Responding to a distress call, the Indian Navy's INS Sumitra successfully saved an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel, which was hijacked by the Somalian pirates. Navy officials on January 29 said that INS Sumatra's swift response ensured the safe release of all 17 crew and the ship on the Somalian east coast.
The vessel was subsequently sanitised and released for onward transit.
"INS Sumitra, on anti-piracy operations along the East Coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden, responded to a distress message regarding hijacking of an Iranian-flagged Fishing Vessel Iman. The vessel had been boarded by pirates and the crew was taken as hostages," Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said, according to PTI news agency.
The spokesperson further said that the rescue operation was carried out in accordance with the established SOPs to coerce the pirates for the safe release of the crew along with the boat.&nbsp;
Recently, the Indian Navy strengthened its surveillance in response to a series of attacks along the Arabian Sea and its adjacent areas.

The Indian Navy has deployed warship INS Chennai following the hijacking of a Liberian-flagged merchant vessel near Somalia coast.

The Indian Navy has deployed a warship following an incident of hijacking of a Liberian-flagged merchant vessel, with some Indian crew members, in the Arabian Sea.
The incident of hijacking of the cargo ship MV Lila Norfolk was reported on Thursday by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a British military organisation that tracks movements of various vessels in strategic waterways.
Indian Navy's mission deployed platforms responded swiftly to a maritime incident in the Arabian Sea involving the hijacking on board a Liberia-flagged bulk carrier, a Navy spokesperson said.
He said the vessel sent a message on UKMTO portal indicating boarding by around five to six unknown armed personnel on Thursday evening.
Responding swiftly to the developing situation, Indian Navy launched a maritime patrol and has diverted INS Chennai deployed for maritime security Operations to assist the vessel.
It is learnt that the crew of the vessel comprised a number of Indians.
Indian Navy's maritime patrol aircraft overflew the vessel early Friday and established contact with the vessel, ascertaining the safety of the crew, the official said.
"Naval aircraft continues to monitor movement and INS Chennai is closing the vessel to render assistance," he said.
"The overall situation is being closely monitored, in coordination with other agencies in the area," he said.

A spokesman for the Al-Shabab extremists, Sheikh Abu Musab, asserted that more than 150 Somali soldiers and officers were killed.
Neither side's claim could be independently verified, but Galcad resident Abukar Uluso told The Associated Press there was heavy gunfire exchanged.
&ldquo;It was during the dawn prayer when I heard the sound of explosions followed by an exchange of gunfire,&rdquo; Uluso said.

An Associated Press journalist at the scene saw &ldquo;many&rdquo; bodies and said they appeared to be civilians travelling on public transport. He said the second blast occurred in front of a busy restaurant.
The director of the Aamin ambulance service told the AP they had collected many wounded or killed. One of the ambulances responding was destroyed in the second blast, Abdulkadir Adan added in a tweet.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility in a city often targeted by the al-Shabab extremist group.
The attack in Mogadishu occurred on a day when the president, prime minister and other senior officials were meeting to discuss combating violent extremism, especially by the al-Qaida-affiliated al-Shabab group.

Somali forces have ended a nearly 30-hour siege of a hotel by Al-Shabab fighters in the country's capital Mogadishu, a security commander told AFP.
At least 13 civilians were reportedly killed and several injured in the siege which began with the Al-Qaeda affiliate fighters unleashing a gun and bomb attack on the popular Hayat Hotel on Friday evening.
"The security forces have ended the siege now and the gunmen are dead, we've had no incoming gunfire from the building in the past hour," the commander was quoted as saying by the AFP.
The government has not yet released details of the total number of casualties be it on the part of civilians, security forces or Al-Shabab fighters.
The security forces are yet to clear the luxury hotel of explosives that may have been planted or left behind by the militants.

One notable complication in counting deaths is the extremist group al-Shabab, whose control over large parts of southern and central Somalia is a barrier to aid.
The group's harsh and neglectful response to Somalia's drought-driven famine from 2010-12 was one factor in the deaths of more than a quarter-million people, half of them children.
Another factor was the international community's slow response.
Now the alarms are sounding again.
More than 200,000 people in Somalia face "catastrophic hunger and starvation, a drastic increase from the 81,000 forecast in April," a joint statement by UN agencies said on Monday.
They noted that a humanitarian response plan for this year was just 18% funded.
Somalia isn't alone.
In Ethiopia's drought-affected regions, the number of children treated for the most severe malnutrition has jumped 15% since the same period last year, according to UNICEF data shared with AP.
More than 5,000 children aged under five in the country's Somali region were found to have the most severe malnutrition in April.
Meanwhile, aid rations have been reduced because of resource shortages.
And weekly admissions for severe malnutrition treatment are steadily growing, "a tip of the crisis," UNICEF says.
In Kenya, the aid group Doctors Without Borders reported at least 11 deaths in a single county's malnutrition treatment programme over a monthlong period earlier this year.

The group's harsh and neglectful response to Somalia's drought-driven famine from 2010-12 was one factor in the deaths of more than a quarter-million people, half of them children.
Another factor was the international community's slow response.
Now the alarms are sounding again.
More than 200,000 people in Somalia face "catastrophic hunger and starvation, a drastic increase from the 81,000 forecast in April," a joint statement by UN agencies said on Monday.
They noted that a humanitarian response plan for this year was just 18% funded.
Somalia isn't alone.
In Ethiopia's drought-affected regions, the number of children treated for the most severe malnutrition has jumped 15% since the same period last year, according to UNICEF data shared with AP.
More than 5,000 children aged under five in the country's Somali region were found to have the most severe malnutrition in April.
Meanwhile, aid rations have been reduced because of resource shortages.
And weekly admissions for severe malnutrition treatment are steadily growing, "a tip of the crisis," UNICEF says.
In Kenya, the aid group Doctors Without Borders reported at least 11 deaths in a single county's malnutrition treatment programme over a monthlong period earlier this year.
