Police had alleged that Kappan had links with the now-banned Popular Front of India and charged him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code

Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan walked out of jail on Thursday, a day after the sureties required for his bail were submitted in court.
Two sureties of Rs 1 lakh each were submitted on Wednesday in the special PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court here.
Kappan was released from jail around 9.15 am, Jailor of Lucknow District Jail Rajendra Singh told PTI.
Interacting with reporters after coming out of jail, Kappan said, "It has been 28 months. I am out after a lot of fight. I am happy." Asked about the purpose of his visit to Hathras, Kappan said he had gone there for "reporting". About those who had accompanied him, he said they were students.
To questions about recoveries made from him, Kappan said, "Nothing...I had only a laptop and mobile." Asked about reports that some objectionable materials were also found from him, he said, "Two pens and a notepad." The journalist and three others were arrested in October 2020 while on their way to Hathras where a Dalit woman died allegedly after being raped. They were accused of trying to instigate violence over the death of the Hathras woman.
Police had alleged that Kappan had links with the now-banned Popular Front of India and charged him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code.
In September last, the Supreme Court granted him bail in connection with that case. But, he continued to be in jail because of the money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate.

Kappan was arrested in October 2020 while on his way to cover the alleged gangrape and murder of a Dalit woman in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras.

Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan was released from a Lucknow jail on 2 February 2023 after two years of incarceration. His release order was signed more than a month after he secured bail, as per reports.
He secured bail from the Allahabad High Court in an alleged money laundering case on 23 December 2022. The Supreme Court had granted him bail on 9 September 2022 in a UAPA case.
Kappan was arrested in October 2020 while on his way to cover the alleged gangrape and murder of a Dalit woman in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras. Police had reportedly accused him and 3 others of being members of the Popular Front of India (PFI), and planning to disturb law and order in the area.

A journalist from Kerala and three others have been charged under the stringent anti-terror law UAPA, and sedition by the Uttar Pradesh&nbsp;police after they were arrested on their way to&nbsp;Hathras earlier this week.&nbsp;
In a statement issued after the 4 people were arrested on Monday, the UP Police said that they arrested journalist&nbsp;Siddique Kappan, Atiq-ur Rehman,&nbsp;Masood Ahmed and Alam&nbsp;after a tip-off that&nbsp;&nbsp;"suspicious people" were on their way to Hathras from Delhi. The police also claimed that the 4 men had mentioned during questioning that they had links to Popular Front of India and its affiliate.&nbsp;
Kappan&nbsp;is a&nbsp;contributor for a popular Kerala-based website and is also the secretary of the Delhi unit of Kerala Union of Working Journalists.
