Delhi Police has stepped up security, put up barricades and deployed personnel at the Delhi-Haryana border ahead of farmers’ call to stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in the capital on Monday.
The protest is scheduled for Monday at Jantar Mantar in the national capital for which the farmers have started to arrive in the city.
The police have beefed up security at Delhi’s Singhu border, which was one of the protest sites at the farmers protest in 2020. The police have also put up cemented barricades, tightened security at Tikri border, where farmers have start arriving from outside Delhi.
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Apolitical) has called for a ‘mahapanchayat’ at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Monday, which is expected to be attended by farmers from different states. However, Delhi Police said it has denied permission for the protest.

The police have also put up cemented barricades, tightened security at Tikri border, where farmers have start arriving from outside Delhi.

Security was beefed up on Monday at Delhi borders, including Singhu and Ghazipur, ahead of the 'mahapanchayat' called by farmers' body at Jantar Mantar, police said on Monday.
They said all vehicles entering the capital are being checked and police personnel are on the 'alert mode'.
Traffic movement may be affected in many parts of Delhi as the police have put up barricades at border points, they said.
In a tweet, the police asked motorists to avoid Tolstoy Marg, Sansad Marg, Janpath Road, Ashoka Road, Outer Circle Connaught Place, Baba Kharak Singh Marg and Pandit Pant Marg due to farmers' mahapanchayat.
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha and other farmers' groups are organising the congregation and they will pass through outer district, which includes Ghazipur border in Ghaziabad, officials said.
"In this connection, adequate deployment of local police and outside force has been made in outer district at Tikri border, major intersections, along railway tracks and metro stations to avoid any untoward incident," a police official said.

Why farmers' union umbrella body SKM rejected Centre's MSP panel?

As per the Agriculture Ministry&rsquo;s gazette notification, the panel will comprise NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand, who had said that the repeal of the three farm laws is a &lsquo;setback&rsquo; to higher price realisation by cultivators.

A day after the Centre formed a committee on Minimum Support Price (MSP), the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of farmer unions rejected it for having &ldquo;so-called farmer leaders&rdquo; who supported the now-repealed farm laws as its members.
The committee was finally formed on Monday, eight months after the central government had promised to set up such a panel while withdrawing the three contentious farm laws that saw nationwide protests by farmers with thousands of them camping at Delhi borders for over a year. The committee has been tasked with finding ways to make MSP available to farmers more effectively and transparently while making it a legal guarantee.
&ldquo;Today, we held a meeting of non-political leaders of Samyukta Kisan Morcha. All leaders rejected the government&rsquo;s panel. The government has inducted so-called farmer leaders in the panel who didn&rsquo;t have anything to do with our agitation against the three farm laws at the Delhi borders,&rdquo; said farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar.
SKM further accused the government of including people from the corporate sector in the MSP panel.
As per the Agriculture Ministry&rsquo;s gazette notification, the panel will comprise NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand, who has in the past expressed his disagreement with the repeal of three farm laws which according to him is a &lsquo;setback&rsquo; to higher price realisation by cultivators.
On legalisation of MSP, he had said in a 2021 interview to Livemint, "Legalizing MSPs spells doom for the crops market and implies takeover of trade by government. Such interventions are fiscally ruinous. It will also kill the entrepreneurial skill of our innovative farmers, robbing them of opportunities to take advantage of emerging demand patterns."
Other members in the panel include agri-economists CSC Shekhar from the Indian Institute of Economic Development, Sukhpal Singh from IIM- Ahmedabad, and senior member of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) Naveen P Singh.
Among farmers&rsquo; representatives, the committee will have national award-winning farmer Bharat Bhushan Tyagi, three members from SKM, and five members from other farmer organisations that include Gunwant Patil, Krishnaveer Choudhary, Pramod Kumar Choudhary, Guni Prakash and Sayyed Pasha Patel.
Two members of the farmers&rsquo; cooperative, IFFCO Chairman Dilip Sanghani and CNRI General Secretary Binod Anand are included in the panel.
Senior members of agricultural universities, five central government secretaries and chief secretaries of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim and Odisha are also part of the committee.

The SKM has also announced that at the end of this campaign, on July 31, a chakka jam of all the major highways across the country will be organized from 11 am to 3 pm.
It has also been decided in the meet that the farm organizations will mobilize unemployed youth and ex-servicemen against the Agnipath military recruitment scheme, which is "anti-national and anti-youth as well as anti-farmer".
"To expose the Agnipath scheme, 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' conferences will be organized across the country from August 7 to August 14, in which ex-servicemen and unemployed youth will also be invited," the statement read.
On the 75th anniversary of Independence, a 75-hour mass dharna will be held in Lakhimpur Kheri from August 18 to August 20, demanding sacking of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, it stated.
Eight people, including four farmers, were killed in Lakhimpur Kheri during the violence that erupted when farmers were protesting against Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya's visit to the area on October 3 last year.
Union minister Ajay Mishra's son Ashish Mishra is an accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) will hold a nationwide protest on March 21 to protest against the Centre for not fulfilling its promises, including setting up of a panel on MSP and withdrawal of cases against farmers, its functionaries said on Monday.
It was decided after a day-long closed door meeting was held at the Gandhi Peace Foundation at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg here.
SKM leaders and members reviewed the progress made so far by the Centre on the promises made to farmers, including setting up a panel on MSP.
"There has been no progress in fulfilling the promises made by the Centre to farmers on the issue of forming a panel on MSP to make legislation on it, withdrawal of cases against farmers and expulsion of Union minister Ajay Mishra Teni from the Cabinet.
"So the SKM has decided to hold a nationwide protest at district and block level on March 21 against the central government for non fulfilling promises," senior SKM member Abhimanyu Kohar told PTI.
The SKM, an umbrella body of 40 farm unions, had spearheaded a year-long agitation against the Centre's three farm laws.
It had suspended the stir on December 9 last year after the government revoked the contentious laws and agreed to consider its six other demands, including withdrawal of cases registered against farmers during the agitation, a legal guarantee on MSP and compensation for kin of farmers who died during the protest.
Later in a statement, the SKM said farmers will observe 'MSP guarantee week' from April 11 to 17 under its next phase of nationwide campaign.
The non-implementation of the assurances given by the government to the farmers' movement, even after three months, exposes its anti-farmer intentions, the statement said.
"It was unanimously decided that between April 11 and 17, a nationwide campaign would be launched by observing MSP Legal Guarantee Week. During this week, all the constituent organizations associated with the SKM will organize demonstrations and seminars, demanding legal guarantee of MSP as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission,” the statement said.
The Morcha reviewed the written assurances given by the government to the Samyukta Kisan Morcha on December 9 and found that even after three months the government had not acted upon its key assurances, it said. "There is no trace of the assurance of forming a committee on MSP. Except Haryana, the police cases registered against the farmers during the agitation in other states have not been withdrawn. Delhi Police has spoken of partial withdrawal of some cases but there is no concrete information about that as well.
"The SKM has decided to organize a nationwide protest on March 21, regarding the role of the government in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, and the betrayal of the assurances given to the farmers' movement," the SKM statement said.
