Meet Sony&rsquo;s HT-S400 soundbar, which promises a great sound experience at a relatively low price of ₹21,990. On paper, It seems like a good deal, especially if you&rsquo;ve spent a fair amount on that new TV, and don&rsquo;t exactly have a lakh to spend on a surround sound setup. But just how good does it sound, and is this the right fit for your home theatre system?
<h2>Design</h2>
So, the HT-S400 unit is made up of the soundbar, and an accompanying subwoofer. The soundbar is a simple black design that&rsquo;s mostly made of plastic. There is a metal grille that wraps around the sides as well. There&rsquo;s a row of touch-sensitive buttons on the top, which can switch between Bluetooth and TV modes and control volume and power. On the front you get a simple OLED display which can display status information.
The subwoofer is a similarly simple-looking unit that&rsquo;s made out of wood and plastic. It&rsquo;s entirely black, and has a sound port on the front, and a metal grille protects the speaker above it.
The design is simple, but classy. It won&rsquo;t call attention to itself and will blend in quite nicely in your room&rsquo;s entertainment setup. Build quality is also sturdy and solid on both the bar and the sub.&nbsp;
Dimensions wise, the soundbar is around 35.5-inches wide, which means that it should fit reasonably well under most large TVs. The subwoofer is 15 inches tall and 15 inches in depth, so it should be easy to fit also.

<h2>Utility</h2>
One thing to note about the S400 is that the subwoofer is wireless, so there&rsquo;s no wire connecting the two units. The setup process is completely seamless - when you power up both units, the soundbar and subwoofer will immediately find each other and work as one. There is no pairing process whatsoever, which is extremely convenient. If you have a Sony Bravia TV, the entire soundbar unit will also connect wirelessly with your TV using Bluetooth, making this a really clutter-free setup.
For inputs, the soundbar accepts HDMI ARC, Optical Audio In, and Bluetooth 5.0. Basically, you should be able to connect it with any reasonably modern TV without any issues, and your smartphones or laptops for music playback as well.&nbsp;
The HT-S400 does support the Dolby Digital surround sound format through ARC or Audio Return Channel. It has to downmix the content into a stereo channel anyway, which has middling results, but I'll talk more about that in the performance section. Also, the S400 does not support lossless formats for surround sound like Dolby Atmos.
There is a USB-A port at the back, but it&rsquo;s used only for software updates, and you can&rsquo;t plug in a flash drive and play songs off that.
You do get an optical audio cable in the box, but no HDMI cable, which I would have liked to see, though most people will have a spare one lying around. Also, if you want to wall-mount this product, do note that while it does have holes for screws at the back, you will have to purchase the screws separately.
Sony also packs in a remote, which is pretty small and has a rounded back to help you hold it easily. There are buttons for power &amp; switching input, volume control, and for fine-tuning the amount of bass in the sound. There are also specific buttons for the Sound Field and Voice features, which we&rsquo;ll get to in a bit, and a Night mode which will tune down extreme volumes so as to not disturb other members of your house.

<h2>Performance</h2>
There are two main ways to describe the performance of the HT-S400 soundbar - it&rsquo;s fun, and it&rsquo;s great value for money. This is a 2.1 channel speaker, which means that the soundbar is stereo with left and right channels, and then you do of course get bass from the subwoofer.
Let&rsquo;s talk about music playback quality. The soundbar has balanced mids, which offer clear and detailed vocals and lead instruments. The bass is fantastic - I found it to be really punchy and super tight with the kicks and snares in drums, or even drops and basslines in EDM.
For movies, the great bass from the subwoofer really helps with sound effects in Hollywood blockbusters, like engines or guns or magic effects - they all sound fantastic. The excellent clarity in the upper range also helps with the effects. If you&rsquo;re watching a movie which has really low-mixed dialogue, like anything directed by Christopher Nolan, the soundbar has a specific Voice mode which will boost human voices to help make them more audible.&nbsp;
Also this soundbar gets really loud. It puts out a combined 330W of sound, which is a powerful punch, and you can really feel it. It filled up my reasonably sized room at about 50% volume, and at higher volumes it has enough sound to fill out just about any room. Audio quality remains clean with no distortion even when you crank up the volume.
There&rsquo;s also an S-Force Pro virtual surround feature, which will simulate a surround sound feel with stereo speakers. This has mixed results. It&rsquo;s not the same as a fully immersive 5.1 setup, of course, but it can add to the soundstage and make movies sound better. It does make music sound a little tinny and hollow, so I preferred to turn it off for that purpose.&nbsp;
<h2>Verdict</h2>
Sony&rsquo;s HT-S400 Soundbar is great value for money. It sounds really fun, has great clarity even at high volumes, and has extremely punchy and booming bass. And while it may not deliver immersive surround sound, it does manage to offer an incredible upgrade over TV speakers for both music and movies.

