The Serum Institute of India (SII) has offered two crore doses of Covishield vaccine to the central government free of cost amid a rise in COVID-19 cases in some countries, official sources said on Wednesday.
According to an official source, Prakash Kumar Singh, Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs at the Serum Institute, has written to the Health Ministry offering the doses worth Rs 410 crore free of cost.
It is learnt that Singh has sought to know from the ministry how the delivery can be made.
SII has so far provided more than 170 crore doses of Covishield to the government for the national immunisation programme.

Amid a spike in COVID-19 cases in some countries, including China and South Korea, the government has sounded an alert and asked states and Union territories to prepare for any eventuality.
India has stepped its surveillance and genome sequencing of Covid positive samples.
With only 27 per cent of the eligible adult population having taken the precaution dose, government officials have appealed to those due for it to take it.
Official sources on Wednesday cautioned that the next 40 days will be crucial as India may see a Covid surge in January.

The Serum Institute of India (SII) has sought the drug regulator's approval for market authorisation of its Covid-19 vaccine Covovax as a booster dose for those aged 18 years and above who have been administered two doses of Covishield or Covaxin, official sources said on Thursday.
Prakash Kumar Singh, director, government and regulatory affairs, SII, submitted a market authorisation application for the heterologous booster dose of Covovax to the drugs controller general of India (DCGI) on October 17.
It has been learnt that the DCGI's office had raised a few queries, after which Singh submitted a reply, mentioning about the current emerging situation caused by a new coronavirus variant.

Covovax was approved by the DCGI for a restricted emergency use in children aged seven to 11 years in June.
The DCGI had approved Covovax for a restricted use in emergency situations in adults on December 28, 2021 and for those in the 12-17 age group, subject to certain conditions, on March 9.
Covovax is manufactured through technology transfer from Novavax. It has been approved by the European Medicines Agency for conditional marketing authorisation.
It was granted emergency-use listing by the World Health Organization (WHO) on December 2017, 2020. In August 2020, US-based vaccine maker Novavax Inc. had announced a licence agreement with the SII for the development and commercialisation of NVX-CoV2373, its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, in India and low-and-middle-income countries

Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) has been duped of Rs 1 crore by fraudsters who allegedly posed as the company&rsquo;s chief executive officer (CEO) Adar Poonawalla and sent a WhatsApp message to one of its directors seeking money transfer to various accounts, said the police.
The fraud unfolded between Wednesday and Thursday, said an official of Bundgarden police station.
A First Information Report (FIR) for cheating and offences under the Information Technology Act has been registered against unidentified persons, said senior inspector Pratap Mankar.
Satish Deshpande, one of the directors of the SII, received WhatsApp messages from a person who posed as Adar Poonawalla, as per the FIR.
The sender asked Deshpande to transfer money to certain bank accounts immediately, said the complaint filed by the finance manager of the firm.

Believing that it was the CEO who had messaged, company officials transferred Rs 1,01,01,554 online, only to realize later that Poonawalla had never sent any such WhatsApp communication.
Investigation was going on, said inspector Mankar.
The SII, which has a plant near Pune, produces the Covishield vaccine against coronavirus among other vaccines.

In case of a collaboration it could take two to three months to import the vaccine into the country, Poonawalla said in an interview to news channel NDTV.
With only a handful cases of monkeypox in the country at the moment, he said for initiating local development of the vaccine SII would have to wait and watch for a few months to assess the real demand scenario.
India has reported four cases monkeypox, including three in Kerala, so far.
"I am ready to do that immediately as a security to our nation. As soon as we can have some sort of commercial tie up to import it and based on availability from Bavarian Nordic, we are hoping to do so," Poonawalla said when asked how soon SII could import the monkeypox vaccine into the country.
Danish firm Bavarian Nordic has already developed a vaccine against monkeypox and is available in different markets under brand names Jynneos, Imvamune or Imvanex.
Poonawalla further said: "My team is talking to them right now. For larger volumes we take a call based on true demand and necessity." SII is ready to import some batches on its own cost initially, he said but added the government would have to decide how to go about for larger volumes.
"There are a handful of cases and so there is no need for knee jerk reaction and order million of dosages and do all of that..we need to watch closely over the next few months...have collaborated very well with the government earlier and we need to have that close coordination even now," he added.
Poonawalla noted that even if they started the process now for manufacturing the vaccine locally, it would probably take a year before they come out with a market ready product.
"To make it from scratch is difficult as it would take time and investment.. not sure if we will be able to do it..it would have to be with someone else..," Poonawalla said.
"As a manufacturer, we really need to see if there is a demand or in 4-5 months it is going to fizzle out and treatments that are there are going to take care of the disease like this so we will have to wait and watch," he added.
On the other hand, the company can bring in bulk supplies of the vaccine which would be adequate for monkeypox as it is not going to be a global pandemic, he noted.
"You don't need to vaccinate the entire population..in certain regions where spread is there you would like to vaccinate over there..and we are talking about importing some vaccine doses as finished product just over the next few months as abundant precaution if the country needs it..," Poonawalla said.
He said there was no need to panic due to the detection of a few cases as the disease has been there for decades.

