Eight districts of Maharashtra's Marathwada region registered 520 farmer suicides between January and June (up to June 26) 2025, up 20 per cent from 430 such cases reported in the same period last year, according to a state revenue department report.
Beed district, where 126 farmers committed suicide in the first half of the current calendar year, topped the list in the central Maharashtra region.
Eight districts of Marathwada had witnessed 430 farmer suicides between January and June 2024. During the same period in 2025 (up to June 26) 520 agriculturists killed themselves in the region, said the report.
This represented a nearly 20 per cent rise in farmer suicides.
During the January-June 2024 period also, Beed remained on top among districts with 101 farmer suicide cases, said the report.
This year, ex-gratia payment has been given to the affected families in 264 out of 313 qualified cases, while 146 cases are under scrutiny. Also, 61 cases were found ineligible for compensation, a three-fold rise from 20 in January-June last year, it added.
District-wise farmer suicide cases from January-June 2025 were: Beed (126), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (92), Nanded (74), Parbhani (64), Dharashiv (63), Latur (38), Jalna (32) and Hingoli (31).

Krishendu Das, a class 7 student, allegedly lifted a packet of chips from a shop at Gosaiber bazar in the Panskura area on Thursday evening after he failed to find the shopkeeper Subhankar Dikshit. He had called out "uncle I will buy chips" repeatedly without any response and finally left the shop allegedly with one packet of chips, the officer said quoting his grief-stricken mother.
He was allegedly chased by Dikshit who came back to the shop soon afterwards, slapped and asked to do sit-ups in full public view, the officer said quoting a complaint by the family.
The officer said a probe is underway Das' mother was summoned to the spot and she also scolded him and slapped him while the boy claimed he picked up the junk food packet lying in a heap before the shop and would have come to pay later.
He even offered to pay immediately apologising for lifting the packet without the consent of the shopowner but the shopowner accused him of lying.
A sulking Krishnendu then returned to his house with his mother, bolted the door of his room from inside and did not open the door.
After some time his mother along with neighbours broke open the door and found him frothing from the mouth with a half-empty pesticide bottle lying on his side, the officer said, adding that a note purportedly scribbled by him in Bengali was found lying on the side.
"Maa I am not a thief. I did not steal. Uncle (shopkeeper) was not around as I waited. While returning I spotted a kurkure packet lying on the road and picked it up. I love Kurkure," said the note.
Krishnendu further said, "These are my final words before leaving. Please excuse me for this act(consuming pesticide)".
He was taken to Tamluk Hospital and admitted to ICU but died soon afterwards.
The shopowner, also a civic volunteer associated with Bengal Police to assist in traffic management, initially claimed he did not assault the child.
But after the incident became known he could not be traced as a crowd assembled before his closed shop.

The MBBS doctor, A Ravi Kumar, was found hanging from the ceiling of his room at his rented apartment in Kabir Nagar in the Chhattisgarh capital on Saturday afternoon, a police official said.
The incident came to light when Kumar's classmate, who is also his room partner, came to the apartment and found it locked from inside. When his repeated knocks on the door went unanswered, his classmate got worried and alerted other students and also police, he said.
Kumar hailed from Hyderabad and joined AIIMS Raipur in 2023 after completing his MBBS. He was pursuing MD in forensic science, according to the police official.
Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and further investigation was underway, he said, adding the body was handed over to his relatives after post-mortem examination.
A public relations officer (PRO) at AIIMS Raipur informed Kumar had returned from a vacation just last month.
Asked about work pressure at the institute, the PRO said he has not seen the suicide note and police were investigating the matter.

The student, a native of Chapra in Bihar, was preparing for NEET-UG at a coaching institute here for around a year and living in a hostel in the Landmark City area, Circle Inspector, Kunhadi police station, Arvind Bhardwaj said.
Before taking the extreme step, the student sent a WhatsApp message to his sister, who then called the hostel caretaker and asked him to check her brother's room, Bharadwaj said.
The caretaker knocked on the door of the teenager's room but did not receive any response. He then informed police, who rushed to the spot and broke open the door. The student was found hanging inside the room, the circle inspector said.
Though the ceiling fan in the hostel room was equipped with an anti-suicide device, the student managed to tie the rope that he used to hang himself to an iron hook above the device, he added.
A suicide note was recovered from the room. In the note, the student said that neither his family nor NEET was to be blamed for his decision. He, however, did not disclose the reason, Bhardwaj said.
He said the student also requested that his name, family details or photograph not be shared with the media, he said.
The reason behind the student's extreme step is yet to be ascertained, he added.
Bhardwaj said the body has been kept at the MBS Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, which will be conducted after his family members reach here.
This is the 11th suicide by a student in Kota, the country's coaching hub, this year. The number stood at 17 last year.

