Born with Phocomelia, a rare condition that resulted in underdeveloped limbs, Sheetal Devi&rsquo;s journey is nothing short of miraculous. As the world&rsquo;s only para-archer without upper limbs, her accomplishments are a testament to human resilience.

Under the guidance of former archer and coach Kuldeep Vedwan, who was moved by her ability to climb trees using only her legs, she honed her skills. Despite setbacks, including a failed attempt to use a prosthetic arm, Sheetal&rsquo;s spirit remained unbroken.
In 2022, with financial support from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Sheetal began training for para-sports, competing in national-level championships. Though she didn&rsquo;t win a medal at her first major event, the Junior National Championships, her unorthodox archery technique left a lasting impression.
Her breakthrough came at the 2023 Hangzhou Para-Asian Games, where she made history by winning three medals&mdash;two gold medals in the Individual Compound and Mixed Team Compound events, and a silver in the Doubles Compound event.
Her triumphs were celebrated across the nation, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself acknowledging her grit and determination on social media.
In 2023, Sheetal Devi&rsquo;s remarkable achievements were further recognized with the prestigious Arjuna Award and the title of Best Youth Athlete of the Year by the Asian Paralympic Committee.

Para Asian Games gold medallist Sheetal Devi was felicitated for her stellar show in archery last year.&nbsp;

The Durbar Hall reverberated with the claps of the dignitaries when para archer Sheetal Devi, winner of three gold medals at the Para Asian Games in Hangzhou, walked up to collect her Arjuna on January 09.
The 16-year-old is the only international para-archery champion without upper limbs due to a rare medical condition called Phocomelia. President Droupadi Murmu held Sheetal's award and the scroll as the teenager soaked in the atmosphere and the splendour of the hall. Devi's three medals at Asiad include a gold in Individual Compound and Mixed Compound and a silver in Doubles Compound.&nbsp;
Shuttlers Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy were chosen for the coveted Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award for a breakout 2023, during which they won their maiden Asian Games gold, while also clinching the Asian Championships title and the Indonesia Open Super 1000 title.
The duo is currently playing in Malaysia Open Super 1000 and therefore skipped the function.
Also receiving a huge round of applause was the newly-crowned chess Grandmaster R. Vaishali, the elder sister of precocious chess talent R. Praggnanandhaa.
Vaishali was honoured for becoming the third woman from the country after Koneru Humpy and Dronavalli Harika to turn GM.
