens as compared to 1 policeman per 709 citizens.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
NGOs or non-governmental organisations work independently without any government intervention. In India, the term NGO is used as an umbrella term for different types of not-for-profit organizations or NPOs.
NPOs are formed as legal entities working for welfare but no working member shares its profit or loss. NGOs generally work towards societal causes, such as human rights, women's welfare, education and so on, whereas NPOs work in specific fields like promoting arts, science, research, etc. Not all NPOs are charitable organizations, and some may also be formed as a part of tax planning.
