A 25-year-old Indian student who had been missing since last month was found dead in the US city of Cleveland, the second death within a week as the community grapples with a string of such tragedies.
Mohammad Abdul Arfath, hailing from Nacharam, Hyderabad, arrived in the US last year in May to pursue a Masters in IT from Cleveland University.
&ldquo;Anguished to learn that Mr Mohammed Abdul Arfath, for whom search operation was underway, was found dead in Cleveland, Ohio,&rdquo; the Consulate General of India in New York said in a post on X.
Offering &ldquo;deepest condolences&rdquo; to Arfath&rsquo;s family, the Consulate said it is in touch with local agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into his death.
&ldquo;We are extending all possible assistance to the bereaved family to transport his mortal remains to India,&rdquo; the Consulate added.
Last month, the Consulate said that it was working with local law enforcement authorities to locate the Indian student.
Arfath&rsquo;s father Mohammed Saleem had said that Arfath last spoke to him on March 7, and since then he has not been in touch with his family. His mobile phone is switched off as well.
&ldquo;We are working with local law enforcement agencies to find him at the earliest,&rdquo; the Consulate had said.
Arfath&rsquo;s roommates in the US had informed his father that they lodged a missing persons complaint with Cleveland Police. However, on March 19, Arfath&rsquo;s family received a call from an unidentified person, who claimed that Arfath had been kidnapped allegedly by a gang selling drugs and demanded USD 1,200 to "release" him.
The caller also threatened to sell Arfath&rsquo;s kidneys if the ransom wasn't paid, his father said.
"I got a call from an unknown number, and the caller informed me that my son had been kidnapped and demanded money. The caller did not mention the mode of payment but just asked to pay the amount. When I asked the caller to allow us to talk to my son, he refused," Saleem told PTI in Hyderabad.
Arfath&rsquo;s parents have requested the Central government to take necessary measures to locate and bring back their son safely. Saleem has also written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
The incident is the latest in a string of troubling cases pertaining to the safety and security of Indian students in the US.
Last week, an Indian student in Ohio, Uma Satya Sai Gadde, died and police are investigating the case.

Ninety-eight students died by suicide in the past five years in higher education institutions, including central universities, IITs, IIMs, NITs and IISERs, according to the Union Ministry of Education.
Twenty cases of student suicides have already been reported in higher education institutions (HEIs) in 2023 so far. These include nine cases from central universities and seven from IITs.
The data was shared by Union Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar in response to a written question in the Rajya Sabha.
The minister informed that the majority of the suicide cases being reported in the last four years were from engineering institutions.
According to the data, of the 98 students who died by suicide, the maximum cases were from IITs (39), followed by NITs (25), central universities (25), IIMs (4), IISERs (3) and IIITs (2).
In terms of the year-wise breakup, the government data shows that 20 student suicides were reported in these institutions in 2023 so far, 24 in 2022, seven each in 2021 and 2020, 19 in 2019 and 21 in 2018.
In a separate question on category-wise suicides, the data revealed that of the seven cases in IITs this year, two students were from SC and one from OBC categories. Of the nine cases in central universities, six were from SC, ST, OBC and the minority communities.

The Powai police are investigating the matter and have also visited Solanki&rsquo;s home in Ahmedabad.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has formed a panel to conduct a &ldquo;parallel&rdquo; probe into the death of a first-year B.Tech student amid allegations of caste bias and has urged its students to come forward if they have &ldquo;relevant&rdquo; information.
The panel is headed by Professor Nand Kishore and also has SC/ST Students Cell members, including faculty and students, a few student mentor coordinators and the in-charge chief medical officer of IIT Bombay hospital, said a statement by institute Director Subhasis Chaudhuri on Saturday.
Darshan Solanki (18), who belonged to a Scheduled Caste community, allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the seventh floor of a hostel building on the Powai campus of the IIT on February 12, but his family suspects foul play in his death and said he faced discrimination.
The Powai police are investigating the matter and have also visited Solanki&rsquo;s home in Ahmedabad.
Highlighting that Prof. Nand Kishore was the chief vigilance officer of IIT Bombay till recently and is experienced &ldquo;in these matters&rdquo;, Chaudhari said that the committee is actively meeting everyone who might have relevant information.
&ldquo;If you have any information that you believe may be relevant, please reach out to the committee by either meeting any of the committee members, or by emailing Prof. Nand Kishore or to the Powai Police,&rdquo; Chaudhari appealed through the statement.
IIT Bombay and police are actively investigating the &ldquo;environment, incidents, and reasons behind Darshan's tragic death&rdquo;, it said. The police have interviewed a large number of people, and also taken Solanki&rsquo;s phone and laptop for forensic analysis, Chaudhari said.
