According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, PCB selection committee wanted Shaheen Afridi to be named as Pakistan's vice-captain ahead of naming their squad for T20 World Cup 2024 but the pacer rejected it.
The report stated that as a result, the Pakistan World Cup squad, which was named hours before the ICC deadline to submit the final squad, did not officially have a vice-captain.
Shaheen was made Pakistan's skipper after the national side's below-par show at the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup. However, the 24-year-old was stripped of the captaincy duties after losing just 1 series against New Zealand. It is understood that the pacer doesn't want to take up a leadership role anymore since Shaheen feels that he was unceremoniously dumped.
While Shaheen was their first choice, the PCB selection committee also discussed other alternatives. Shadab Khan - who has served as vice-captain before - was one of the leading contenders, though his struggles with the ball and Pakistan's tendency not to use him with the bat in the top order means his place in the XI is not necessarily guaranteed.
The possibility of nominating Mohammad Rizwan as Babar's deputy was also raised, though ultimately rejected, with the committee wishing to appoint a younger player in the position.

The issue surrounding the Pakistani cricket team's captaincy has taken a severe turn for the worse. According to a report from EspnCricinfo, Shaheen Afridi is furious that the PCB used a phoney statement in support of Babar Azam which he actually never made.
It is reported that the PCB did not request a statement from Afridi to be used in a press release. But shortly after Babar Azam was named captain again, PCB issued a statement in the name of Shaheen in which he promised to back Babar Azam wholeheartedly. Afridi is extremely dissatisfied with the way he has been handled throughout the entire captaincy U-turn.&nbsp;
"I will always cherish the memories and the opportunity," a statement, attributed to Afridi, said. "As a team player, it is my duty to back our captain, Babar Azam. I have played under his captaincy and have nothing but respect for him. I will try to help him on and off the field. We are all one. Our aim is the same, to help Pakistan become the best team in the world."
However, Afridi never provided any such statement.
Afridi was about to make a statement since he was so angry with PCB, according to EspnCricinfo, but instead, the PCB called him in for urgent talks.
Additional talks are scheduled with Shaheen Afridi, underscoring the PCB's desperate attempt to calm Afridi's ire and stop things from getting worse.

He jumped seven places to displace Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood from the top in the latest ICC rankings.
Afridi's rise to the top comes a day after his team's victory over Bangladesh in the World Cup in which he captured three wickets for 23 runs.
The match also saw him reach his 100th ODI wicket, which came in his 51st game, making him the third fastest to achieve the landmark in the format to date, besides being the fastest pacer to do so.

Star left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi has signed a three-year contract with Desert Vipers for the second season of the UAE's ILT20, and will become the first Pakistan player to play in the league in January next year.
"I am excited to join the Desert Vipers. I know there are many Pakistan cricket fans in the UAE and I hope they will support our team in the upcoming ILT20," Afridi said in a statement.
The next season of ILT20 is scheduled to begin on January 13, and Afridi could join the team after returning from Australia.
The Vipers had tried to sign a few players from Pakistan last year as well but those attempts didn't materialise.
Last year, Vipers had signed Azam Khan, which would have made him the first Pakistan player in the ILT20, but the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) did not grant him the no-objection certificate to play in the league.
The PCB's current chairman Zaka Ashraf has, however, is allowing players to participate in various T20 leagues.
"Shaheen is undeniably a player of world-class calibre who has had a significant impact not only for Pakistan but for every team he's played for in recent times," Vipers director of cricket Tom Moody said on their new signing.
"He offers a huge amount as an impact pace bowler that has destroyed many, many top-orders and he also boasts terrific leadership skills that will add a huge amount of value to the Desert Vipers moving forward." Afridi will join a bowling attack that has Wanindu Hasaranga, Matheesha Pathirana, Tom Curran and Sheldon Cottrell among others.&nbsp;
