Whether it is caused by smoking tobacco or second hand&nbsp;smoke or air pollution, respiratory problems are on the rise. As per the Global Impact of Respiratory Disease Report, despite the availability of cost-effective health therapies, respiratory disorders are the primary cause of deaths and disability.
Moreover, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)&nbsp;affects almost 200 million people which constitutes 4% of the global population. And 3.2 million people die from COPD each year, making it the world's third major cause of death. The emergence of the coronavirus has only made the situation worse.&nbsp;
As highlighted by the Forum of International Respiratory Societies, there are some steps that can be taken to help reduce the problem of respiratory diseases.&nbsp;

As per a new finding, certain medications that mimic the effects of cigarette smoke can reduce the ability of the COVID-19 virus from entering the human cells.&nbsp;

Since the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been large-scale speculation with respect to smoking cigarettes and the probability of catching the virus.
On the one hand, there are some studies that have suggested that smoking can increase the severity of the disease. On the other hand,&nbsp;there are also reports that have suggested less number of&nbsp;Covid&nbsp;cases amongst smokers as compared to non-smokers.&nbsp;
New research conducted at the Hiroshima University in Japan has helped identify that certain drugs that imitate the effects of cigarette smoke can help reduce the ability of the Covid-19 virus to enter the cells.&nbsp;
Published in the journal Scientific Reports, the study suggests that the cigarette smoke extract and the two drugs can help suppress the creation of ACE2 proteins. By doing so, it will also help reduce the&nbsp;ability of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to enter the cell.&nbsp;
The team is now all set to conduct pre-clinical and&nbsp;clinical trials on the drugs as novel anti-Covid19 therapy.&nbsp;

 Researchers say, women's brains respond differently to nicotine. Add to that, barriers like obesity, stress, anxiety and depression, and it was found that instances of women giving up smoking was less than men.

 For the study, researchers examined more than 35,000 smokers including men and women from 2001 to 2018 in France. The participants were 18 and older with at least one additional risk factor for cardiovascular disease. All these people used smoking cessation services such as nicotine replacement products, vaping and one-to-one therapy sessions.
