Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das highlighted some concerns related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a recent speech in Bengaluru. At the Inaugural Address at Global Conference on DPI and Emerging Technologies, RBI Governor said, 'Such advancements, however, come with serious challenges. Data privacy concerns arise from handling vast volumes of personal information. Ethical AI governance is essential to ensure fairness and prevention of bias'.
Das said, 'Financial institutions must ensure that AI models are explainable, i.e., ability to explain why certain results are produced. AI technology can also be misused to spread misinformation, potentially causing severe damage and disruption to DPIs as well as other digital systems'.
He said, 'they can also damage the reputation and operations of financial institutions'.

&ldquo;The RBI governor has cemented critical reforms, overseen world-leading payments innovation and steered India through difficult times with a steady hand and well-crafted turn of phrase," the organisers said in a statement. Das was recommended for the award in March 2023. The award recognises his role as the RBI chief in managing inflation and skilfully handling India's banking system during crises like COVID pandemic and global turmoils.
Shaktikanta Das took over as RBI governor in December 2018. Under his leadership, RBI was instrumental in implementing crucial reforms, innovative payment systems, and growth-oriented measures during the pandemic.
Das is the second Central Bank governor to be honoured with the award. Prior to this, Raghuram Rajan bagged the title in 2015.&nbsp;

Days after the RBI monetary policy committee's decision to pause the repo rate hike for a second time, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das explained the rationale of the pause. The governor said the disinflation process in India will be slow and protracted, with the 4 per cent inflation target likely to be met only over the medium term.
"The cumulative impact of our monetary policy actions over the last one year is still unfolding and yet to materialise fully," Das said in a speech at the Summer Meetings organised by Central Banking in London. "While our inflation projection for the current financial year 2023-24 is lower, at 5.1 per cent, it would still be well above the target," he added.&nbsp; In the recent monetary policy committee, RBI left its key interest rate unchanged for a second straight policy meeting but signalled that it wants to see inflation moderate more while keeping an eye on the monsoon.
Barring the recent pause, the RBI has raised the repo rate by 250 basis points cumulatively since May 2022 in the fight against inflation. Latest data showed India's annual retail inflation cooled to a 25-month low at 4.25 per cent in May from 4.7 per cent in April, but analysts expect prices to remain sticky in the coming months.

For his steady leadership during challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the inflationary impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Reserve Bank of India Governor, Shatikanta Das has been named 'Governor of the Year' by Central Banking.&nbsp; Central Banking Publications is a financial publisher specialising in public policy and financial markets, with an emphasis on central banks, and international financial institutions.
Das was commended for steering the central bank deftly between intense political pressures and economic disaster. He insisted that 'sunset clauses' be applied to most of the RBI's COVID-19 interventions and provided targeted liquidity to key sectors, foreign exchange, and more generous terms to state governments on their overdraft facilities.
Under Das's leadership, the RBI implemented critical reforms, introduced innovative payment systems, and provided growth-supportive measures during the pandemic.&nbsp; Back in 2015, RBI former governor Raghuram Rajan was also conferred the same title.&nbsp;

In a first, Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das&nbsp;flagged the rising data breaches and cyber attacks as a risk facing the economy.Das wrote in his foreword to the bi-annual Financial Stability Report prepared by the RBI&nbsp;that&nbsp;new risks have emerged on the horizon and these include the still nascent and mending state of the upturn, international commodity prices and inflationary pressures, global spillovers amid high uncertainty, and rising incidence of data breaches and cyber attacks.In March this year the government told the Parliament that there were nearly 1.16 million cyberattacks&nbsp;in 2020, up nearly three times from 2019 and more than 20 times compared to 2016.&nbsp;Das&nbsp;wrote that the second wave of the&nbsp;pandemic&nbsp;took a &ldquo;grievous toll&rdquo; on India, but the dented economic activity has started recovering from late-May.

Das&nbsp;wrote that the second wave of the&nbsp;pandemic&nbsp;took a &ldquo;grievous toll&rdquo; on India, but the dented economic activity has started recovering from late-May.

In a first, Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das&nbsp;flagged the rising data breaches and cyber attacks as a risk facing the economy. Das wrote in his foreword to the bi-annual Financial Stability Report prepared by the RBI&nbsp;that&nbsp;new risks have emerged on the horizon and these include the still nascent and mending state of the upturn, international commodity prices and inflationary pressures, global spillovers amid high uncertainty, and rising incidence of data breaches and cyber attacks. In March this year the government told the Parliament that there were nearly 1.16 million cyberattacks&nbsp;in 2020, up nearly three times from 2019 and more than 20 times compared to 2016.&nbsp; Das&nbsp;wrote that the second wave of the&nbsp;pandemic&nbsp;took a &ldquo;grievous toll&rdquo; on India, but the dented economic activity has started recovering from late-May.

RBI's new home loan rules to boost real estate

The RBI on Friday&nbsp;changed rules for new home loans to boost the real estate sector.
Under the current regulations, differential risk weights are applicable to individual home loans. If risk weights rise, a bank has to make more provisions and thus the banks&rsquo; ability to lend gets restricted.
"In recognition of the role of the real estate sector in generating employment and economic activity, it has been decided to rationalise the risk weights and link them to LTV ratios only for all new housing loans sanctioned up to March 31, 2022," the RBI chief Shaktikanta Das said.
This move will likely make more credit available to borrowers, particularly for the higher value loans.
