Other nations like the UAE, Mauritius, and Indonesia will likely follow suit.&nbsp;
Singapore is the first country with which a cross-border Person-to-Person (P2P) payment facility has been launched.
PM Modi, after the launch of the cross-border connectivity between the UPI and PayNow of Singapore, said that about 74 billion transactions amounting to more than Rs 126 trillion, which is approximately 2 trillion Singapore dollar, was done through UPI in 2022.
Modi along with his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong witnessed the launch of cross-border connectivity between the UPI and PayNow of Singapore via video conferencing.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) of India and PayNow of Singapore are now connected for seamless cross-border transactions between the two countries.&nbsp; Beginning now, residents of both India and Singapore will be able to transfer money to each other instantly using UPI and Singapore's PayNow.&nbsp; For the launch of this facitiliy, token transactions using the UPI-PayNow linkage, were made&nbsp; by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das and Managing Director of Monetary Authority of Singapore, Ravi Menon. PM Modi and Singapore Prime Minister attended the launch event virtually.&nbsp;&nbsp;
How is it going to help? Cross border transactions are usually expensive. Now, with this linkage, users from both countries will be able to transfer money faster and in a much more cost-efficient manner. The RBI said that the linkage will be a significant milestone in the development of next-generation infrastructure for cross-border payments between India and Singapore. It will also closely align with the G20's financial inclusion priorities of driving faster, cheaper and more transparent cross-border payments. 
Other countries including Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, USA, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom, will also be integrated with the UPI going forward.&nbsp;

An Indian mother and daughter team has made it to the Singapore Book of Records by creating a 6-by-6 metre rangoli artwork using 26,000 ice cream sticks which depicts notable Tamil scholar-poets.
Sudha Ravi, already listed in the record book for creating a 3,200 sq ft rangoli in 2016, along with her daughter Rakshita, presented the rangoli last week during a cultural event organised as part of the ongoing Pongal festivities in the Little India precinct.
The rangoli, which took a month to create, depicts notable Tamil scholar-poets Tiruvalluvar, Avvaiyaar, Bharathiyaar and Bharathidasan and coincides with the celebration of their works by Kalamanjari, a Tamil cultural organisation here, which organised the event, and the Little India Shopkeepers and Heritage Association (LISHA).
Violin and mridangam artists regaled the audiences with Carnatic music and songs lauding the works of the poets in the event on January 21, the Friday weekly Tabla! reported.
&ldquo;Kalamanjari and team did a vocal performance on the songs of these scholars,&rdquo; said Soundara Nayaki Vairavan, the founder of Kalamanjari, which promotes Tamil literary works through music and dance.

She is also known for making rangolis at community centres, drawing the attention of non-Indian admirers in Singapore.
&ldquo;Sudha and her daughter are part of the Tamil cultural activities in Singapore, and this is an assurance that the younger generation will continue to lift our traditions,&rdquo; said Vairavan, also a stalwart of Tamil language and culture.
Rajini Asokan, who runs a food and beverage business, was in awe of the rangoli, which she said, was an outstanding highlight of the event and made her even prouder of Indian culture.
Kalamanjari organised the event, supported by LISHA, as a part of &lsquo;LISHA Pongal Festival 2023&rsquo;.&nbsp;

The complainant, 57-year-old Hindocha Nita Vishnubhai, said that she has not been able to overcome the trauma from the incident. She was allegedly attacked by Wong Xing Fong on 7 May 2021 for not wearing a mask amid Covid restrictions.
She said that the rules at the time allowed people who were exercising to not wear masks. Hindocha said she typically brisk-walks to work as she does not have the time to do any other form of exercise before work and had pulled down her face mask to the chin to breathe more freely.
As Hindocha was approaching a bus stop beside the Northvale Condominium located along Choa Chu Kang Drive, she heard someone shouting at her from behind, she told the court.
She turned around to see "a couple", Wong and an unnamed woman, gesturing at her and telling her to mask up. She gestured back to indicate that she was exercising and perspiring.
At this point, Wong walked towards her and hurled the racial slur at her, Hindocha claimed. "I don't like to fight, sir, so I said, 'God bless you'," she said, adding that then Wong ran towards her and gave her a "flying kick" in the chest.
The impact, said Hindocha, caused her to fall on her back, leaving her left forearm and palm bleeding. She alleged that Wong and his female companion then "jogged" away as though nothing had happened.
The accused has denied the allegations levelled by Hindocha.

The government is likely to make it mandatory for passengers arriving from China and five other places to have negative RT-PCR reports from next week, official sources said on Wednesday.
The sources said filling up of 'air suvidha' forms and 72-hour prior RT-PCR testing may be made mandatory from next week for international passengers coming from China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore.
The sources said 39 international passengers were found positive for COVID-19 out of the 6,000 tested on arrival in the last two days.
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will visit the airport in Delhi on Thursday to take stock of testing and screening facilities there, they said.

