As Labour Day was observed on Thursday, the leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) expressed concern that several states were incorporating the new codes into their laws.
He said the Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU), a central trade union affiliated with the CPI(M), has called for a strike on May 20 to protest the labor codes and other issues. He asserted that this would be the beginning of a new resistance to the new codes.
&ldquo;We could stall the implementation of the new labor codes for the last five years; there were numerous strikes, general strikes, and sectoral actions, and they could not notify the code. Now, they are processing it with different state governments, and they had planned to notify them on the 1st of April. Somehow, they could not notify them,&rdquo; Sen told PTI.
The four labor codes passed by Parliament replace 29 existing labor laws. These codes regulate wages, industrial relations, social security, occupational safety, health, and working conditions.
Sen said numerous mechanisms have been designed by the government to surpass labor laws.
"They are making numerous administrative mechanisms by which they are curbing even the rights which are available to the worker. They are incentivizing the employers to violate the laws by way of decriminalizing those offenses. They will pay some fine and get out of this,&rdquo; he said.
He said representatives of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) met with trade unions on April 29 to discuss a proposal to reduce the penalty charges applicable to defaulters of employee provident fund contributions.
&ldquo;The defaulters are being promoted this way... All the trade unions have opposed it, saying it is legalizing the violation of the law. They are decriminalizing the offenses and reducing the penalty, thereby legalizing or legitimizing the violations. So, in that kind of situation, the workers have no other right,&rdquo; he said.
"The struggle was unleashed throughout the globe, and for defined working hours, sacrifices were made. Ultimately, the eight-hour workday was internationally recognized. So, when those rights are being thought to be taken away, the workers' strategy is to defy that, resist that process, and assert those rights,&rdquo; he said.
He also alleged that laws are being misused to target those involved in protests and agitations against the union government.
&ldquo;The collective rights of workers are being sought to be curtailed. Now, collective agitation is being charged as organized crime under the Bharatiya Naya Samhita section 111, and leaders have been put in jail,&rdquo; he said.
According to CPI(M) leaders, two trade union leaders in Uttar Pradesh and one in Jammu and Kashmir were arrested under this section.

Harpreet Singh alias Happy Passia, a gangster-turned-terrorist who has been held in the US, was wanted in orchestrating 16 terror attacks including 14 grenade attacks in Punjab, official sources said on Friday.
Passia (29) was held by the FBI and the US Immigration department's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), in Sacramento in the US.
In January, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh on Passia in connection with a hand grenade attack on a house in Chandigarh in September last year.
Passia and Pakistan-based designated terrorist Harwinder Singh Sandhu alias Rinda were among the four accused named in a charge sheet in the case by the NIA.
Punjab Police investigation had found that Passia provided the accused with explosives, weapons and logistical support through his local associates.
The September 2024 attack was intended to target a retired Punjab Police officer, who the assailants believed to be the occupant of the house in Sector 10, Chandigarh.
A total of 33 FIRs have been registered at different police stations and 10 look out circulars have been issued against Passia, according to a dossier prepared by Punjab Police.
Hailing from village Pashia in Amritsar district, Passia had left for Dubai in April 2018 and returned to India in February 2019. He went to London in October in 2020 and thereafter moved to the US.
Passia was initially aligned with Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang members including the US- based associates Darmanjot Singh (Darman Kahlon) and Amritpal Singh (Amrit Bal).
This affiliation with the Bhagwanpuria gang marks the inception of Passia's involvement in organized crime, laying the foundation for his subsequent collaboration with Pakistan-based Harwinder Singh Rinda, a designated terrorist of Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).
Rinda, lately, roped in Passia for execution of terror attacks in the state.
Between September and October 2023, Passia, in collusion with Rinda, orchestrated a series of extortion and terror activities in Punjab, India, according to the dossier.
They targeted liquor contractors and businessmen by making extortion calls and executing arson and shooting incidents at liquor vends in Batala and Amritsar to instill fear and force compliance.
Several terror and criminal modules backed by the Rinda-Passia network were busted by Punjab Police. The modules were raised to target leaders of Hindu groups, police establishments, serving and retired Punjab Police officers, processions carried out by Hindu groups, liquor contractors from Amritsar-Batala region for execution to raise funds for terrorism.
The alliance between Passia and Rinda led to the formation of a nefarious network aimed at executing acts of terror across Punjab.
Passia's collaboration with Rinda intensifies the gravity of his actions.
His participation in planning and orchestrating terror modules aimed at targeting key figures in Punjab underscores a significant threat.
Between late 2024 and early 2025, BKI orchestrated a series of 16 terror attacks across Punjab, including 14 hand grenade assaults, one improvised explosive device (IED) attack, and one rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) strikes targeting police establishment and officials' residences.
A notable incident involved the planting of an IED near Ajnala Police Station on November 23, 2024 and a RPG (rocket propelled grenade) attack on Police establishment Qila Lal Singh district Gurdaspur on the intervening night of 6 and 7 April.
These attacks were coordinated by Passia under the direction of Rinda, and in collaboration with his other US-based associates - Gurdev Singh Jaisal Pehalwan, Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi Nawanshehria and Germany-based Swaran Singh alias Jeevan Faujia, along with their local accomplices.
The Rinda-Passia network has been recruiting juveniles, often struggling with drug addiction, to carry out terrorist activities in exchange for money and narcotics.
In December 2024, Punjab Police arrested a 17-year-old involved in planting an IED at Ajnala Police Station, who confessed to being lured into the operation with promises of drugs and cash.

