Over 300 passengers of a US cruise ship are down with an unidentified sickness.
The passengers of the infamous Ruby Princess cruise ship, which made headlines in 2020 for several COVID-19 outbreaks, have been ill following a mysterious outbreak during voyage from&nbsp; February 26 to March 5, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
US media reported that the outbreak occured during voyage from Texas to Mexico with at least 284 out of 2,881 passengers and 34 out of 1,159 crew members falling sick.
Patients have been diagnosed with symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea as per the US health regulator with the cause of the outbreak still unknown.

A Chinese official said Thursday that eight people have died in the sinking of a cargo ship in waters between Japan and South Korea.
Lyu Guijun, the consul general in the western Japanese city of Fukuoka, told state broadcaster CGTN that six of the eight victims were Chinese.
There were 22 crew members &mdash; 14 from China and eight from Myanmar &mdash; on the 6,551-ton Jin Tian. It sank early Wednesday about 160 kilometres (100 miles) southwest of Nagasaki, Japan.
Five of the crew have been rescued, including four Chinese, Lyu said. Another eight or nine remain missing, according to varying reports.
Maritime transport websites said the vessel left Malaysia's Port Klang on Dec. 3 and was headed for South Korea's Incheon port. The Hong Kong-registered ship was carrying lumber.

South Korean officials said nine of them remain unconscious, but they did not immediately confirm any deaths. They said the crew members would be airlifted to Japan for treatment.
South Korean and Japanese coast guard vessels and aircraft as well as two commercial cargo ships were continuing to search for the eight missing crew members but the efforts were being slowed by strong winds and waves, South Korean officials said.
The Japanese coast guard confirmed the rescue of at least 13 crew members and said five of them &ndash; all Chinese nationals &ndash; were still alive.
The 6,551-ton Jin Tian sank about three and a half hours after it sent a distress call at around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday in Japan's exclusive economic zone, Japanese coast guard spokesperson Shinya Kitahara said.
The vessel, which was Hong Kong registered and carrying lumber, sank about 160 kilometers (100 miles) southwest of Nagasaki, Japan, and about 150 kilometers (93 miles) south of South Korea's Jeju island.
The captain last communicated with the coast guard through a satellite phone around 2:41 a.m., saying crew members would abandon the ship, minutes before it sank, Jeju island coast guard officials said.
Six crew members were picked up by South Korean coast guard vessels, while a cargo ship picked up five and Japanese aircraft picked up three, according to Jeju's coast guard.
According to South Korean and Japanese officials, 14 crew members are Chinese and eight are from Myanmar. According to maritime transport websites, the vessel left Malaysia's Port Klang on Dec. 3 and was headed for South Korea's Incheon port.
The ship is owned by Long Bright Shipping Limited, a Hong Kong-registered company that is a subsidiary of Shenzhen Shekou Shipping Transportation Co., Ltd., according to a July 2022 filing made by the parent company to China's National Equities Exchange and Quotations. The filing says the Jin Tian was used as collateral for a loan that was later repaid.
Calls to a number listed for Shenzhen Shekou Shipping Transportation in mainland China went unanswered on Wednesday during the weeklong Lunar New Year holiday.
South Korean officials didn't immediately say whether the nine who were unconscious were likely to survive their injuries if they weren't already dead. They said the five other crew members who were rescued were either conscious when found or regained consciousness after being rescued.
Kitahara said the cause of the ship's sinking was not immediately known and there were no signs that it collided with another vessel. He said the arrivals of Japanese patrol boats and aircraft were delayed by difficult weather following the sinking.
Officials at Jeju's coast guard say a strong wind warning was issued for the area earlier on Wednesday but was later lifted. Winds were blowing at around 16 meters (yards) per second in the area as of 7 a.m., creating waves that were 3 to 4 meters (yards) high.
The Japanese coast guard said the water in the area remained rough and its temperature was around 14 degrees Celsius.

According to those figures, 76 people have now been rescued, five have been found dead and 24 are still unaccounted for.
Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Chonlathis Navanugraha said the survivor and the bodies, along with some debris, were found about 60 kilometers from where the ship sank. He said the United States, Britain and Malaysia have offered to help in the search.

