Three Chinese astronauts docked early Wednesday with their country&rsquo;s space station, where they will overlap for several days with the three-member crew already onboard and expand the facility to its maximum size.
Docking with the Tiangong station came at 5:42 a.m. Wednesday, about 6 1/2 hours after the Shenzhou-15 spaceship blasted off atop a Long March-2F carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on Tuesday night.
The six-month mission, commanded by Fei Junlong and crewed by Deng Qingming and Zhang Lu, will be the last in the station&rsquo;s construction phase, according to the China Manned Space Agency.

The station&rsquo;s third and final module docked with the station earlier this month, one of the last steps in China&rsquo;s effort to maintain a constant crewed presence in orbit.
The crew of the Shenzhou-15 will spend several days working with the existing 3-member crew of the Tiangong station, who will then return to Earth after their six-month mission.
The station has now expanded to its maximum size, with three modules and three spacecraft attached for a total mass of nearly 100 tons.
Tiangong can accommodate six astronauts at a time and the handover will take about a week. That marks the station&rsquo;s first in-orbit crew rotation.

As per the plans announced earlier by China, the space station is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Once ready, China will be the only country to own a space station.

China successfully launches cargo spacecraft for its space station in orbit

The cargo craft is expected to conduct a fast-automated rendezvous and docking with the space station combination.

China successfully launched its cargo spacecraft Tianzhou-5 on Saturday to deliver supplies for its space station, the construction of which is expected to be completed this year.
The Long March-7 Y6 rocket, carrying Tianzhou-5 which blasted off this morning from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in the southern island province of Hainan has successfully entered its designated orbit, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) said.
It declared the launch a complete success, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The cargo craft is expected to conduct a fast-automated rendezvous and docking with the space station combination.
Earlier, on October 31, China launched the second lab called Mengtian module to be part of its Tiangong space station taking its construction into the final stage. According to an earlier announcement by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASTC) the low-orbit space station construction was expected to be completed this year.

Two batches comprising three astronauts were flown to the space station, the main module called Tianhe on a six months mission to complete the construction. While one set of astronauts returned, another set of three astronauts is currently based in Tianhe to complete its construction.
Once ready, China will be the only country to solely own a space station and will be a competitor to the NASA-led International Space Station (ISS) which is a collaborative project of several countries including Russia.
Observers say the CSS may become the sole space station to remain in orbit once the ISS retires in the coming years.
The significant feature of China's under-construction space station is its two robotic arms, especially the long one over which the US has previously expressed concern over its ability to grab objects including satellites from space.
With a larger door, Mengtian is capable of releasing miniaturised satellites into space. "Astronauts can install the small satellites on a payload transfer device, depressurise the airlock cabin, and then convey them out of the cabin," said Meng Yao, a designer of Mengtian.
"The robotic arm outside the space station will grab the satellites and then catapult them in specified directions," Meng was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.&nbsp;

Yuri Borisov, who was appointed earlier this month to lead the state-controlled space corporation Roscosmos, said during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia will fulfill its obligations to other partners at the International Space Station before it leaves the project.
&ldquo;The decision to leave the station after 2024 has been made,&rdquo; Borisov said.
Borisov's statement reaffirmed previous declarations by Russian space officials about Moscow's intention to leave the space outpost after 2024.

Despite the rift, NASA and Roscosmos made a deal earlier this month for astronauts to continue riding Russian rockets and for Russian cosmonauts to catch lifts to the International Space Station with SpaceX beginning this fall.
The agreement ensures that the space station will always have at least one American and one Russian on board to keep both sides of the orbiting outpost running smoothly, according to NASA and Russian officials. The swap had long been in the works and was finalised despite frictions over Ukraine in a sign of continuing Russia-U.S. cooperation in space.