Additional Superintendent of Police (North) Mukesh Chandra Mishra said, "The post-mortem report clearly indicates death by strangulation, though the closed room suggested a suicide. We are investigating all possible angles and have taken both named accused -- Rekha and her lover Pintu (25) -- into custody." The couple was sent to jail after a medical examination on Friday.
Singh was working as a sanitation worker posted on contract with the Fatehganj Paschimi Nagar Panchayat in Bareilly.
Mishra said, "Suspecting poisoning, we have also preserved the victim's viscera for forensic testing. During questioning, Rekha initially avoided direct answers but later confessed to mixing poison in her husband's food. However, she denied strangling him or hanging the body, claiming her husband might have locked the room and taken his own life." Police said they are awaiting the viscera report to confirm the poisoning.
Meanwhile, a case of murder has been registered against Rekha and Pintu at the Fatehganj Paschimi police station based on a complaint filed by the victim's brother, Ashok.
In his complaint, Ashok alleged that his brother had learned about his wife's affair with Pintu. Following this, they conspired to kill his brother.
"They first gave him poison. When he became unconscious, they strangled him with a rope and then used the same rope to hang his body from the ceiling to make it look like suicide," the FIR stated.
The investigation is ongoing, and further action will depend on the forensic findings and statement corroboration, police said.

A placard reading "Justice is due" was found in the room where he ended his life. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Before taking the drastic step, he recorded an over 80-minute video on Rumble, explaining the circumstances under which he had decided to die by suicide. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; In the video, which has now gone viral on social media platforms, Subhash can be heard saying, "I feel that I should kill myself because the money I earn is making my enemies stronger. That same money will be used to destroy me, and this cycle will keep going. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; "With the money from my taxes, this court and police system will harass me, my family, and other good people. So, the supply of value should be finished." &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; He demanded that, after his death, his wife and her family should not be allowed near his body. All the allegations are being looked into, and we are investigating the matter," a senior police officer said. In a round of sad news coming from the Kannada film industry, Kannada film producer and businessman Soundarya Jagadish died following an alleged suicide attempt. Police and close sources informed PTI that the producer allegedly attempted suicide by hanging in his residence at Mahalakshmi Layout in Bengaluru. He was reportedly depressed after his mother-in-law passed away.

Jagadish's friend Shreyas told reporters, according to PTI that the producer passed away after a suicide attempt. 'Jagadish has died following a suicide attempt. We brought him to the hospital, where he was declared dead. Further procedures are underway to know what was the reason. There were no health issues; we are unable to tell you the reason suddenly,' he said.&nbsp;
His friend rubbished reports of cardiac arrest and said, 'On getting to know, he was immediately rushed to the hospital this morning...he had attempted suicide by hanging.'
Indian Express reported DCP (North) Saidulu Adavath saying that Jagadish&rsquo;s wife had filed a complaint. 'We are investigating the case from all angles. Recently, his mother-in-law passed away and he was depressed because he was attached to her. He was also under medication for stress,' he told the media.
Along with being a film producer, Jagadish also owned a pub in Bangalore, which was recently embroiled in a controversy.&nbsp;
Jagadish has produced several films including Snehitaru, Appu and Pappu, Mast Maja Maadi, and Ramleela.

A couple died by suicide in this south Kerala district allegedly depressed because their college-going daughter eloped with her lover.
The deceased were identified as Unnikrishna Pillai and his wife Bindhu, who belong to Pavumba here.
Quoting some of their relatives, police said the couple were mentally down over their daughter's relationship and the fact that she had eloped without considering their request to give it up.
They consumed an overdose of some pills on Saturday night.
While Bindhu died last night, Pillai's death was confirmed early Sunday morning, police added.