"The best way to help them and help everyone else in the country is for us to get a grip and reduce inflation as quickly as possible," Prime Minister Rish Sunak told a watchdog panel of MPs late last year.
Lynch told AFP news agency the union was "really sorry that we have had to take this action, that it does impact them (the public) and we understand their frustration, indeed their anger.

Protesters and riot police clashed on the streets of Paris on Tuesday, as a result of fuel shortages and industry strikes across the country.
Industries across France went on strike to push for pay hikes that keep up with rising inflation, ramping up the clash between workers and the government after weeks of walkouts that hobbled oil refineries and sparked fuel shortages around the country.
Strikers demanded higher wages from the windfall profits of energy companies that have seen high oil and gas prices as Russia's war in Ukraine aggravates an energy crisis.
Many fuel stations have temporarily closed while awaiting deliveries. About 30% of France's fuel stations are experiencing temporary shortages, with the Paris area and northern France most affected.

Sporadic incidents of violence were reported in various parts of Kerala as the dawn-to-dusk hartal called by radical Islamic outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) was underway in the southern state on Friday.
The hartal was called by the PFI to protest against the raids in the offices and residences of its leaders and their subsequent arrests on Thursday by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and other agencies for allegedly supporting terror activities in the country.
Stones were pelted at Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses (KSRTC) in various districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Alappuzha.
Local media reported that a petrol bomb was hurled at a vehicle which was carrying newspapers for distribution at Narayanpara in Kannur in the morning.
In Alappuzha, KSRTC buses, a tanker lorry and some other vehicles got damaged in the stone pelting allegedly by those supporting the hartal call.
Meanwhile, Kerala police beefed up security in the state and issued directions to the district police chiefs to ensure law and order after the PFI called for a day-long state-wide hartal.
Multi-agency teams spearheaded by the NIA had arrested 106 functionaries of the PFI on Thursday in near simultaneous raids at 93 locations in 15 states for allegedly supporting terror activities in the country.
Kerala, where PFI has some strong pockets, accounted for the maximum number of 22 arrests, officials said.

Meanwhile, the AIIMS administration issued a memorandum stating that no employees or faculty members were allowed to stop work for any reason. Nurses were asked to abide by the code of conduct.
Harish Kajla, who was suspended, said that the entire issue was over the safety of women nurses, who were demanding a change in duty hours.
