A young girl from Shimla allegedly committed suicide over her Class 12 board exam results. Authorities are investigating.

A girl allegedly committed suicide by jumping off a bridge near Shimla in Himachal Pradesh after failing in the class 12 board exams, police said here Tuesday.
According to the police, the girl, who lived with her parents in a rented room in Shimla, was distressed after she failed in the Class 12 board exams for the second time.
The results of the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education were declared on Saturday.
A day after the results were declared, the girl went to Badagaon and jumped off the bridge located on Mehli-Shoghi bypass road in Shimla. Some locals informed the police after noticing the girl jumping off the bridge, they said.
The police team then took out the body from the nallah with the help of the locals. The body was then taken to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla and later handed over to the family after post-mortem.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.

Heavy bookings have been received for the Christmas season, with 25 to 30 per cent advance reservations for New Year.

Northern Railways on Friday commenced New Year and winter season special trains on the UNESCO world heritage Shimla-Kalka narrow gauge railway line, an official said.
The trains will operate until February 28, 2025 for tourist visiting Shimla during the holiday season, Station Superintendent Shimla Railway Station Sanjay Ghera.
He said that 81 passengers boarded the train on the very first day.
According to the schedule, train number 52443 (KLK-SML) will depart from Kalka at 8:05 am and will reach Shimla at 1:35 pm. Similarly, another train number 52444, will depart from Shimla at 4:50 pm and will reach Kalka at 9:45 pm.
These special holiday trains would not only be instrumental in promoting tourism but will also generate revenue for the railways, Ghera said and added that the train can accommodate about 156 passengers.
The trains will stop at Dharampur, Barog, Solan, Kandaghat and Summerhill railway stations. There are a total of seven coaches including three general coaches and two each of chair car and first class.
An official of Northern Railways, Ambala Division said the decision to run two holiday trains was prompted by the surge in tourist inflow to Shimla during Christmas and New Year.

The Britishers laid the first rail link to connect Shimla in 1903. In 2009, the Kalka-Shimla rail track was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
There are 103 tunnels on the 96.6 kilometres long narrow gauge railway track, besides 800 bridges, 919 curves and 18 railway stations. Shimla-Kalka became the first narrow gauge track in the country to run Vistadome coach on December 11, 2018.

The summer peak tourist season in Shimla usually lasts from April 15 to June 15.

