Emphasising the side effects of tobacco, the Standing Committee has proposed a ban on the sale and production of all single cigarettes

The government may soon ban the sale of loose cigarettes. The Standing Committee of Parliament has recommended a ban on selling single cigarettes to curb the use of tobacco products, as per various reports. The Standing Committee of Parliament argued that the sale of loose cigarettes is affecting the tobacco control campaign. The committee also recommended doing away with the smoking zone from all airports in the country.
If the government acts on the recommendations of the Standing Committee, Parliament may soon ban the sale and manufacture of single cigarettes.
The Government had banned the sale and usage of e-cigarettes at the recommendation of the Health Ministry three years ago.

As per a new finding, certain medications that mimic the effects of cigarette smoke can reduce the ability of the COVID-19 virus from entering the human cells.&nbsp;

Since the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been large-scale speculation with respect to smoking cigarettes and the probability of catching the virus.
On the one hand, there are some studies that have suggested that smoking can increase the severity of the disease. On the other hand,&nbsp;there are also reports that have suggested less number of&nbsp;Covid&nbsp;cases amongst smokers as compared to non-smokers.&nbsp;
New research conducted at the Hiroshima University in Japan has helped identify that certain drugs that imitate the effects of cigarette smoke can help reduce the ability of the Covid-19 virus to enter the cells.&nbsp;
Published in the journal Scientific Reports, the study suggests that the cigarette smoke extract and the two drugs can help suppress the creation of ACE2 proteins. By doing so, it will also help reduce the&nbsp;ability of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to enter the cell.&nbsp;
The team is now all set to conduct pre-clinical and&nbsp;clinical trials on the drugs as novel anti-Covid19 therapy.&nbsp;

Secondhand Smoke is “the combination of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke breathed out by smokers”

Can secondhand smoke increase rheumatoid arthritis risk in women?

A new study presented at the Annual European Congress&nbsp;of Rheumatology suggests that secondhand smoke exposure in both childhood and adulthood is linked with an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis in women.
But what is secondhand smoke? As per the Centres for Disease and Control, secondhand smoke is &ldquo;the combination of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke breathed out by smokers&rdquo;.
The study included 79,806 women, around the age of 49, out of which 698 women developed rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed approximately 12 years after the study began in 1990. The association&nbsp;was primarily observed amongst never-smoking women. It was also found that about 13.5 percent of women reported exposure to cigarette smoke as children and 53.6 percent reported being exposed to smoking as adults. What was further observed is that an overall 58.9 percent had secondhand exposure in either adulthood or childhood and 8.25 percent had both.
The result of the study highlighted that &ldquo;smoking by-products, whether actively or passively inhaled, could generate autoimmunity, at least towards antigens involved in rheumatoid arthritis pathogenesis&rdquo;.
The need of the hour is to avoid smoking for the betterment of not just one&rsquo;s own health but also of those around them. If nothing else then passive smoking must definitely be avoided.
