The Sensex fell over 1,000 points on Monday, dipping below the 77,000 mark due to heavy selling in global equities and rising crude oil prices.

Equity benchmark Sensex cracked over 1,000 points to dive below the 77,000 level on Monday, tracking heavy selling in global equities and a spike in international crude prices.
A strong US jobs data that dampened early rate cut expectations, the rupee logging its steepest single-day fall in nearly two years and unabated foreign fund outflows also dampened investors' sentiment.
Falling for the fourth straight session, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex tanked 1,048.90 points or 1.36 per cent to finally settle at 76,330.01. During the day, it plunged 1,129.19 points or 1.45 per cent to 76,249.72.
The NSE Nifty dropped 345.55 points or 1.47 per cent to close at 23,085.95.
From the 30-share blue-chip pack, Zomato cracked nearly 7 per cent. Power Grid, Adani Ports, Tata Steel, NTPC, Tata Motors, Tech Mahindra, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Asian Paints, Sun Pharma and UltraTech Cement were the other major laggards.
In contrast, Axis Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Consultancy Services and IndusInd Bank were the gainers.
"The global markets witnessed a significant sell-off, prompting a similar response in domestic markets due to strong US payroll data suggesting fewer rate cuts in 2025. This has strengthened the dollar, driven up bond yields, and made emerging markets less attractive. Recent GDP downgrades and slowing earnings amidst higher valuations are weighing heavily on market sentiment," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.
In Asian markets, Seoul, Shanghai and Hong Kong settled lower. Markets in Japan were closed for a holiday.
European markets were quoting in the red. US markets ended in the negative territory on Friday.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 2,254.68 crore on Friday, according to exchange data. Foreign investors have withdrawn Rs 22,194 crore from Indian equities so far this month.
"US imposing sanctions on Russian oil exports pushed the rupee to a fresh low against the dollar, which in turn triggered massive correction in domestic equity markets as overseas investors continued to desert the local share market. Wide-spread selling across the sectors fuelled along with massive exits in mid and smallcap stocks further worsened the sentiment.
"Rising crude oil prices would raise concerns of a spike in domestic inflation, which could further delay any rate cut hopes from the RBI in the near to medium term," Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd, said.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude jumped 1.43 per cent to USD 80.90 a barrel.
The rupee logged its steepest single-day fall in nearly two years and ended the session 58 paise down at its historic low of 86.62 (provisional) against the US dollar on Monday.
India's industrial production (IIP) growth accelerated to a six-month high of 5.2 per cent year-on-year in November 2024, riding on the increased festive demand and pick up in manufacturing sector, according to the official data released on Friday.
The BSE benchmark Sensex declined 241.30 points or 0.31 per cent to settle at 77,378.91 on Friday. The Nifty dropped 95 points or 0.40 per cent to 23,431.50.

Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty nursed losses for the third consecutive session on Friday, in lockstep with a weak trend in global equities as concerns over economic growth and quarterly earnings sapped risk appetite.
Surging crude oil prices and a strengthening dollar index also hit investor sentiment.
In a volatile trade, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex declined 241.30 points or 0.31 per cent to settle at 77,378.91. During the day, the benchmark gyrated 820.15 points between the intraday high of 77,919.70 and a low of 77,099.55.
As many as 3,167 stocks declined, 827 advanced and 84 remained unchanged on the BSE.
The NSE Nifty dropped 95 points or 0.40 per cent to 23,431.50.
On the weekly front, the BSE benchmark slumped 1,844.2 points or 2.32 per cent, and the Nifty dropped 573.25 points or 2.38 per cent.
"Domestic market sentiment remained subdued due to rising crude oil prices, driven by supply concerns, and a strengthening dollar index. Despite the IT sector's resilience following positive early Q3 results, broader indices bled due to uncertainties surrounding Trump policies and high valuations.
"Consolidation may persist in the near term, yet investors are closely watching the US non-farm payroll data today for further guidance," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.
From the 30-share blue-chip pack, IndusInd Bank, NTPC, UltraTech Cement, Sun Pharma, Axis Bank, State Bank of India, Tata Steel, Power Grid, Adani Ports and Kotak Mahindra Bank were among the major laggards.
Tata Consultancy Services jumped nearly 6 per cent after the IT services company reported an 11.95 per cent jump in the December quarter net profit to Rs 12,380 crore.
Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, Infosys and Bajaj Finserv were the other big gainers.
"Markets continued its downward trajectory as rupee scaling new lows due to strengthening dollar has further dampened investors&rsquo; sentiment. Amid concerns of subdued economic growth and expectations of a slowdown in the quarterly earnings, investors cut their bet on banking and mid and small-cap stocks.
"With expensive valuations of Indian markets at large still a concern, investors would mostly resort to stock-specific activities," Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd, said.
The BSE smallcap gauge dropped 2.40 per cent, and the midcap index declined 2.13 per cent.
Among BSE sectoral indices, power tanked 3.07 per cent, utilities (2.86 per cent), realty (2.64 per cent), industrials (2.08 per cent), commodities (2.05 per cent) and consumer durables (1.98 per cent).
BSE Focused IT jumped 3.17 per cent, IT (2.65 per cent) and teck (2.24 per cent) were the biggest gainers.
In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong settled lower.
European markets were trading lower. US markets were closed on Thursday.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 7,170.87 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude jumped 2.02 per cent to USD 78.47 a barrel.
In the previous session, the 30-share BSE benchmark dropped 528.28 points or 0.68 per cent to sink below the 78,000 level at 77,620.21. The Nifty slumped 162.45 points or 0.69 per cent to 23,526.50.

Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty tumbled nearly 1 per cent on Thursday due to heavy selling in market heavyweights HDFC Bank, TCS and Reliance as investors turned nervous over earnings growth concerns amid unabated foreign capital outflows.
Besides, abysmally low Chinese inflation data, an indication of poor demand, and a sell-off in US bonds added to the pressure, traders said.
TCS is kick-starting the December quarter results calendar on Thursday.
Falling for the second straight day, the 30-share benchmark dropped 528.28 points or 0.68 per cent to sink below the 78,000 level at 77,620.21. During the day, it tanked 605.57 points or 0.77 per cent to 77,542.92.
The NSE Nifty slumped 162.45 points or 0.69 per cent to 23,526.50.
From the 30-share Sensex blue-chip pack, Tata Steel, Zomato, Larsen &amp; Toubro, Tata Motors, Adani Ports, Tata Consultancy Services, HDFC Bank and NTPC were the major laggards.
Nestle, Hindustan Unilever, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Asian Paints and Bharti Airtel were among the gainers.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 3,362.18 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data.
"The Indian stock market mirrored the decline across its Asian peers, with cautious investor sentiment driven by a sell-off in US bonds. The US 10-year Treasury yield surged to its highest level since April 2024, signalling the expectation of fewer rate cuts by the Fed.
"Further, disappointing inflation data from China added pressure, indicating that recent stimulus measures have failed to rejuvenate one of the world's largest consumer markets," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.
In Asian markets, Seoul settled in positive territory, while Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong ended lower.
European markets were trading on a mixed note. US markets ended mostly in the green on Wednesday.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.11 per cent to USD 76.05 a barrel.
The BSE benchmark declined 50.62 points or 0.06 per cent to settle at 78,148.49 on Wednesday. The Nifty skidded 18.95 points or 0.08 per cent to 23,688.95.

The 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex fell 50.62 points or 0.06 per cent to settle at 78,148.49. During the day, it dropped 712.32 points or 0.91 per cent to 77,486.79.
The NSE Nifty skidded 18.95 points or 0.08 per cent to 23,688.95.
"Slowing economic growth projections and caution ahead of Q3 numbers added volatility in the market. However, the market witnessed a recovery from the day&rsquo;s low owing to the accumulation of beaten-down blue-chip stocks and in expectation of government reforms in the upcoming budget to lift the tepid economy. The near-term sentiment is likely to be subdued due to the rise in US bond yield and fear of fewer rate cuts by the Fed," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.
From the 30-share blue-chip pack, Adani Ports, UltraTech Cement, Larsen &amp; Toubro, Sun Pharma, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, NTPC and State Bank of India were the major laggards.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 1,491.46 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data.
In Asian markets, Seoul and Shanghai settled in the positive territory, while Tokyo and Hong Kong ended lower.
European markets were trading in the green. US markets ended lower on Tuesday.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.79 per cent to USD 77.66 a barrel.
India's economic growth rate is estimated to slip to a four-year low of 6.4 per cent in 2024-25, mainly on account of poor showing by the manufacturing and services sector, according to government data released on Tuesday.
The gross domestic product (GDP) rate of 6.4 per cent will be the lowest since the Covid year (2020-21) when the country witnessed a negative growth of 5.8 per cent. It was 9.7 per cent in 2021-22; 7 per cent in 2022-23; and 8.2 per cent in the last fiscal ended March 2024.
The BSE benchmark climbed 234.12 points or 0.30 per cent to settle at 78,199.11 on Tuesday. The Nifty gained 91.85 points or 0.39 per cent to 23,707.90.

In a recent report, Jefferies' analyst Christopher Wood identified a potential correction trigger for the Indian stock market: a poor performance by the incumbent BJP government in the ongoing six-week-long general election.
The election results are expected on June 4. In his latest "Greed &amp; Fear" note, Wood highlighted that emerging market foreign investors might reduce their investment in India.
"This is why a repeat of the shock BJP defeat in 2004 remains unlikely in the extreme. At that time, the Sensex corrected by 17 percent in the two days after the election results on May 13, 2004. In GREED &amp; fear&rsquo;s view there would be an even worse outcome in the event of a repeat of such a shock result," Wood wrote.
