A Chinese official said Thursday that eight people have died in the sinking of a cargo ship in waters between Japan and South Korea.
Lyu Guijun, the consul general in the western Japanese city of Fukuoka, told state broadcaster CGTN that six of the eight victims were Chinese.
There were 22 crew members &mdash; 14 from China and eight from Myanmar &mdash; on the 6,551-ton Jin Tian. It sank early Wednesday about 160 kilometres (100 miles) southwest of Nagasaki, Japan.
Five of the crew have been rescued, including four Chinese, Lyu said. Another eight or nine remain missing, according to varying reports.
Maritime transport websites said the vessel left Malaysia's Port Klang on Dec. 3 and was headed for South Korea's Incheon port. The Hong Kong-registered ship was carrying lumber.

Royal Thai navy ship carrying sailors sinks in Gulf of Thailand due to engine failure

It occurred while the warship was on patrol at sea 32 kilometres (20 miles) from the pier at Bangsaphan district in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

A Thai navy ship sunk in the Gulf of Thailand and ships and helicopters were working Monday to rescue sailors from the water.
As of midmorning, 75 sailors had been rescued and 31 were still in the water, the navy said.
Strong winds blew seawater onto the HTMS Sukhothai corvette and knocked out its electrical system Sunday evening. The Royal Thai Navy dispatched three frigates and two helicopters with mobile pumping machines to try to assist the disabled ship by removing the seawater but it couldn't do so because of the strong winds.
The loss of power allowed more seawater to flow into the vessel, causing it to list and sink.
It occurred while the warship was on patrol at sea 32 kilometres (20 miles) from the pier at Bangsaphan district in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.
While northern and central Thailand are seeing their coldest temperatures of the year, far southern Thailand has been experiencing storms and flooding in recent days. Ships were warned to stay ashore.&nbsp;

The hole appeared on Saturday near the Alcaparrosa copper mine in Tierra Amarilla, Copiapó province.
One member of the Tierra Amarilla community told Chilean TV the incident confounded their fears about the site, which is owned by the Candelaria mining company.
A health center and a number of homes are located a mere 600 meters (2,000 feet) from the rim of the hole.
Candelaria's administrative director Karina Briño said the company had "no idea" what had caused the sinkhole to open.
The interim director for Chile's National Geological and Mining Service, David Montenegro, said his offices would look in to the matter to provide residents with some answers and reassurance.

The incident occurred in Worcestershire between May 20 and 22. The accidents led to the flooding of a nearby road, and closure of a waterway.
The drunk group allegedly crashed one of the barges into another boat on May 20 evening. The sailor of the other boat, Amanda Huxtable said that she was frightened, and called the police. The group allegedly hit multiple boats on the same night.
Meanwhile, a barge sank while passing through a lock on the Droitwich canal in Worcestershire. It took rescue teams most of May 21 to unblock the canal, even as water levels rose and flooded nearby roads.
The Canal and Rivers Trust is reportedly investigating the incident.
