The cabinet on Thursday approved the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to equip one crore households with rooftop solar installations. The scheme, with an outlay of 75,021 crore rupees, was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on February 13, 2024. Scheme provides a central financial assistance of 30,000 subsidy for 1 kilowatt system, 60,000 for 2 kilowatt systems and 78,000 for 3 kilowatt systems or higher. Households will be able to apply for subsidy through national portal and can select suitable vendor for installing rooftop solar. Not only this households can access collateral-free low-interest loan products of around 7 per cent at present for installation. Model Solar Villages will be established across districts, serving as beacons for the widespread adoption of rooftop solar technology in rural areas.

Asserting that the Ram temple ceremony in Ayodhya strengthened his resolve to have rooftop solar systems at people's houses, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced the launch of a scheme under which one crore homes will have this power source.
"I have taken my first decision after returning from Ayodhya that our government will launch 'Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojna' with the aim to install rooftop solar systems in one crore houses," Modi said on X.
He posted pictures of him discussing the scheme with officials here following his return from Ayodhya where he attended the consecration ceremony.
Devotees across the world always draw energy from the light of "suryavanshi" Lord Ram, he said.
The scheme, he said, will not only reduce the electricity bill of the poor and the middle class but will also make India self-reliant in the energy sector.&nbsp;

75 year old Selvamma has been selling corn for the past 18 years, she used to fan the corn to grill it standing under the hot sun. But recently her cart was fitted with a solar powered fan to replace her cane fans. "For so many years I have been doing this, they felt I might be tired. They found me two months ago and gave me this" , said Selvamma. SELCO Foundation gave this fan to ease her efforts, so she doesn't have to use the cane fan anymore.