Heroic Idun's crew was however unable to confirm the identity of the vessel after checking with various shipping and port autohrities and therefore sailed out of the location at full speed fearing a pirate attacked.&nbsp;
The crew claims that they were informed on August 9 that the unidentified ship was Nigerian Navy.&nbsp;

When satellite tracking became common, shady ships simply began switching off the transponder. But this created a problem. Ships with blank gaps in their tracking data found it hard to get credit from banks, and faced other hurdles. This may have led to the rise of fake location technology.

Ships use advanced technology to fake satellite signals. This is essentially a replication of VPN apps on mobile phones. The fake signals come either from the ship or from a remote location. Military-grade AIS transponders are also available on the black market. In many cases, ships transmit stolen coordinates of other vessels to make the fake journey look legitimate.
A few spots on the globe appear to be hotspots of this fake location racket.
Chinese vessels are believed to use this technology to hide their illegal fishing in the Indo-Pacific. Russian ships do this to allegedly smuggle sanctioned oil and stolen Ukrainian grain. North Korean ships hide their locations to export coal, and import oil in violation of UN sanctions. Ships may use fake locations to buy Iranian oil in violation of US sanctions. It's the same case with Venezuela. Meanwhile, many ships transmitting false locations are registered in Cyprus, to enjoy European financial services and legal safeguards, according to the New York Times.
A bigger emerging threat, especially in tense times like now, is the targeting of naval warships using this technology.
News reports suggest that locations of over 100 warships have been faked since August 2020. False data showed these warships entering disputed waters, or sailing near other countries' naval bases. The fake location data came from shore-based AIS receivers, while satellite data showed the real positions of these warships.
Most of the targeted warships were from NATO, and European fleets. Much of the false data showed the warships near Russian territories. This has sparked suspicion that Russia's prolific hackers may be behind the transmission of fake locations. It could be Moscow's plan to portray Western powers as aggressors.
If the spread of this technology is not stemmed, another big threat may be staring at the world.
Experts feel that this fake location tech is likely to spread to planes soon. Planes use satellite transponders similar to ships. Airplanes transmitting fake locations can be big danger, as they can be used for deadly terror attacks. It would also give a fillip to smuggling, and illegal border crossing.
The onus to take action lies on the United Nations. The UN needs to adopt and enforce stricter rules. Better security protocols for AIS transponder software are needed, apart from improved scrutiny of transponder manufacturers, and officials. A regular detailed analysis of satellite data can help spot defaulters. Finally, strict sanctions need to be imposed on ships and companies found faking locations.
Meanwhile, the Quadrilateral alliance, which includes India, USA, Japan, and Australia, seems to already be on the right track to curb this fake location racket.
The Quad is implementing a satellite surveillance system in the Indo-Pacific. It will monitor radio frequencies, and radar signals to track ships. This would help track ships which even have their AIS transponders switched off, thus sidestepping the fake location tactic. Satellite technology will be used to link surveillance centres in multiple nations in the region. The move is aimed at curbing weapons trafficking, and illegal fishing, mainly by China.
Over 70% of the Earth's surface is covered with water. Maritime trade and travel have been common for thousands of years. With modern technology making ships bigger and safer, we now have 70% of global trade by value being carried by sea. If authorities across the world fail to curb fake location technologies, waters of the world might just turn into the wild, wild west.

Video carried on state TV showed the moment the tank exploded, sending dock workers scrambling to escape the toxic cloud.
The Public Security Directorate, which initially described it as a gas leak, said authorities sealed off the area after evacuating the injured and sent specialists in to address the situation.
State-run Jordan TV said 13 people were killed. Al-Mamlaka TV, another official outlet, said 199 were still being treated in hospitals. The Public Security Directorate said a total of 251 people were injured.
Health officials urged people to stay inside and close windows and doors.
The nearest residential area is 25 kilometers (15 miles) away.
Aqaba is on the northern tip of the Red Sea, next to the Israeli city of Eilat, which is just across the border.
Both are popular beach and diving destinations.

Now, China seems to be trying to introduce similar technology at sea. A special Chinese ship called 'Zhu Hai Yun' was launched on May 18. It can be reportedly by controlled remotely and is capable of navigating autonomously.