If you need high-quality sound in a compact form factor, the LG QP5 Eclair might be your best bet

This is the LG QP5 Soundbar, LGs latest offering for those that need a great-sounding setup, but don&rsquo;t have the space for a full-size soundbar and sub-woofer. The QP5 Eclair comes with a lot of premium technology for a price of ₹59,990, and today we&rsquo;re going to tell you whether it&rsquo;s worth going for if you&rsquo;re in the market for the compact cinema experience.
<h3>LG QP5 Eclair Soundbar Design</h3>
Design is one of the most important aspects of the QP5, both in terms of form and function. The main speaker is quite compact, measuring less than 30cm, so if you need a soundbar setup with, let&rsquo;s say, a monitor rather than a big TV, the Eclair fits in quite neatly.
The subwoofer is obviously larger, but at around 39cm in length and around 29cm in height, it&rsquo;s not exceptionally large, and should easily fit underneath a reasonably sized desk setup, or even on the table itself.
Weight-wise, the main speaker is just over 1.5kg, while the subwoofer is 7.7kg, so if you&rsquo;re thinking of mounting the entire setup on a table, you may want to keep that in mind.
Moreover, in the interest of being a compact, fuss-free setup, the subwoofer connects to the soundbar wirelessly, but they both do require power individually.
Moving on to the form of the QP5 Eclair, which is actually quite a step away from your usual soundbars. For one, both the main speaker and subwoofer are encased in Jersey fabric and while LG calls this colour variant Black, it looks more of a deep navy blue in person.
The main speaker gets a metal speaker grille on top, underneath which lie the drivers themselves, while the subwoofer&rsquo;s inner structure is made of wood.

<h3>LG QP5 Eclair Soundbar Utility and Connectivity</h3>
For utility, the QP5 comes with a good selection of ports. On the back of the main speaker, you&rsquo;ll see two HDMI ports a USB port, an Optical Audio In and a power input. It&rsquo;s worth mentioning that there&rsquo;s ARC/eARC compatibility for the first HDMI out port, which makes connecting the soundbar to a TV a very seamless process. However, there&rsquo;s only Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity here, and it would have been nice to see a more recent version since this is a new product.
Along with the ports, you&rsquo;ll also notice five buttons on the back. These control Bluetooth pairing, volume up and down, changing input and turning the soundbar on or off.
There&rsquo;s also a couple of LED lights on the front of the main speaker to indicate things like the Bluetooth status and volume level.
However, the buttons aren&rsquo;t the only way to change basic settings, because the QP5 also gets this nice and simple remote. Using it, you can change the volume level, control bluetooth settings, control playback and even access sound presets for certain types of content.
If you&rsquo;d like to ditch the remote altogether though, or access even more functions, you can download the LG Soundbar app. It&rsquo;s available on both iOS and Android, and it offers all of the remote&rsquo;s functionality and then some more. For instance, it allows you to tune the equaliser for both the main speaker and the subwoofer, to tweak them to your preference. It also allows you to run diagnostics to make sure you&rsquo;ve got the QP5 set up just right, for the best possible experience.
<h3>LG QP5 Eclair Soundbar Sound Quality</h3>
In terms of technology, the QP5 is quite well-equipped. There&rsquo;s support for Dolby Atoms, DTS:X, and the AI Sound Pro algorithm which identifies content and tweaks the sound to enhance your listening experience. Moreover, if you use the QP5 soundbar with a compatible LG TV, AI Sound Pro works with the Alpha 9 AI Processor to deliver a clear, consistent viewing experience.
Power-wise, the QP5 is rated for a total 320W of power output, and it delivers that via a 3.1.2 channel setup. The main speaker outputs a total 100W, using 5 driver units, while the subwoofer outputs the rest of the 220W.
Now, in terms of sound fidelity, the QP5 is pretty good, and that main speaker is deceptively loud for its size. It gets almost obnoxiously loud at full chat, and if you&rsquo;re going to use this setup in a reasonably-sized bedroom, the sound output should suffice.
Sound reproduction is quite clear, and both mids and highs are well-balanced on the whole. The subwoofer didn&rsquo;t produce a very impressive show, especially when it came to cinematic content, but I realised it was mostly due to how neutral the default sound profile is. Once I tweaked the equaliser to my liking using the LG Soundbar app, the subwoofer produced more than enough thump, even from some pretty demanding, bass-heavy tracks.
Moreover, since the subwoofer gets bi-directional units, there&rsquo;s very little vibration, so you should be able to mount it on a lower shelf underneath a desk or even on top of it without any issues.
It&rsquo;s also worth mentioning that the entire setup is tuned by Meridian, who also tuned the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/tech-news/gadget-review/lg-tone-free-fp9-review-clean-sound-clean-ears-1648207621449" target="_blank">LG Tone Free FP9</a> earbuds we reviewed earlier this year, so sound quality is certainly quite good thanks to that partnership.
<h3>LG QP5 Eclair Soundbar Verdict</h3>
So, at ₹59,990, the LG QP5 Eclair Soundbar doesn&rsquo;t come cheap. It&rsquo;s a premium price tag for a product that does come with a lot of handy features and good sound quality, but also faces a lot of competition from more powerful options in this segment. That being said, the QP5 Eclair is more geared towards someone that needs a powerful, fuss-free audio setup in a compact environment, and in that particular case, it&rsquo;s possibly the best in the business.

