As Covid cases surge in Delhi, the government on Wednesday made wearing of masks mandatory in public places and imposed a fine of Rs 500 on violators.
Officials said the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, in its meeting, also decided not to shut schools, but chose to come up with a a separate Standard Operating Procedure in consultation with experts.
The government is expected to issue an official order regarding the mandatory use of masks soon.
Sources said authorities have been asked to keep a close watch on social gatherings and ramp up testing in the national capital.
They said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is closely monitoring the situation.
On Tuesday, Delhi recorded a nearly 26 per cent jump in fresh COVID-19 cases.
The health department said 632 fresh cases were reported on Wednesday and the positivity rate was 4.42 per cent.
The city had on Monday recorded 501 cases and zero death while the positivity rate stood at 7.72 per cent.

The Centre on Wednesday revised the existing guidelines for international arrivals to India. The revised guidelines, which will come into effect from October 25, require mandatory RT-PCR report, showing samples tested as negative for passengers to board an international flight to India.
The revised guidelines laid down protocols to be complied with international travellers as well those to be followed by airlines, points of entry &mdash; including airports, seaports and land border &mdash; for risk profiling of passengers.
However, the travellers from&nbsp;the European Union, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Brazil, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand and Zimbabwe, would need to follow additional measures on arrival in India, including post-arrival Covid-19 testing.

The Union health ministry on Thursday issued a revised SOP for conducting examinations during the COVID-19 pandemic, removing the provision that allowed symptomatic candidates who insist on taking an exam in isolation.
According to the revised guidelines, a symptomatic candidate should be referred to the nearest health centre and given an opportunity to take the examination through other means, or the university or educational institution shall arrange for taking the exam at a later date.
Appropriate arrangements should be made at exam centres for personal protection gear like face covers or masks, and hand sanitisers, soap, for students and exam centre staff.
For pen and paper-based tests, the SOP outlines that the invigilator will sanitise his or her hands before distribution of question papers or answer sheets and examinees will also sanitise their hands before receiving or handing back them back.
Use of spit or saliva for counting and distributing sheets shall not be allowed, the SOP said.