The ship can carry multiple drones, submersibles, and other vessels. Its tasks include marine environment monitoring, and disaster management. The vessel was constructed by Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard in Guangzhou, and it might be delivered for deployment by end of 2022.
This is seen as a precursor to an automated warship, currently being developed by the Chinese Navy. The PLA Navy is reportedly working on a drone ship called JARI. The 'mini-destroyer' is designed to carry multiple weapons. It is likely to be armed with surface-to-air missiles, and also lightweight torpedo tubes.
It is likely to be equipped with phased-array radar, electro-optical devices, and sonar. The ship has been built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation. A prototype was launched in 2019, and sea trials began in 2020.
AI-powered ships are also making their way to the commercial world. An autonomous ship recently completed a voyage across the Pacific Ocean.
The ship named 'Prism Courage' was built by Hyundai. It is an ultra-large liquid natural gas tanker operated by SK Shipping. The automated features include monitoring of weather, wave height, and nearby shipping traffic.
Prism Courage travelled from the Gulf of Mexico to the Boryeong LNG Terminal in South Korea via the Panama Canal. Around half of the 20,000 km journey was done with the autonomous system active. It needed human monitoring, but no intervention during journey, as per reports.
India's biggest adversary China is currently focused on establishing itself as the lynchpin of global trade through the Belt and Road Initiative. Beijing is also trying to expand its military footprint in the Indo-Pacific. In both these arenas, autonomous ships might prove to be a gamechanger.

With India trying to follow an 'aatmanirbhar' path, the indigenous development of an autonomous vessel might be the need of the hour to counter China's aggressive ambitions.

Soldiers marching, driving tanks, flying fighter jets, and operating warships - with large-scale conflict being introduced to the 21st century by Russia and Ukraine, these are the weapons usually imagined as tools of war.
But with the technological revolution marching on, artificial intelligence is gradually reaching the battlefield. A few days ago, we told you about the KARGU drone - a Turkish invention powered by AI, which can target and attack enemies without specific orders by human controllers.
Now, China seems to be trying to introduce similar technology at sea. A special Chinese ship called 'Zhu Hai Yun' was launched on May 18. It can be reportedly by controlled remotely and is capable of navigating autonomously.

The ship can carry multiple drones, submersibles, and other vessels. Its tasks include marine environment monitoring, and disaster management. The vessel was constructed by Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard in Guangzhou, and it might be delivered for deployment by end of 2022.
This is seen as a precursor to an automated warship, currently being developed by the Chinese Navy. The PLA Navy is reportedly working on a drone ship called JARI. The 'mini-destroyer' is designed to carry multiple weapons. It is likely to be armed with surface-to-air missiles, and also lightweight torpedo tubes.
It is likely to be equipped with phased-array radar, electro-optical devices, and sonar. The ship has been built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation. A prototype was launched in 2019, and sea trials began in 2020.
AI-powered ships are also making their way to the commercial world. An autonomous ship recently completed a voyage across the Pacific Ocean.
The ship named 'Prism Courage' was built by Hyundai. It is an ultra-large liquid natural gas tanker operated by SK Shipping. The automated features include monitoring of weather, wave height, and nearby shipping traffic.
Prism Courage travelled from the Gulf of Mexico to the Boryeong LNG Terminal in South Korea via the Panama Canal. Around half of the 20,000 km journey was done with the autonomous system active. It needed human monitoring, but no intervention during journey, as per reports.
India's biggest adversary China is currently focused on establishing itself as the lynchpin of global trade through the Belt and Road Initiative. Beijing is also trying to expand its military footprint in the Indo-Pacific. In both these arenas, autonomous ships might prove to be a gamechanger.
With India also trying to follow an 'aatmanirbhar' or self-reliant path, the indigenous development of an autonomous vessel might be the need of the hour.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday launched two indigenously built warships 'Surat' and 'Udaygiri' at the Mazagon Docks in Mumbai.
This is the first time that the two indigenously built warships have been launched concurrently, the Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) said.
The MDL is a premier ship and submarine building defence public sector undertaking.
'Surat' is the fourth ship of Project 15B Destroyers, which heralds a significant makeover of the P15A (Kolkata Class) destroyers, and is named after the commercial capital of Gujarat and also the second largest commercial hub of western India after Mumbai, the Navy said.
The Project 15B class of ships are the Navy's next generation stealth guided missile destroyers being built at the MDL.
'Udaygiri', named after a mountain range in Andhra Pradesh, is the third ship of Project 17A Frigates. It is a follow on of the P17 Frigates (Shivalik Class) with improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors and platform management systems, the Navy said.
The new warship is the reincarnation of the erstwhile 'Udaygiri', the Leander Class ASW Frigate, which saw numerous challenging operations in its illustrious service to the country, spanning over three decades from February 1976 to August 2007, it added.
