The Special Investigation Team's (SIT's) chargesheet in the Hathras satsang stampede case came under sharp criticism in a court on Friday, with Supreme Court advocate A P Singh, representing Bhole Baba, describing it as a "bundle of lies" influenced by media and political pressure.
The chargesheet was discussed during a hearing in the district court here in connection with the stampede in Sikandrarao tehsil on July 2 last year which claimed 121 lives, most of them women and children during a religious gathering addressed by Surajpal alias Narayan Sakar Hari alias Bhole Baba.
Talking to reporters after the court proceedings, Singh, who is also representing all accused in the matter, said, "The SIT's chargesheet is nothing but a bundle of lies. It has been prepared hastily under media pressure, government influence and public outrage. Innocent people have been wrongly implicated." He added that detailed arguments were submitted in the court to highlight the alleged inconsistencies and flaws in the investigation.
"It is already becoming clear in the court that this chargesheet is fabricated. The truth will soon come to light and justice will prevail," he asserted.
Singh said out of the 11 event organisers, eight have already secured bail from the high court. "Only three individuals, chief organiser Devprakash Madhukar along with Mukesh and Megh Singh, remain in judicial custody," he said.
The court has scheduled the next hearing in the case for May 2, when further arguments are expected.
The tragic incident had drawn national attention, prompting the formation of a high-level SIT to probe the circumstances that led to the deadly stampede.
Surajpal alias Bhole Baba is not mentioned as an accused in the police FIR.
Event organisers are accused in the FIR over the event, where authorities found that the crowd had swollen to over 2 lakhs, much beyond the permitted limit of 80,000.

Hundreds of devotees turned up from across the country for the 10-day Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam commencing from January 10.
"Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu comforted devotees who were injured in yesterday&rsquo;s (Wednesday) stampede at SVIMS (Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS)," said an official statement.
The CM spent 90 minutes in the hospital with the injured devotees. He visited one patient after the others and heard their grievances.
Earlier, Naidu visited the accident site where the stampede claimed six lives and injured many.
Accompanied by several ministers, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) officials and others, the CM inspected the makeshift arrangements made to handle the multitudes of crowds arriving for the pilgrimage.
At the stampede site, Naidu demanded answers from TTD joint executive officer (health &amp; education) M Gowthami over the incident.

The SHO of Ramgopalpet Police Station had issued a notice to Allu Arjun regarding his proposed visit to the hospital and advised him to keep it confidential so that public order could be maintained in and around the hospital.
The SHO said police would make necessary arrangements for his visit.
The 'Pushpa' actor had earlier said that he remained deeply concerned about the boy, who is under constant medical care after the incident. He wished the boy a speedy recovery and said he is looking forward to meeting him and his family, but was advised not to due to ongoing legal proceedings.
The stampede occurred at Sandhya theatre in Hyderabad on December 4 as fans gathered to catch a glimpse of the actor during the Pushpa 2 premiere.
Following the tragedy, a case was registered against Allu Arjun, his security team, and the theatre management at the Chikkadpally police station. The charges were filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a complaint by the deceased woman&rsquo;s family.
He was arrested on December 13 in connection with the case. However, the Telangana High Court granted him interim bail on December 14. He was granted regular bail by a city court on January 3.

Eyewitness Shakuntala Devi told PTI that the stampede took place while people were leaving the venue at the end of the 'satsang'. They fell atop each other, she said.
The stampede apparently occurred due to overcrowding, Sikandra Rao police station SHO Ashish Kumar said.
According to officials, a team comprising the Agra additional director general of police and the divisional commissioner of Aligarh will probe the incident.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede and instructed officials to reach the accident site and carry out relief measures. He announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh ex gratia for the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.
The Uttar Pradesh government said an FIR will be registered against the organisers of the programme.
Adityanath also directed the district administration to arrange for proper treatment of those injured and immediately take them to hospitals. He wished them a speedy recovery.
In a post on 'X' in Hindi, he said, "The loss of lives in the unfortunate accident in Hathras district is extremely sad and heart-wrenching. My condolences are with the bereaved family." Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh ministers Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary and Sandeep Singh were headed for the incident site and the chief secretary and police chief have been directed to reach the spot.

The Commission of Inquiry (CoI) will be headed by Justice B Seshasayana Reddy, a retired judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, an order issued by Chief Secretary K S Jawahar Reddy said.
Eight persons were killed in a stampede at Kandukuru town in SPS Nellore district on December 28, 2022 during a political meeting of Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu.
On January 1, three persons were killed in a stampede at a free gift distribution programme, wherein the tragedy occurred some time after former chief minister Naidu had left the venue.
The CoI has been asked to submit its report in a month.

150 Party goers, mostly in their teens and 20s, clad-in Halloween costumes were crushed in the stampede in the clogged alley of Itaewon while over 100 are injured.&nbsp;
Jeon Ga-eul, 30, who was having a drink at a bar at the moment the stampede hit told AFP, "My friend said: something terrible is happening outside,". "I said: what are you talking about? And then I went outside to see and there were people doing CPR in the street."
The crowd was exceptionally dense on Saturday night, eyewitnesses told AFP, with Jeon saying that even ahead of the disaster, he had felt unsafe.
"There were so many people just being pushed around and I got caught in the crowd and I couldn't get out at first too," he said.
One eye-witness described on Twitter the panic that started when people "kept pushing down" into the already crowded alleyway.

Meanwhile, South Korea's President Yoon Suk-yeol has declared a period of national mourning Sunday and has ordered a probe into the tragedy.

Some suffocated in the chaos and others were trampled, the police informed the local reporters. East Java Police chief Nico Afinta said, 'In the incident, 129 people died, 2 of whom are police officers, 34 people died in the stadium and rest in the hospital'. Over 300 were rushed to the hospital but many died on the way and during treatment. Several viral footages show videos of fans rushing towards the ground, fighting, and images of body bags.

 Apologising for the brutal incident, the Indonesian Football Association said that an investigation team has been formed that has left for Malang.

A 55-year-old woman from Noida and a 65-year-old devotee from Jabalpur died in the incident, a senior official said.
The administration has taken the incident seriously and Agra commissioner Amit Gupta is reaching Mathura to assess the reasons that led to it and provide guidance to the local administration, the official added.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incident and directed officials to ensure that all necessary help is provided to the injured, according to an official statement issued in Lucknow.
He also directed the Home Department to ensure proper arrangements are made at religious places during festivals to prevent any untoward incidents, the statement said.&nbsp;

Videos posted on social media by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders showed some girls falling, those behind them stumbling, while others tried to run past. A few people tried to rescue those stuck underneath even as panic increased.

BJP leader Priti Gandhi, while tweeting visuals of the incident, said, "Shocking visuals from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh!&nbsp;A stampede-like situation occurred at the Congress marathon. Several girls fell &amp; have been hurt. Thankfully no lives were lost. Is it right to play with human lives to fulfill your political ambitions, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra?"
Congress leader Supriya Aron reacted to the news by drawing a parallel with the recent stampede at the Vaishno Devi Shrine. She said that the tendency to move before others is part of human nature. She said that participants at the marathon were young girls, and some 'bhaag-daud' (chaos) occurred at the event. She also tendered an apology for the incident.
Videos from the marathon also showed lack of adherence to Covid-appropriate protocol, with no social distancing, and improper use of face masks. This occurred even as the Congress party has been accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of giving preference to crowded rallies instead of controlling the disease's spread.