A 5-10-minute halt at entry points has emerged as a strategy to ensure smooth vehicular movement in the Himachal Pradesh capital reeling from acute traffic congestion during the peak tourist season.
With the advent of summer signalling the peak tourist season in the 'Queen of the Hills', the police have formulated a new strategy to ensure hassle free traffic movement in the city.
The summer peak tourist season in Shimla usually lasts from April 15 to June 15.
As part of a trial run, the police are stopping vehicles at the entry points -- Shoghi for those coming from Chandigarh, Chhabra for those entering from upper Shimla/Kinnaur and Heeranagar for those arriving from Mandi, Kangra and Hamirpur districts -- to ensure smooth traffic flow in the city, Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said.
According to police data, about 60,000 vehicles remain parked on the roadsides in the city. On an average, about 12,000 vehicles enter Shimla on weekdays, with the number rising to over 26,000 during the weekends at the height of the tourist season.
"The flow of traffic goes beyond control at 16 bottlenecks and we are preparing a proposal to set up traffic lights at the three entry points -- Shoghi, Chhabra and Heeranagar -- that will be activated during rush hours," Gandhi told PTI.
Halting the onrushing traffic at the entry points is the need of the hour for smooth vehicular movement on Cart Road (Circular Road) -- the lifeline of Shimla -- and to provide uninterrupted access to Victory Tunnel-Sanjauli Road for patients going to the Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital, he added.
An analysis of traffic flow revealed that over 50 vehicles pass through the Victory Tunnel in the heart of the city from the three sides every minute. While about 20 vehicles can cross the tunnel at once, the remaining vehicles lead to traffic congestion.
The continuous release of over 10 vehicles per minute will ensure smooth traffic in the city and, therefore, the halt at the entry points is an experiment, Gandhi said.
The holding distance is 100 metres in Chhabra, 150 metres in Heeranagar and 400 metres in Shoghi.
CCTV cameras have been installed at the 16 major road stretches/points and bifurcations, including Sanjauli, Dhalli, Lift-Victory Tunnel stretch, Victory Tunnel-Lakkar Bazaar stretch, the railway station, New Shimla, Chotta Shimla and the ISBT Crossing, the police said.
The experiment, however, has evoked mixed responses from commuters.
"Vehicles arriving from Solan were stopped for 20 minutes on Friday. As a result, I was late for office," said Manish, a regular commuter from Solan.
Earlier, the traffic jam would start from the 103 Tunnel. Now, vehicles are stopped at Tara Devi, he said and added that the earlier arrangement was better.
On the other hand, Rajiv, a local resident, said the city was built for a population of 15,000. It is now home to over three lakh people and vehicles have also increased manifold.
Traffic congestion has become a major issue and one month's inconvenience is bearable provided there is a permanent solution to the problem, he said.
A bus driver said, "It used to take me an hour to one-and-a-half hours to reach the bus stand from the suburbs last May. That time has come down to 30 minutes." According to the Shimla City Traffic Regulation and Management Plan prepared by the police in February 2021, acute shortage of parking in schools, colleges, hospitals, government and private offices and shopping areas located along the roads, coupled with haphazard parking on narrow roads, was mainly responsible for congestion.
The then-Superintendent of Police Mohit Chawla had pointed out that 1.20 lakh vehicles were registered in the city, which has a parking capacity for 2,500-5,000.
The problem assumed alarming proportions during the tourist rush with 1.43 lakh vehicles crossing the Shoghi barrier from December 24, 2020, to January 3, 2021, alone.&nbsp;

State party president Pratibha Singh is considered a key frontrunner for the chief minister's post, closely followed by former party chief Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and outgoing CLP leader Mukesh Agnihotri.

The Congress, which wrested power from the BJP in Himachal Pradesh, has convened a meeting of all its newly-elected MLAs in Shimla on Friday and the meet is likely to pass a resolution authorising the Congress president to pick the CLP leader.
The Congress on Thursday won 40 seats in the 68-member Assembly in the hill state which maintained its tradition of not voting any incumbent government to power since 1985.
Leader of the opposition Mukesh Agnihotri said that a meeting would be held in Shimla on Friday.
Deciding on the chief ministerial face who can bind the party going forward is the immediate challenge for the Congress.

AICC in-charge of Himachal Pradesh Rajeev Shukla had on Thursday said the Congress was happy that it is getting an opportunity to form the government in the state and asserted that the party will do everything to fulfil the 10 guarantees made to the people of the state and would provide better governance to people.
"The newly-elected Congress MLAs would meet in Shimla on Friday post-election results and decide on electing the new legislature party leader," Shukla had told PTI on Thursday.
Sources said the MLAs are likely to pass a one-line resolution authorising Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to decide the CLP leader. This has been the tradition in the Congress party, they said.
The party's two observers -- Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and senior leader from Haryana Bhupinder Singh Hooda-- along with Shukla are arriving in the state capital where all the party MLAs have been called.
While Shukla is AICC in charge of Himachal Pradesh, Baghel was appointed senior observer for the polls.

According to officials there was no loss of life due to timely evacuation. 
As per media reports, some men sitting in the bar noticed sudden cracks in the windows and ran out of the building while alerting others. 
The weather officer has predicted  widespread moderate to heavy rainfall in Sirmaur, Solan, Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Hamirpur, Kangra, Bilaspur districts and adjoining areas including Shimla town for Saturday and Sunday. 
There is a high probability of one or two spells of very heavy rainfall in parts of these districts during this period, it added.
The department warned that downpours may cause traffic disruptions, landslides, increased runoff in nullahs, rivers and other channels leading to flash floods and poor visibility conditions.
It is advised to take adequate safety measures to avoid any untoward incident, the MeT office suggested.
Light to moderate rainfall is also expected in high hills including parts of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur districts, it added.