The Indian football team suffered a 0-3 defeat by hosts Vietnam in the Hung Thinh Friendly Tournament on Tuesday.&nbsp;
The Blue Tigers, who were seeking redemption against Vietnam after their draw against Singapore earlier, failed to challenge the home side.
In their previous game, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Singapore (Rank 159), who are ranked 55 places lower than the Indian team in the 104th spot in FIFA rankings.
Vietnam opened the scoring with Phan Van Duc who slotted home in the 10th minute. The visitors came close on some occasions courtesy of forwards Ashique Kuruniyan and Sunil Chhetri but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. The home team scored two goals in the second half to complete the rout.
Team India are without a win since their 4-0 victory against Hong Kong back in June and will be disappointed by their performance during the international break.
With Igor Stimac's job under scanner regarding the team's form, India need some results to go their way before the crucial AFC Asian Cup next year.

Singapore announced on Sunday it will decriminalise sex between men by repealing a colonial-era law while protecting the city-state's traditional norms and its definition of marriage.
During his speech at the annual National Day Rally, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he believed it is the “right thing to do now” as most Singaporeans will now accept it.
“Private sexual behaviour between consenting adults does not raise any law and order issue. There is no justification to prosecute people for it nor to make it a crime," Lee said.
“This will bring the law into line with current social mores and I hope provide some relief to gay Singaporeans.” Lee vowed the repeal will be limited and not shake Singapore's traditional family and societal norms including how marriage is defined, what children are taught in schools, what is shown on television and general public conduct.
He said the government will amend the constitution to ensure that there can be no constitutional challenge to allow same-sex marriage.
“Even as we repeal Section 377A, we will uphold and safeguard the institution of marriage,” Lee said. “We have to amend the Constitution to protect it. And we will do so. This will help us repeal Section 377A in a controlled and careful way.” Section 377A of the Penal Code was introduced under British colonial rule in the 1930s.
British rule over the island ended in 1963 when Singapore became a state of Malaysia. It became independent two years later but retained the Penal Code, which made sex between men punishable by up to two years in jail.
Since 2007 when Parliament last debated whether to repeal Section 377A, its position was to keep the law but not enforce it.
But gay men say the law hangs over their heads and discriminates against them. Thousands of activists annually stage a rally in the city-state known as the “Pink Dot" in support of the LGBTQ community.
Lee said he hopes the government's move will help reconcile and accommodate both the concerns of conservative religious groups and the desires of gay Singaporeans to be respected and accepted.
“All groups should exercise restraint, because that is the only way we can move forward as a nation together," he said. “I hope the new balance will enable Singapore to remain a tolerant and inclusive society for many years to come." One of Lee's nephews, Li Huanwu, is gay. The son of Lee's estranged younger brother Lee Hsien Yang married his partner in South Africa in 2019. Li Huanwu has attended Pink Dot events with his partner and parents.
Other former British colonies still retain similar laws that criminalise sex between men, including neighbouring Malaysia where a former deputy premier was jailed twice for sodomy.
He was sentenced in 2000 and again in 2014, in cases that critics say were politically motivated.
In 2018, India decriminalised gay sex after its Supreme Court in a historic ruling struck down Section 377 that punished gay sex by up to 10 years in prison.
Some Asian countries have also moved to legalise gay marriage, with Taiwan as the first in 2019. Thailand also recently approved plans allowing same-sex unions.

A diplomatic face-off erupted between India and Singapore after the latter's Prime Minister raised the issue of Indian parliamentarians facing criminal cases.
In a speech in the Singapore parliament on how democracies should function, PM Lee Hsien Loong invoked "Ben-Gurion's Israel, and Jawaharlal Nehru's India".
Loong was making the point that many democracies start off with high ideals, but gradually decline.&nbsp;He cited corruption cases against top Israel officials, and criminal cases against Indian legislators. The Prime Minister warned that nothing was stopping Singapore from going down the same path.

"Things start off with passionate intensity. The leaders, who fought for and won independence, are often exceptional individuals of great courage, immense culture, and outstanding ability. The Singapore PM added, "Nehru's India has become one where, according to media reports, almost half the MPs in the Lok Sabha have criminal charges pending against them, including charges of rape and murder. Though it is also said that many of these allegations are politically motivated."
Indian officials called the comments "uncalled for", and Singapore High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, was summoned by the Indian government to register its objection, as per an NDTV report.

 A diplomatic face-off erupted between India and Singapore after the latter's Prime Minister raised the issue of Indian parliamentarians facing criminal cases. In a speech in the Singapore parliament on how democracies should function, PM Lee Hsien Loong invoked "Ben-Gurion's Israel, and Jawaharlal Nehru's India". Loong was making the point that many democracies start off with high ideals, but gradually decline. He cited corruption cases against top Israel officials, and criminal cases against Indian legislators. The Prime Minister warned that nothing was stopping Singapore from going down the same path.
Indian officials called the comments "uncalled for", and Singapore High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, was summoned by the Indian government to register its objection, as per an NDTV report. Here is what the Singapore PM had said in his speech.

"Things start off with passionate intensity. The leaders, who fought for and won independence, are often exceptional individuals of great courage, immense culture, and outstanding ability. They came through the crucible of fire and emerged as leaders of men and nations. They are the David Ben-Gurions, the Jawaharlal Nehrus, and we have our own too," Loong said.
The Singapore PM added, "Nehru's India has become one where, according to media reports, almost half the MPs in the Lok Sabha have criminal charges pending against them, including charges of rape and murder. Though it is also said that many of these allegations are politically motivated."
