An Indian man has been charged in the US over alleged plot to kill a Sikh leader

The United States has charged an Indian man over an alleged plot to assassinate an Indian-origin American citizen who advocates for a separate Sikh state.
The indictment filed by the United States in the New York district states that Nikhil Gupta has been charged with 'murder-for-hire' with the prosecutors saying he was being directed by an employee of the Indian govt.&nbsp;
'Murder-for-hire' charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.&nbsp;
The indictment has not named the US citizen but The Financial Times, citing unnamed sources, last week reported that US authorities thwarted a plot to assassinate banned Sikhs for Justice&rsquo;s Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, and issued a warning to the Indian government over concerns it was involved in the plot.

A Sikh restaurateur living in Australia has alleged that he has been racially targeted several times in recent months, telling him to "go home" and smearing his car with dog excrement.
Jarnail Singh, who runs a restaurant in Hobart, Tasmania, said he has been continuously targeted for over the last two, or three months, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
"Never, ever has this happened to me before, and it's been continuous (over) the last two, three months," Singh was quoted as saying.
"It's mentally very stressful when it comes to your house, and particularly (being targeted) with your name on it... It's too much mental stress. Something has to be done," Singh told ABC News on Tuesday.
The first incident involved dog excrement being smeared on the door handles of his car, for four or five days in a row, outside his home.
Then, he found racist graffiti in his driveway, telling him "Go home, Indian".
He reported the matter to the police, but, without video evidence, little could be done to track down who was behind it.

Filled with racist comments, Singh first assumed the letter had been written by a young person, and did his best to ignore it, after reporting it to police.
The next letter received about a month later, was even more offensive than the first &mdash; including comments like "you can **** off back to India" and threats of damage to his car, at either Singh's work or his home.
Singh has lived in Australia for around 15 years, with 10 of those being in Tasmania.
In a statement, Tasmania Police Commander Jason Elmer said the incidents had been reported to police and were being investigated.
He said current legislation allowed for courts to "consider that a motivation of racial hatred or prejudice can be an aggravating factor in sentencing".
Commander Elmer said there was "no excuse for any form of verbal or physical harassment" in the community, and that people were encouraged to contact police immediately if they believe they have been the victim of a prejudice-related incident.&nbsp;

An Indian-origin Sikh man, described as a "higher-level figure" in the organised crime scene in Canada, and his 11-year-old son were shot and killed in what police have called a &ldquo;sick and twisted&rdquo; escalation of gang violence in the city of Edmonton.
Harpreet Singh Uppal, 41, and his son were gunned down outside a gas station Thursday afternoon in a brazen, daytime shooting, Edmonton Police Service acting Supt. Colin Derksen told the media on Friday.
The boy&rsquo;s young friend, who was in Uppal&rsquo;s car at the time, survived with no physical injuries.
Derksen said police do not know whether the shooter or shooters knew children were in the car when they began following Uppal.
&ldquo;But what we do know, sadly, is that once the shooter or the shooters learned that the son was there, they intentionally shot and killed him,&rdquo; the Edmonton Journal quoted Derksen as saying.
He added killing children was once a &ldquo;line in the sand&rdquo; gang members refused to cross, but that is changing.
&ldquo;That is sick and twisted,&rdquo; Derksen said. &ldquo;I think most gang members would agree.&rdquo; Police have not released the name of the boy, pending autopsy.
Derksen said a suspect vehicle &mdash; a stolen 2012 BMW X6 &mdash; was located on fire north of Beaumont. No one was located inside the vehicle and no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
As of Friday morning, police had made no arrests and identified no suspects.
Derksen said Uppal was a "higher-level figure" in Edmonton&rsquo;s organised crime scene but declined to say if he was affiliated with any specific groups, the report said.
Uppal was facing charges related to cocaine possession and trafficking, as well as illegal possession of body armour. A trial was set to start in April 2024, CBC News reported.
He was also charged with assault with a weapon and unauthorised possession of a firearm in relation to a case from March 2021. The Crown stayed those proceedings in February, it said.
Derksen also declined to say whether police believe the shooting was retaliation for other violence, or whether retaliation for Uppal&rsquo;s killing is expected.
Sources have told Postmedia that Uppal was a prominent Brothers Keepers associate.
His murder is believed to be part of a war between the UN gang and the BK.
While originating in the Vancouver area, the tit-for-tat slayings are now happening across the country. The day before Uppal was killed, B.C. UN gangster Parmvir Chahil was shot to death in Toronto. Media reports said the killings may be linked.
Derksen said it was too early to say &ldquo;if there&rsquo;s a connection&rdquo; to violence in other cities, &ldquo;or if there is, how far-reaching it is.&rdquo; Police said the details of the shooting were immediately posted to social media and detectives are hoping to speak with anyone with information. Anyone with security or dash camera footage that was active in the area at the time is also encouraged to contact police.
Derksen confirmed Uppal and his family were the targets of a 2021 shooting in which a gunman fired through the window of a restaurant where they were having dinner.
The lone man charged in the case &mdash; Harsh Jindal, who police claimed was the getaway driver &mdash; had his charges dropped last month, court records show.
The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service said the charges were stayed after a preliminary inquiry led prosecutors to conclude there was &ldquo;no longer a reasonable likelihood of conviction.&rdquo; &ldquo;With a heavy heart, I contemplate how it&rsquo;s conceivable for a child to be killed in such a tragic manner like this,&rdquo; Alberta&rsquo;s premier, Danielle Smith, said in a statement. &ldquo;Like many of you, I am concerned with the rise in gun violence in our neighbourhoods.&rdquo; Edmonton, like other metropolitan areas across Canada, is grappling with an increase in shootings and gang-related crimes. But the death of a child has intensified police efforts to solve Thursday&rsquo;s daylight shooting.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to give it everything we got,&rdquo; said Derksen. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re pulling out all the stops. We lost a child here.&rdquo;

