The court, which was launched last weekend at the Old Hall at Lincoln&rsquo;s Inn, was set up by British Sikh lawyers.

British Sikh lawyers have come together to set up a new court as a dispute resolution forum for the community caught up in family and civil disputes, a UK media report said on Thursday.
According to &lsquo;The Times&rsquo;, the Sikh court was launched last weekend at a ceremony at the Old Hall at Lincoln&rsquo;s Inn in London accompanied by religious chants.
Baldip Singh, a 33-year-old London-based barrister who is one of the court&rsquo;s founders, told the newspaper that it was not a religious tribunal but aimed at assisting Sikh families in their time of need when dealing with conflict and disputes "in line with Sikh principles".
The new court will operate remotely and in person, and will comprise around "30 magistrates and 15 judges, of whom most will be women". The magistrates will mediate between parties to negotiate a settlement, as well as directing them to a course to help them to work on specific issues, the newspaper report says.
Created following discussions with Sikh charities, the courses would cover low-level domestic violence, anger management, gambling and substance misuse, and are available in Punjabi as well as English. If mediation is unsuccessful, a case can be brought in front of a Sikh court judge, who can give a legally binding judgment under the Arbitration Act.
Baldip Singh said that under the rules of the new court both parties in a case would have to consent to participating.
&ldquo;If we think that there are really significant safeguarding issues that we cannot deal with and should not deal with they will be directed to the appropriate place. We&rsquo;re not here to take over and upset the English courts,&rdquo; said Sharan Bhachu, a barrister reportedly sworn in as the "lead family judge" for the new Sikh court last week.&nbsp;

Indian-origin Manpreet Monica Singh has been sworn in as a Harris county judge, becoming the first female Sikh judge in the US.
Singh was born and raised in Houston and now lives in Bellaire with her husband and two children.
She was sworn in as a judge of the Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 4 in Texas on Friday.
Singh's father immigrated to the US in the early 1970s.

"It means a lot to me because I represent H-town (a nickname of Houston) the most, so for it to be us, I'm happy for it," she said at the oath ceremony.
Indian-American Judge Ravi Sandill, the state's first South Asian judge, presided over the ceremony, which took place in a packed courtroom.
"It's a really big moment for the Sikh community," Sandill said.
"When they see someone of colour, someone a little different, they know that possibility is available to them. Manpreet is not only an ambassador for Sikhs, but she's an ambassador for all women of colour," he said.
There are an estimated 500,000 Sikhs in the US, with 20,000 Sikhs living in the Houston area.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said: "It was a proud day for the Sikh Community, but also a proud day for all people of Colour who see the Diversity of the City of Houston in the Diversity of the Court&rdquo;.&nbsp;

The incident comes just days after 21-year-old Pawanpreet Kaur, another Canadian-Sikh woman, was shot dead outside a gas station in Mississauga on December 3.

A 40-year-old Sikh woman has been killed at her home in Canada and her husband arrested as a suspect, according to Canadian police.
Harpreet Kaur was stabbed multiple times at her home in Surrey, British Columbia on Wednesday night in Surrey, CBC news reported on Friday.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said that they were called to a residence in the Newton area shortly before 9:30 pm on Wednesday for reports of a stabbing.
When the officers arrived, they found a woman with life-threatening injuries who was rushed to the hospital where she died of her injuries, the report said.
Sgt. Timothy Pierotti of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is investigating the homicide along with the Surrey RCMP serious crime unit.

Kaur's husband, also 40, was arrested as a suspect at the scene of the stabbing but has since been released, the report said.
Police have appealed to anyone who has information about Kaur or her death to come forward and help investigators gather enough information to secure charges.
"Our investigators have been working non-stop," Pierotti said.
"These incidents have a significant impact, not only on the family and friends of the victim but the entire community. Surrey RCMP's victim services have been engaged and are available to anyone in need of assistance", he was quoted as saying.

Last month, an Indian-origin teenager Mehakpreet Sethi was stabbed to death by another teenager in a high school parking lot in Canada's British Columbia province.

A statue of a Sikh soldier was unveiled on Sunday in UK's Leicester city to honour Sikhs who fought for Britain in conflicts around the world.
The bronze figure on a granite plinth went on display in Victoria Park on Sunday, the BBC reported.
The Sikh Troops War Memorial Committee said it would complement the existing war memorials already there.
Sikhs made up more than 20 per cent of the British Indian Army at the outbreak of World War I, the report added.
The statue was created by artist Taranjit Singh and paid for with council funding and donations from Sikh congregations.
"We are so proud to be unveiling this memorial to honour the sacrifice of all those brave men who travelled thousands of miles to fight for a country that wasn't their own," Ajmer Singh Basra, president of the committee, was quoted as saying by the report.
He said the statue would serve as a reminder to Sikhs who have made Leicester their home, the report added.
Piara Singh Clair, from Leicester City Council, said: "For many decades, the Sikh community has significantly contributed towards the success of our city.
"I am very pleased that the idea of a Sikh memorial statue - envisaged by the late councillor Culdipp Singh Bhatti MBE - will be unveiled in Victoria Park.
"It will provide a fitting tribute alongside other memorials in the park." The unveiling took place at De Montfort Hall on Sunday and was attended by hundreds of people, including representatives from the armed forces.

All four Sikh family members, including an eight-month-old baby girl kidnapped in California earlier this week, have been found dead.
Local police authorities said the bodies of 36-year-old Jasdeep Singh, 27-year-old Jasleen Kaur, their eight-month-old child Aroohi and the baby's uncle, 39-year-old Amandeep Singh were found on Wednesday evening in a rural and remote area of the Meced county- a city in California's agricultural heartland.  All of the bodies were found close together by a farmer near the orchard. 
The family which hails from Harsi Pind in Punjab's Hoshiarpur was kidnapped from their newly-opened trucking business in California's Merced County on Monday.
48-year-old convinced robber Jesus Salgado was taken into custody in connection with the crime. According to police authorities, Salgado tried to kill himself a day after the kidnapping.
CCTV footage of the kidnapping, released earlier on Wednesday shows brothers, Jasdeep and Amandeep Singh arriving at their business nine minutes apart.  The seven-minute-long surveillance video showed the suspect wearing a dark-coloured hoodie and a face mask walking around a parking lot with a white trash bag in hand. He then talked to one of the victims and followed him up to the office. A little later, the armed suspect is seen opening a side door and leading two men with bound hands identified by the police as Amandeep and Jasdeep outside the building and into the back seat of a truck.  Moments later, the kidnapper returned with the gun, leading Jasleen and her 8-month-old baby, Aroohi, out of the building into a truck.
The motive for the kidnapping has not been found. Family members said nothing was stolen from the trucking company and that the kidnapper made no ransom calls. According to investigators, the ATM card of one of the victims was used at a bank in Atwater, California after they were kidnapped.

Canada-based The Globe and Mail reports that over 100 Sikh men who were working as security guards in the Toronto were laid off for not complying with the city&rsquo;s &lsquo;clean-shave policy'.
The &lsquo;clean-shave policy&rsquo; is termed as a part of the city&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.editorji.com/world-news/why-canada-is-throwing-13-6-million-doses-of-covid-19-vaccine-1657076339856" target="_blank">Covid-19</a> guidelines announced in January this year which requires employees to be clean shaved so as to ensure that their N95 respirators are properly fitted.
The World Sikh Organisation of Canada said that the city&rsquo;s policy has resulted in the &ldquo;exclusion of Sikh security guards who maintain uncut hair as a tenet of their faith.&rdquo;
