A 25-year-old Sudanese student offering morning prayers was stabbed to death and his friend grievously injured by six assailants near a private university here on Thursday, police said.
Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Gauarv Toora said all the accused have been arrested from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.
The deceased was identified as Mohammed Wada Bala Yousif Ahmed, who was residing at a paying guest accommodation in Maheru Colony here. The injured, Ahmed Mohammed Nour, also a Sudanese national, has been hospitalised in Jalandhar, police said.
In his police complaint, Nour said he, along with Wada and three female friends, were performing morning prayers when the assailants started abusing them. Two of them were carrying knives.
Nour said one of the assailants allegedly demanded his sister's phone number. When they were told to stop misbehaving, the assailants stabbed Nour and Wada in the chest and fled.
A local resident, Prabhat Dubey, came to the injured students' help and took them to a hospital, where doctors declared Wada brought dead, police said.
In his complaint, Nour named the six assailants -- Abdul Ahad of Karnataka and Kunwar Amar Partap Singh, Aditya Garg, Mohammed Shoaib, Sushank Shaggy and Yash Vardhan Rajput, all residents of Maheru Colony.
Police said the accused were residing in a rented accommodation in Maheru village near the university.
Phagwara Superintendent of Police Rupinder Kaur Bhatti said a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Another man spoke about how they faced a shortage of food because of the military clashes.&nbsp;
'There was a lot of firing. It was happening right next to our room. We did not have food,' he said.

Biden ordered American troops to evacuate embassy personnel after receiving a recommendation earlier Saturday from his national security team with no end in sight to the fighting.

It's unconscionable and it must stop,&rdquo; Biden said. &ldquo;The belligerent parties must implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, allow unhindered humanitarian access, and respect the will of the people of Sudan.&rdquo; The evacuation order was believed to apply to about 70 Americans. U.S. forces were flying them from a landing zone at the embassy to an unspecified location.
The State Department has suspended operations at the embassy due to the dire security situation. It was not clear when the embassy might resume functioning.
"The widespread fighting has caused significant numbers of civilian deaths and injuries and damage to essential infrastructure and posed an unacceptable risk to our Embassy personnel," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.
The fighting erupted April 15 between two factions whose leaders are vying for control over the country. The violence has included an unprovoked attack on an American diplomatic convoy and numerous incidents in which foreign diplomats and aid workers were killed, injured or assaulted.
The White House has said it has no plans for a government-coordinated evacuation of American citizens trapped in Sudan. An estimated 16,000 private U.S. citizens are registered with the embassy as being in Sudan.

Some of the refugees had been caught up in the fighting in Sudan, it said.
"In the past days, an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 people have fled the conflict in Sudan's Darfur region to seek refuge in neighbouring Chad," the agency said in a statement, citing figures from its teams at the border.
"The initial, most pressing, needs are water, food, shelter, health care, child protection, and prevention of gender-based violence.
"Due to the violence experienced by those crossing the border, psychosocial support is also among our top priorities."
UNHCR said eastern Chad, which borders Darfur, was already hosting 400,000 refugees from Sudan, and the new arrivals were placing additional strain on the country's already overstretched public services and resources.

The army denied the claims, and in a statement late Saturday, the Sudanese air force urged people to stay indoors as it continued air strikes against bases of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Fighter jets were earlier seen flying overhead.
Windows rattled and apartment buildings shook in many parts of Khartoum during the clashes, according to AFP correspondents, with explosions heard early Sunday.
"The total number of deaths among civilians reached 56," said the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors, an independent pro-democracy group of medics, adding there were "tens of deaths" among security forces but they were not included in the new toll early Sunday.
The committee said it had counted around 600 wounded including some among security forces and that many casualties could not be transferred to hospitals due to difficulties in moving during the clashes.
Saudi Arabia's flag carrier Saudia said earlier one of its planes, with passengers and crew aboard waiting for departure, was "exposed to gunfire damage".

Sudan had been undergoing a fragile journey toward civilian rule since the 2019 ouster of autocrat Omar al-Bashir, but was plunged into turmoil when military leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan launched his coup on October 25 and detained Hamdok.
Hamdok was reinstated on November 21 under a deal promising elections for mid-2023, but local media had recently reported he had been absent from his office for days, with rumours swirling over his possible resignation.
"I have tried my best to stop the country from sliding towards disaster," Hamdok said Sunday evening, addressing the nation on state television.

Hamdok was reinstated on November 21 under a deal promising elections for mid-2023, but local media had recently reported he had been absent from his office for days, with rumours swirling over his possible resignation.

"I have tried my best to stop the country from sliding towards disaster," Hamdok said Sunday evening, addressing the nation on state television.
Sudan "is crossing a dangerous turning point that threatens its whole survival," he said.
Mass protests against the coup have continued even after Hamdok was reinstated as demonstrators did not trust general Burhan and his promise to guide the country toward full democracy.
Protesters have also alleged that the deal to reinstate Hamdok was&nbsp; simply aimed to give a cloak of legitimacy to the generals.&nbsp;