The body of the 27-year-old judge, identified as Jyotsna Rai, was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside her home.
According to media reports, the 27-year-old judge hailed from Mau and was serving in Badaun for a year.
A suicide note, along with other documents, was recovered from her room.
Senior Superintendent of Police of Budaun Alok Priyadarshi said that prima facie it seems to be a case of mental stress, India Today report said.&nbsp;

Uttar Pradesh: 3 brothers attempt suicide; 2 dead, third battling for life

As per information gathered from the family members and some villagers, police said it appears that the brothers were very close to each other.

Three brothers allegedly attempted suicide on Thursday by hanging within a span of 24 hours resulting in the death of two, while the third is fighting for his life in a hospital, police said.
According to police, one Pan Singh (19) of the Aurangabad village under the Dhanari police station area allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a tree. He took the extreme step after a heated argument with his father.
The family members recovered the body and brought it home. The elder brother Brajesh (21), apparently hurt by the incident, attempted suicide by hanging himself in a room. The family members and other villagers intervened and took him to a hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile the eldest brother Munish (25), who works in Chandigarh, returned home after hearing the news. "Munish committed suicide by hanging from a tree near the village on Friday morning, shortly after returning from Chandigarh," said Superintendent of Police (SP) of Sambhal Kuldeep Singh Gunawat.
"The family members had cremated the bodies of both the brothers. We came to know about the incident from some villagers," added the officer who, along with senior officials, reached the village and met with the grieving family.
"Though no formal police complaint has been lodged regarding the matter, we have submitted a report to the SDM regarding the incident," added the officer.
When asked about the reason for the suicides, the SP said, "As per information gathered from the family members and some villagers it appears that the brothers were very close to each other. The youngest brother had some argument with the father regarding leaving the village in search of work. Besides this, no other reason has come to the fore," said the SP.&nbsp;

A 20-year-old woman undergoing Agniveer training in the Indian Navy allegedly died by suicide by hanging herself in her hostel room at INS Hamla in Mumbai, police said on Tuesday.
The woman, hailing from Kerala, was undergoing training at the INS Hamla in the Malwani area in the western suburb of Malad, an official said.
She allegedly hung herself in her hostel room on Monday morning, he said.
While no suicide note was recovered from the spot, it appears the woman took the extreme step due to personal reasons, the official said.
The woman had been training at the facility for the last 15 days after completing her basic training, he said.
The police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and further investigation is underway, the official added.
Agniveers are soldiers recruited by the armed forces under the Agnipath scheme, which was introduced in 2022.

A 38-year-old man ended his life claiming that he was being blackmailed with a rape accusation, and livestreamed his extreme act on Facebook, police said.
Manish alias Raj Yadav, a resident of the Kalamna area of Nagpur, ended his life by jumping into the Kanhan river on Sunday, said an official.
According to police, he was in a relationship with a 19-year-old girl from his locality.
The girl went missing from her home on September 6 and her family alleged that Manish was responsible for it, said the police official.
On Sunday, Manish streamed a live video on Facebook from the riverbank where he said that the girl's family had threatened to implicate him in a fabricated rape case if he did not pay them Rs 5 lakh, and they had similarly blackmailed someone else in Uttar Pradesh before targeting him.
Facing unbearable pressure, he was ending his life, he said.
Kalamna police has detained the girl and her family members for questioning and an investigation is underway, the official said.&nbsp;

A 35-year-old man here allegedly committed suicide, recording and broadcasting the act through Instagram Live from a hotel room, police said on Tuesday.
The wife of the deceased, Vikram, has accused a woman of blackmailing him and forcing her husband to commit suicide.
According to the complaint filed by Neeru, the wife, a native of Hisar, on Monday, her husband Vikram had gone to a hotel in Sector 38 at the call of a female friend of his to celebrate her birthday.
"At the hotel, my husband was forced to commit suicide and even record it on Instagram Live. She was constantly blackmailing Vikram and demanding money from him. She had some objectionable videos of both of them which she threatened to make upload online.
"She tortured Vikram twice and forced him to kill himself," Neeru said in her complaint, according to police.
The couple lives with its two children in the Rajendra Park area, she said.
Following her complaint, an FIR was registered against the female friend under section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC at Sadar Police Station on Monday, said police.
"An FIR has been registered against Anshi, a native of Himachal Pradesh, as per the complaint. We are verifying the facts and action will be taken as per the law," said Inspector Subhash Chand, SHO, Sadar Police Station.&nbsp;