<h3>Design</h3>
In terms of design, the Musicbar Karaoke is a bit of an upgrade from the previous <a href="https://www.editorji.com/tech-news/gadget-review/saregama-carvaan-musicbar-review-powerful-sound-under-7-000-1632403067399" target="_blank">Saregama Carvaan Musicbar</a>, because it gets these rose-gold accents on the button area, and this fake-wood trim at the ends. The subwoofer is very simply designed, with no buttons at all, but the Carvaan logo is finished in Rose Gold to match the soundbar.
Both the soundbar and subwoofer are made of plastic, which makes them very light. The soundbar weighs just 1.6kg, while the subwoofer comes in at 4.92kg.
This lightweight package makes it easier to wall-mount the soundbar, which is why Saregama has thoughtfully included a wall-mount adapter on the back of the soundbar, right out of the box. Additionally, you get mounting brackets and screws inside the box, so you can set this up pretty easily if you have a drill at home.
Along with the mounting brackets at the back, you&rsquo;ll find the different ports and inputs for the Carvaan Musicbar. As for the subwoofer, it doesn&rsquo;t have any inputs or buttons, but it gets a cable to connect to the soundbar.

<h3>Ports &amp; Features</h3>
In terms of ports, the Musicbar Karaoke gets a wide variety of inputs. There&rsquo;s USB 3.0, AUX In, HDMI ARC and Coaxial input. You also get Bluetooth 5.0 and FM Radio. Being a Carvaan product, the soundbar also comes with 1,000 pre-loaded evergreen Hindi songs, and there&rsquo;s a booklet in the box to help you browse through the track list.
Now the biggest upgrade on this Musicbar compared to the previous model is the Karaoke function, which uses these two mics included in the box. Saregama also includes four Duracell AA batteries, two for each mic. The mics themselves connect to the soundbar automatically once you hit the mic button on the soundbar and turn on the mics.
Once you&rsquo;ve got the mics setup, you can use any source for a Karaoke track and sing using the Carvaan mics.
Apart from this, you&rsquo;re also provided a remote to control various functions, an HDMI cable and a 3.5mm cable&mdash;all in the box itself.

<h3>Sound</h3>
Specification-wise, there&rsquo;s four 2.5-inch speakers in the Musicbar, and one 6.5-inch driver in the subwoofer, for a total 120W of power output.
Now, the Musicbar Karaoke is aimed at mass-market users, so it has a largely bass-heavy sound profile that&rsquo;s suited to appeal a larger audience. The subwoofer puts out loud, booming bass that dominates the sound signature, but you do have controls on the remote to tune the bass and treble to your liking.
The Musicbar Karaoke has a very sharply V-shaped sound signature with recessed modes, but sounds really fun for any kind of music that thrives on bass. Clarity does suffer as you turn the volume higher, but even at around 50% volume, the soundbar should easily full most reasonably-sized rooms.
You also have presets for when you&rsquo;re using the soundbar to watch movies, so if you are, for instance, watching action movies, the extra bass should help give you that thumping sound effect for explosions and such.

<h3>Verdict</h3>
Overall, the Carvaan Musicbar Karaoke packs in a lot of features for its ₹9,990 price point. It gets loud, offers a pleasing sound signature for those that love thumping bass, and comes with a wide variety of input options. If you&rsquo;re looking for a feature-rich upgrade from your default TV speakers, this is a pretty good choice.