World Health Organization has issued an emergency use listing for Covovax, a Covid-19 vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India. 
The vaccine is produced under licence from Novavax and is part of the COVAX facility portfolio, giving a much-needed boost to ongoing efforts to vaccinate more people in lower-income countries.
A statement by WHO said that it assessed Covovax based on the review of data on quality, safety and efficacy, a risk management plan, programmatic suitability, and manufacturing site inspections carried out by the Drugs Controller General of India.
The statement also said that the vaccine meets WHO standards for protection against Covid-19, its benefit far outweighs any risks, and that the vaccine can be used globally.

According to a report by India Today, the SEC has questioned administration of a third dose when several nations are facing a threat by Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus. 
The committee has asked SII to submit data pertaining to local clinical trials for booster doses. 
The India Today report state that the committee observed that SII has only presented immunogenicity data of 75 subjects from the UK study and no data has been submitted on need for booster doses in Indian population.

5 charred bodies have been recovered after a major fire broke out at the Serum Institute of India in an under-construction building. It took close to 2 hours and 10 fire tenders for the firemen to control the blaze. The fire began on the third floor of the under-construction building where electrical work was going on and then spread to the fourth and fifth floors, according to reports.&nbsp;
Serum Institute CEO&nbsp;Adar Poonwalla&nbsp;tweeted that he is&nbsp;saddened by the loss of lives and offered his&nbsp;condolences to the family members of the deceased.&nbsp;
Poonawalla has&nbsp;assured the country that production of its Covid-19 vaccine will not be affected by the fire.&nbsp;The building where the fire broke out is located at a distance from the Covid-19 vaccine manufacturing unit and has cause no damage to the vaccines or its production.&nbsp;

Drugs Controller General of India on Tuesday gave permission to Serum Institute of India to resume clinical trial of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine candidate. The DCGI, Dr V G Somani, has however, put certain conditions like taking extra care during screening, providing additional information in informed consent to be followed during the trials. The DCGI had on September 11 directed Serum Institute of India to suspend any new recruitment in the phase two and three clinical trial of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine in the backdrop of pharma giant AstraZeneca pausing the clinical trials in other countries because of "an unexplained illness" in a volunteer.

New Delhi, PTI: Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) Dr V G Somani on Tuesday gave permission to Serum Institute of India to resume clinical trial of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine candidate in the country while revoking its earlier order of suspending any new recruitment for phase two and three trial.
The DCGI, however, put certain conditions like taking extra care during screening, providing additional information in informed consent and close monitoring for adverse events during follow-up of the study which have to be "scrupulously" followed by Serum Institute of India (SII).
SII has also been asked to submit to the DCGI's office details of medication used in accordance with the protocol for management of adverse events.
The DCGI had on September 11 directed Serum Institute of India to suspend any new recruitment in the phase two and three clinical trial of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine candidate till further orders in the backdrop of pharma giant AstraZeneca pausing the clinical trials in other countries because of ''an unexplained illness'' in a participant in the study.
On Saturday, British-Swedish biopharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford said clinical trials for their coronavirus vaccine have resumed in the UK after the Medicines Health Regulatory Authority's (MHRA) confirmed that the trials were safe.
SII, which has partnered with AstraZeneca for manufacturing the vaccine candidate for Covid-19, on Tuesday submitted the recommendations of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB), UK and DSMB, India, and requested for permission to restart enrolment in the clinical trial.
According to Tuesday's order issued by DCGI, the DSMB, UK, recommended that the investigators recommence all immunization in their clinical trials subject to certain conditions.
DSMB, India, also has recommended to continue the study and enroll the remaining participants in the clinical trial as per protocol subject to certain conditions.
According to the order, SII has submitted revised participant information sheet, revised informed consent form and additional safety monitoring plan for the evolved participants.

Stating that nothing untoward has been reported during vaccine candidate trials in India, the&nbsp;Serum Institute CEO Adar Poonawalla&nbsp;has said that halting of trial in the United Kingdom will have no impact on the production in India.&nbsp;The&nbsp;Serum Institute of India&nbsp;is conducting trials on the Oxford vaccine also known as COVISHIELD&nbsp;in India.&nbsp;Poonawalla told the India Today that the&nbsp;reaction that has been reported is not directly linked to the vaccine&nbsp;and the&nbsp;person who has had the reaction had an existing neurological condition.&nbsp;He said during a vaccine trial such events are common place.&nbsp;The CEO emphasized that his company&rsquo;s&nbsp;production timelines are on schedule as planned.&nbsp;
