Punjab launches an ambitious Rs 500 crore plan, providing up to 80% subsidies for CRM machinery, reducing stubble burning effectively.

Aiming to bring the stubble burning to zero in the state, Punjab Government has formulated an action plan worth Rs 500 crore to provide farmers with latest CRM machinery on subsidy and implement other strategies to manage the paddy straw efficiently.
Disclosing this here today, Punjab Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian said that the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department has invited online applications from the state farmers to avail subsidies on the procurement of Crop Residue Management (CRM) machines. The &nbsp;applications can be submitted through online portal agrimachinerypb.com from April 22 to May 12, 2025.
Encouraging the farmers to take advantage of the scheme, S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian said that the Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann led Punjab Government has been offering a 50% subsidy to individual farmers and an 80% subsidy to Farmer Groups, Cooperative Societies and Gram Panchayats for the purchase of CRM machines.
This initiative aims to make CRM machinery more accessible to farmers, promoting its adoption and ultimately contributing to a cleaner environment, he added.
The Agriculture Minister said that the subsidy would be available on CRM machinery include Super SMS, Happy Seeder, Super Seeder, Surface Seeder, Smart Seeder, Zero Till Drill, Baler, Rake, Shrub Master/Rotary Slasher, Paddy straw Chopper/Shreder/Mulcher, Crop Reaper, Hydraulic Reversible Mould Board Plough.
Dr. Basant Garg, the Administrative Secretary of Agriculture department, said that Punjab witnessed significant progress in crop residue management. The state government distributed 17,600 subsidised CRM machines to individual farmers, cooperative societies, and panchayats during previous season.
Additionally, 1,331 Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs) were also established to facilitate CRM practices. These efforts resulted in a 70% decrease in fire incidents during the previous season compared to 2023, with only 10,909 incidents recorded compared to 36,663 in 2023.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also said the government will give Rs 200 per cylinder subsidy to Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries for 12 cylinders in a year to help ease some of the burden arising from cooking gas rates rising to record levels.

A World Trade Organisation (WTO) panel has asked India to withdraw sugar subsidy as the world's second largest producer of sugar allegedly violated global trade rules.Brazil, Australia and Guatemala had bought the case to the WTO in 2019, claiming India was in violation of 'support' rules by providing excessive subsidy. According to the findings of the WTO, India provided support to sugarcane growers in excess of the permitted level of 10% of the total value of sugarcane production. India believes that its measures are consistent with its obligations under the WTO agreements, and the ministry of commerce and industry said in a statement on Tuesday that a WTO panel’s findings were “erroneous". “India has initiated all measures necessary to protect its interest and file an appeal at the WTO against the report, to protect the interests of its farmers," said the ministry.