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has honoured Rajindar Singh Dhatt, one of the last surviving Sikh soldiers who fought in the Second World War with a Points of Light honour at a UK-India Week reception at 10 Downing Street.
Dhatt, 101, was recognised on Wednesday for his service and his work running the "Undivided Indian Ex-Servicemen's Association" to help bring together British Indian war veterans.
Dhatt, based in Hounslow in southwest London since 1963, was born in pre-Partition India in 1921 and fought with the Allied forces during the British colonial period.
&ldquo;It is an immense honour to receive this recognition from the Prime Minister, to whom I would like to extend my deepest appreciation for acknowledging the importance and impact of the 'Undivided Indian Ex-Servicemen's Association'," said Dhatt.
&ldquo;The journey of establishing this organisation was driven by a deep sense of duty as an ex-serviceman and the vision of fostering unity, support, and camaraderie. This award serves as a testament to the tireless efforts of countless individuals who have contributed to the success and growth of the association over the years,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;Their unwavering commitment and selfless service has played a pivotal role in bringing about positive change in the lives of our ex-servicemen and their families,&rdquo; he added.
Dhatt joined the British Indian Army during the Second World War and excelled up the ranks, being promoted to Havildar Major (Sergeant Major) in 1943.
He was later drafted to the Far East campaign to fight in Kohima in northeast India to support the Allied Forces and help break through the Japanese defences, Downing Street said. After the war, Dhatt returned to India before settling in London with his family.
His association recently created an online community for veterans, sharing articles about personal stories and opportunities to connect. Dhatt also continues to speak at memorial events and work with war veteran charities, including the Royal British Legion and the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, telling stories through teaching packs and online resources.
Dhatt said the award is a "momentous occasion" that inspires him to continue making meaningful contributions to society, even as he nears his 102nd birthday.
According to Downing Street, the Points of Light recognise outstanding people whose service is making a difference in their communities and whose stories can inspire others towards innovative solutions to social challenges in their own communities and beyond.
Dhatt's honour coincided with a Downing Street reception celebrating India Global Forum's UK-India Week celebration of the bilateral relationship, where Prime Minister Sunak spoke of Dhatt as an "incredible man" and thanked him for his service as a member of the Indian diaspora "living bridge".&nbsp;

Geneva, PTI: India on Tuesday described Pakistan as an "epicenter of terrorism" and said no one deserves unsolicited lecture on human rights from Islamabad that has consistently persecuted its ethnic and religious minorities including Hindus, Sikhs and Christians.
Exercising the Right of Reply to the statements made by Pakistan at the 45th session of Human Rights Council (HRC) here, the Indian representative said that it has become habitual for Pakistan to malign India with false and fabricated narratives for its self-serving malicious purposes.
"Neither India nor others deserve this unsolicited lecture on human rights from a country that has consistently persecuted its ethnic and religious minorities, is an epicenter of terrorism, has the distinction of providing pensions to individuals on UN Sanctions list and has a Prime Minister who proudly admits training tens of thousands of terrorists to fight in Jammu and Kashmir,&rdquo; the Indian diplomat said.
The diplomat said that it was not surprising that other relevant multilateral institutions have been raising serious concerns on Pakistan&rsquo;s failure to stop terror financing and lack of effective actions against all terror entities in Pakistan.
Highlighting the nefarious designs of Pakistan in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the diplomat said, "the mass influx of outsiders has whittled down the number of Kashmiris to an insignificant number in Pakistan occupied parts of Indian Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Laddakh.&rdquo; "In its zeal to reassert its theocratic ideology, it has ensured that ethnic and religious minorities have no future through systematic persecution, blasphemy laws, forced conversions, targeted killings, sectarian violence and faith-based discrimination," the diplomat said.
"Thousands of Sikh, Hindus and Christian minority women and girls have been subjected to abductions, forced marriages and conversions in Pakistan." On the plight of people in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh, the Indian diplomat said, "Not a single day has gone by when a family in Balochistan doesn&rsquo;t find its members picked up or kidnapped by the security forces of Pakistan.&rdquo; "Pakistan does well when it comes to intimidation and attacks against journalists, human rights defenders and political dissidents in particular by its state machinery. It is not without a reason that Pakistan has been highlighted by international organizations as a country where journalists are slain and their killers go scot free,&rdquo; the diplomat said.
India also slammed Pakistan for &ldquo;abusing various HRC mechanisms and platforms for raising issues, which are extraneous to the mandate of the HRC and which relate to internal affairs of India, with a view to distract the attention of the international community from serious human rights violations committed by it against its own people, including in Indian territories occupied by it.&rdquo; India also rejected the reference made by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of India.
